Let's face it, pretty much all mainstream films all trickle their way to one or two caricatured or stereotyped characters with accentuated traits playing out formulaic plots. I guess that is the nature of the industry. However, what would you say is the most realistic film you've ever seen ? From England mine would be 'I Swear' and from overseas 'Amores Perros' the Mexican trilogy about dog-fighting, the rich couple and the homeless man.

Minder with Tery McCann, Arthur Daley and Dave the barman at the Winchester.
Was a kid at the time but definitely could see some of the blokes that hung around with my dad in the 70s and 80s be they neighbours, colleagues, friends or even bar stewards defintiely a few had traits of a few of the characters in this tv series
Probably looking back with rose tinted glasses, but life seemed more straightforward then and less complicated. No internet, no social media, no mobile phones and the next big sociery drainer, no AI. And no opportunities to identify as whatever the heck you choose to be.
Terry was a total lad, Arthur was always trying to make a fast buck unsuccessfully and Dave provided the archetypal barman to try out your BS on. Such as it was !!!

For 'real life' films, it would be hard to find a better director than Ken Loach. 'I, Daniel Blake' is a recent-ish one that comes to mind and we could go all the way back to the late 60s classic 'Kes' for another. I think the excellent 'I Swear' owes much to Loach's work.

Shane Meadows has a knack for getting incredibly naturalistic performances out of his actors. Often works with the same actors.
This Is England, Dead Man's Shoes.
The Virtues TV series was powerful stuff, with one of the most realistic depictions of an after hours lock-in I've seen on screen, and I also really liked The Gallows Pole, about the coiners in west Yorkshire.

I was going to post the same thing Cliveā¦ filmed in a 1917 style ie one continuous scene from start to finish ā¦ incredibly gritty and immersive production. Best thing Iāve seen on tv for years

Although I canāt claim to have any first hand experience of the borstal system (thankfully) Scum, starring Ray Winstone, struck me as a pretty realistic, if rather brutal and depressing, depiction of life therein.
Nothing But A Man, Michael Roemerās 1964 independent film, tapped into the awakening of righteous anger in response to social and institutional racism in America. Singer Abbey Lincoln featured in it. The original soundtrack featured Stevie Wonder.
Iāll throw in a couple of TV series too, if I may: Boys From The Blackstuff and Fox, a sort of south London version of The Godfather.

Was an incredible bit of acting by the lad in the therapy scenes. Sometimes you wondet where some actors dredge up their inspirations from, but especially this guy who was only a young teen. Quite a performance.

I was going to say scum as well but thought Iād be shot down. Early 80ās I worked with a bloke whoād dad was an officer at Feltham (the old building) and they used the short sharp shock method, and I reckon scum was pretty spot on .
Very gritty portrayal of New York 70s drugs crime, and well-known that Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso (the 2 cops involved in the real life drugs bust) advised on set and acted in the film (Egan portraying Hackman/Doyle's boss Simonson).

Close-up by Abbas Kiarostami is one of the most unique films I've seen. The film tries to retell a true story of a con man impersonating a popular Iranian filmmaker. The film uses the actual people from the case as the actors recreating all the events including the trial.
