U2's The Joshua Tree has been named the best album of the 1980s.

Is it though?

I must admit, it shaped my 80's, such a new sound, bloody awesome to this day, although i was very influenced by The Cult - Love, Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair, Big Country - In a Big Country or i could really soy a lot more as i reminiss.

Into The Gap by The Thompson Twins or Kings Of The Wild Frontier by Adam & The Ants.

The grass is always greener.

Not for me. Might be for you though.

Fck knows what is. Ranking music seems a ridiculously futile and subjective endeavour.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

My cousin who is from Finchley and has been managing bands all his life. Landed over to my remote neck of the woods with his mum in 1981 as a 16 year old and told me that my fellow country men were going to be one of the biggest rock bands in the world. 40 years later, can't argue with his judgement. Still think 'War' superior to 'Joshua Tree'

Ride the Lightning-Metallica.

For me, some might say Master of Puppets but I prefer the rawness of 'ride'.

Beer and Beef has made us what we are - The Prince Regent

Yes it is. I love the Stone Roses album, it is flawless, but The Joshua Tree has depth to it which makes it stand out from the rest.

Stone Roses or Disintegration.

"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."

Easily their best album.

As for me,

Slayer - reign in blood
Stone roses
Sonic youth - daydream nation
Cure - disintegration

Ridiculous amount of competition though across a decade, even just on what used to be the mainstream level:

Appetite for Destruction
Graceland
Brothers in Arms
The Queen is Dead
Both Housemartins albums

not even the best U2 album of the 80's

I would have expected Thriller to be top, maybe it lost out for non musical reasons

Lexican of love a worthy top ten.

New order albums aren't that consistent. Good greatest hit band, but too many filler songs imo.

Definitely this.

What were the criteria? Who decided? Was it limited to GB and Ireland acts?

These things predictably usually come up with some variation of guitar based rock and nearly everyone (with a couple of exceptions) have gone the same way on this thread.

So for a contrary view I offer 1988’s ‘It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back’ — Public Enemy.
