| England Thread 🏴 on 13:28 - Jul 16 by DejR_vu | Yeah it didn't work but I'm intrigued by what people realistically think he could have done. Our first team has crumbled, camped itself on the edge of our box. It's easy after the event but looking at that bench who could he have brought on, and for whom, that screams 'yeah, that'll sort it'? Switching like-for-like isn't likely to solve the problem, so that rules out the wingers. No one's going to want Kane off. No one's going to take Bellingham off. Rice still looked out of sorts as the game went on so I think that was forced on him. You wouldn't take Anderson off. Rogers can drop back in. So who's left that could go into midfield that's going to be an improvement? Mainoo for Rice, maybe? But that makes us weaker imo. Like I say, I'm no Tuchel fan but those players are getting off lightly. They're on the pitch, they're imploding, they're giving the ball back at every opportunity, they're giving Messi acres of space. I can't believe Tuchel has told them to do any of that. These players need to take a huge chunk of responsibility. [Post edited 16 Jul 13:30]

"Switching like for like isn't going to solve the problem'. However as soon as Gordon came off Messi revelled in the wide open spaces on the right that Gordon would have been covering or rashford if he went like for like. He's took off cover on the right to stick on anothe defender. That's huge. That completely crippled us an attacking sense and defensively.

| England Thread 🏴 on 15:49 - Jul 16 by daveB | I think Henderson was there to help with Bellingham, they get on really well and team spirit was such a big thing for Tuchel he wanted him around. Wharton is a better player but I'm not sure he'd have played ahead of Rice or Anderson to be honest. Chalobah I didn't really get but your 4th/5th choice centre half is never that likely to play. Tuchel himself gave an interview with Gabriel Clarke when he took over and laid out where it had all gone wrong before and then when it came to the crunch he bottled it. Southgate arguably had more steel in the end of tournaments winning 2 of his 3 semi finals |
Taking Henderson really annoyed me. If you want him there because he's good for team bonding/mentorship etc then great, stick him in the coaching team. To leave out Scott/Wharton to accommodate Henderson as some sort of mascot was just strange - especially with Rice's struggles with his injury over the previous few months, and the demands of a WC. The criticism of our display after scoring on Wednesday is not a case of hindsight. I watched it with a load of mates, all amazed that the plan was to spend 30+ mins (plus possibly ET) camped out in our 6 yard box, hoping to get by on blocks and hacking the ball away, whilst surrendering the entire rest of the pitch and all momentum. I had messages from non-English mates asking if England were genuinely planning on spending the rest of the game in their own box. Everyone could see what was happening. It was just weird. I wouldn't have wanted to see us do that with 10 mins left. It's such a frustrating end to the tournament because we were comfortable until we scored and then we just completely bottled it and lost the plot.

I’m not saying that it isn’t,and I hope FIFA give them the biggest sanction possible, but it smacks of sour grapes that people complain about them showing a banner about something that they think is important to them and their country. Are their songs any worse than some of ours, including the Scottish national anthem that glorifies a battle fought over 700 years ago?

That’s the fullback’s job when he’s running the game from there. Spence should have been all over him. As has been pointed out, we had plenty of defenders on the pitch to deal with that but they all just disappeared and crumbled. The problem we had was getting out of our half and swapping Gordon for another winger wouldn’t have changed anything imo because they’d have either been standing there watching the game like the rest of us or joining everyone else on Pickford’s toes, which is the whole problem

The biggest sanction possible is £20,000 which is what they got for doing exactly the same thing in 2014. I'd consider £20,000 a reasonable price to pay for being able to trail a banner saying "Donald Trump is a massive cùnt" - might even get away with arguing that's not political, just fact.

Someone should have been able to block the first goal. The closest we got was Bellingham who had to travel from the penalty spot to outside the D. The second was abysmal defending. Everyone in the box, Messi picks out a player right in the middle of the goal with no one within touching distance of him. The ball goes over Stones’ head with the deeper defender, Konsa?, nowhere near. He should have been all over the scorer. These players need to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror. We'll have to agree to disagree cause Messi didn't start up high on Spence. He sat on the right in midfield the space where Gordon would pick him up and track him. Spence can't go into deep water there as the defence moves as a unit and when the balls on England's left he has to shuffle across. We should also put in a disclaimer and say they're the world champions and Messi has been finding holes in defences for over 20 years. You're never going to plug every hole cause football is such a fluid game. But IMO we could have defended so much better.

To be fair to Spence, he had been all over on that left side and the one time Messi got the ball over, Spence had clearly injured himself overstretching, and instead of going down he tried to carry on but it was too late I do agree with Ozexile, we had to bring on fresh legs further up the pitch, to close down their players before they could more often that not just send the ball back. We just had no target man because everyone sat behind the ball. I do agree with you from a later post though, that the first goal with all those defenders and we couldn't close him down sooner... There were 3 of their players lining up to take a shot and the only person to react was Bellingham, all too late sadly

Well true but at the end of the day the manager can only say so much, it's up to the players once they cross that white line (as we QPR fans well know!) Having said that I am curious as to what Tuchel said in that hydration break.

I really disagree with you on this as someone who lost a close family friend in the Falklands War Fans will be Fans and to be honest I get that we have been no better in the past and you get thousands chanting its impossible to stop that and your earlier post I agreed with because I assumed you were referring to the fans. But their players crossed a line by taking the banner and holding that up. It was wrong on so many levels and its not 'sour grapes' - They showed disrespect towards not only our armed forces that lost their lives but theirs too. Having a banner in the stands can easily be avoided by the media but when a football team celebrating a big win holds it up in the full knowledge that it would be seen by all, it crosses the line and not something that England as a Football team have been a part of. The Argentinian players knew exactly what they were doing of that I am sure, and when asked about it were not remorseful the following day either. I feel that is what some people are upset about and rightly so IMO

Disagree with this. You can't compare the behavior of drunken louts in pubs to that of millionaire footballers literally on a world stage. Any such political statement from a pot bellied prat in a pub is going to get a reach of a about 26 people. What those idiots did on the pitch will have been seen by half the globe. They have a responsibility as role models and they should not be using a fifa platform to make or imply political messages. If you're going to excuse their players' behaviour by comparison of extreme public behavior of our nationals... you can do the same in reverse. Would it be excusable for English players to spit on and burn Argentinian flags on the pitch after the game? As that's what Argentinian idiots have been doing outside bars back home.

Yeah, you'd think if the Malvinas/Falklands meant so much to them, they might play their football somewhere other than England on principle, but never mind. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo I hadn't seen this weirdo Barco running across the pitch getting in England players' faces after their first goal, until yesterday. I was amazed to find out this t wat is expected to sign for Chelsea this summer. I know they don't have a monopoly on cu nts, but they do seem to sign a lot of them.
