HS2 is already being built, they even passed legislation in 2021 which basically covered the land sales for Phase 2 and the design. Utterly shocking decision.
| HS2 on 13:32 - Oct 4 with 6752 views | bosh67 | Sadly the government are wildly out of control. They've contributed massively to the carbon footprint and national debt without achieving anything. Well, 13 minutes off a train ride back and forth. | |

| HS2 on 14:01 - Oct 4 with 6647 views | Tonto | lets get one thing clear, HS2 is a badly thought out and run project. we need a high speed rail network but the route is rubbish (it should link up with HS1, it should go to the centre of Birmingham and Manchester and should also go up to Glasgow IMO, but I am but a humble transport planner who's professional opinions usually ignored by politics). the cost overruns are horrific because the original cost estimate was woefully inadequate. so its hard to defend something that's.. well a bit crap, but better than not having it (a bit like the EU). but having started it, the London to Birmingham section is, going to be pointless. so its better to complete the thing than leave it half done. | |

There was a decision point for the London to Birmingham leg after Covid had led to a change in working patterns, but they chose to press ahead anyway. That makes the decision today appear very hypocritical.

Quizzed by a BBC reporter about Sunak's landmark decision to scrap the northern leg of HS2, Birmingham pensioner Doreen Blanchflower commented: "I don't know what all the fuss is about. I've always dreamed of getting to Old Oak Common more quickly and now I can. Well done Rishi". * Some words and other details changed for dramatic purposes. Always read the label

| HS2 on 14:17 - Oct 4 with 6578 views | MedwayR | It was doomed to fail from day one. In my opinion it should've run via Luton airport with the funding for Heathrow going there instead, an opportunity to pump money into a deprived area with high speed rail into London and Birmingham makes sense to me. I would now say they should do the Liverpool-Manchester-Leeds section as a priority and join it up with Birmingham later, that would at least give the north a boost. | |

| HS2 on 14:46 - Oct 4 with 6505 views | derbyhoop | I recently went to Lille, via 2 x TGVs, a regional train and Paris metro. 4 trains in each direction, all ran on time. Travelled first class on TGVs for an extra 5€. Whole trip cost 160€. Now compare that to the train service in UK. It's an awful decision, despite the escalating costs. Most benefits arise when there is a London, not OOC, to Manchester line. Does anybody seriously expect that the monies will be diverted, in full, to improved E-W services? | |

You will notice that even though they say "circumstances have changed", these never change to considering a FULL renationalisation (for the second time), even just as an option, which they would then discard obviously. So, it's not even an option anywhere! Yet they keep claiming that private enterprise is more efficient than a nationalised service. But remember, anyone is better than Corbyn (make sure you roll your eyes when his name is mentioned). You know, May, Johnson, Truss, Sunak, Starmer. All better than Corbyn, we are told (remember to roll your eyes as if it's correct). Think how much worse it would have been with Corbyn (roll eyes); if you think of it that way, you can see how lucky we were with May, Johnson, Truss, Sunak and soon Starmer. How fortunate we are ... as anyone is better than ...

| HS2 on 15:17 - Oct 4 with 6333 views | NorthantsHoop | I worked for DfT for many years before early retirement, let's just say HS2 has been a problem child from the day that the government decided to set up HS2 Ltd to deliver the project. I would assume if a Labour government is elected next year the northern leg of HS2 will be back on the agenda again. This political decision by Sunak most likely is about setting traps for an incoming Labour government and anyway the re-development of Euston, alongside re-developing Birmingham centre within the project was always key to the actual aims of a new high speed railway, never felt there was much interest in going up to Leeds or Manchester as this all seemed a bit too hard, but as usual was played along with and has affected/blighted the future of people living in the affected areas sadly. Many of us early doors thought the project would not be able to be delivered for the original budget and within the timeframe. The suggestions by Andy Street and Andy Burnham to engage the private sector in a greater partnership with government and local authorities seem most sensible, be interesting to see how this plays out. I'd love to see Labour revive it after the GE, however there is now reports that the Tories are selling off land on the cheap, that was expensively CPO'd and planned for HS2 2nd leg. This would really hamstring any Labour plans to resurrect it, no? Also, a lot of aspersions being cast that one of the reasons the project costs escalated was the tunnelling through the home counties to avoid upsetting Tory voting constituencies in the home counties. Sounds like a bit of a stretch to me. | | | |

I think the tunnelling was because the route would go through areas of Natural Beauty & these are very much a no go throughout the land. HS1 is one of the major reasons that the Lib Dems are doing so well in Bucks & Berks. I don't think it's the reason for their upsurge in Herts though.
