Yeah, I preferred 5 at the back with one holding midfielder and the wingbacks pushing on to 4 at the back and 2 holding midfielders, but i imagine he'll be cagey. Trippier gets the nod for me, purely for his dead-ball delivery. Grealish starts for me.

An interesting interview with Simon Kuper on OTB. He starts out by surveying the state of the German national team, and then goes on to say that England fans are much more divided against each other (over taking the knee and Brexit) than hostile to Germany. It's the first 9 minutes of the interview.

There are huge divisions among the fans about the gesture but its Germany, at Wembley, in a knock out match...
It won't be an issue on Tuesday ðŸ‘

Theres not much I'd put my house on but Germany reaching the quarter finals is one them. I think England will get a proper lesson on Tuesday.
And if they do happen to turn up and put in a great performance, since I've been following the beautiful game, all I know is that the Germans have the luck of the Gods over us. Paul Parkers freakish deflection, Waddles inside of the post and out, Gazza's toenail, Lampards lob so far over the line it was nearer the border to Zimbabwe and those f-ing penalty shootouts. What other painstaking delight awaits us this coming week? Bastards.
Great beer though.

Croker strikes me as more of an 8 Brian, dictating play from the middle. Could do a job anywhere though I suppose like a modern day cruyff

I'd say they are now more than even considering we did win a World Cup with a goal that never crossed the line! We are due some luck our way to level it back up...
So yeah, we'll probably get beat, who knows.
I know some people will wildly disagree but I think Trippier should start. Experience and defensive qualities that will be vital. We've got great forward players, this obsession with full backs needing to be amazing going forward is fine in the premier league or against opposition that will sit back but not Germany.

Think the main decisions to make are who plays right wing back, who plays in central midfield and who is on the right of the front 3.
Would personally go with the below but has to be down to who is training well and looks in form
Would go Pickford Walker, Stones, Maguire Tripper Rice Bellingham Shaw Foden, Kane, Sterling
I'd be tempted for Grealish ahead of Foden though, is a tough call
Not dissimilar to what I’d have starting. I get the feeling that right wing back, centre mid and Saka/Foden are the big decisions.
I don’t think Southgate will trust Grealish enough to start him. I wonder if we’ll see Sancho or Bellingham get the nod as they play in the Bundesliga every week and will have a point to prove.

Any England team that doesn't start with Grealish is a 'lessened' team.....it puts the opposition under pressure defensively and puts us on the front foot which is an asset for us. Also we need to play tactics that are brave and not restrict players forward movement too much.

For me the only question is will he go with Mount. He comes out of lockdown I believe tomorrow and Southgate will play him if he thinks he as maintained his fitness, which he should have I think he will go with the same team as Croatia with one change McGurie for Mings I would like to have seem him go with Saka as a wing back, as I can't see Southgate changing much up top and will stick with his preferred players..... like most managers do, also with the amount of talent up front we have does he need to have wing backs bombing forward like other teams I have no issues with who he picks really.... as long as we create more for the forwards than we have in the first 3 games. Playing at Wembley should be a huge advantage to us hope we use it

Ahem.
We did actually score a 4th goal, you know.
Also: the spawny feckers were bloody lucky to be square at the end of normal time with a last minute goal after being played off the pitch for 90 minutes.

I'm more of an England well wisher than a fan, but I don't really get the pessimism tbh. Germany have been poor for some time - they were minutes from going out of the group and limped to a draw vs Hungary. Spain beat them 6-0 fairly recently.
Their key weakness is their formation. Gundo and Kroos are fine players, but they really struggle in a classic 2 in the middle. Then their back line - Hummels is a fine defender but age has caught up with him and Rudiger is insane.
3 in midfield, control the ball, pace vs their backline and England have a fantastic chance

Some very good points. I'd agree about using pace to attack them as they seem to play a very high line and don't seem to have the pace to recover if needed. Might be time to rest Kane and cut the cloth accordingly.

This Germany team are odd. They've been hammered by Spain 6-0 and lost 2-1 at home to North Macedonia recently. Very much at the end of their cycle which saw them win the World Cup.
If you take all emotion out of it and look from an entirely neutral point of view England have the better players, are playing at home and are in better form. They very much should win.
However it doesn't always work like that.
I think Southgate's biggest strength is that he knows how to cut through the noise when it comes to International football. I believe he will have a specific plan on how to beat Germany and as we've seen in the two wins v Croatia and Czech rep (who it turns out are 2 decent sides after all) he does know what he's doing.
In a way the Scotland game was the best thing that could've happened to us. Showed the players what happens if you play with to much emotion and play the game, not the occasion.
If we stick to a plan and don't panic then we will win. If we play to the emotion and occasion we will lose

Germany have been refused permission to train on the Wembley pitch before Tuesdays game due to heavy rain.
Germany have opted to stay put in their training camp and will fly in to London on Monday.
Apparently they are fuming with EUFA as they feel it’s a huge advantage to England.
Only 2K tickets available to German fans.
