| Bristol City Reflection 14:43 - Apr 11 with 18511 views | bluenwhite10 | A really dire game today and probably the worse game I have watched in a long time. The referee had a go at making interesting with some bizarre petty decisions. Strange call to bring on Bennie, not sure what value he was going to add. Crossing practice 1st thing for training on Monday as that was really poor today. MOM Ronnie gets better every week. | | | | |

| Bristol City Reflection on 10:35 - Apr 12 by dmm | Anyone been to Mykonos? I was there in the mid 70s and visited two of the then infamous beaches: Paradise, Super Paradise, and Hell. Are they still called that? |
Yep, me too in 1970. Stayed on the first two but fortunately never went to Hell. Haven’t been back for fifty odd years and would imagine it’s totally unrecognisable now.
| Bristol City Reflection on 12:06 - Apr 12 with 2588 views | baz_qpr | Did not look like a lack of effort or will to me certainly not on our part, looked like two very strong well organised defences and a lack of attacking guile to open it up and then open the game up, needed a worldie from long range and I think it would have been a very different game | | | |
| Bristol City Reflection on 12:18 - Apr 12 with 2531 views | oldmeadoniansR | I thought Vale was the only one who looked like unlocking their defence. Some lovely one touch passing that was not always read by others. Completely irrationally I associate him with Chelsea and he has to work harder to get credit from me but he showed a lot of promise yesterday. I think I would have liked to see us mix it up and go a bit more direct to Kone. He does well in 50:50 situations and this would gave enabled us to play furter up the pitch a bit more. BC kept a high line as we did not have the pace to hurt them. | | | |
| Bristol City Reflection on 12:45 - Apr 12 with 2440 views | derbyhoop | From what I saw, Varane and Morgan played OK; Smyth's 2nd touch was, far too often, a tackle. Because of that neither of the strikers got in the game very much. I thought Kolli put himself about well at the start of the 2nd half. In the end it was a tedious stalemate with neither side deserving much from it. | |

Varane in the first five minutes swept a beautiful switch pass wide to the left, a beautiful switch pass wide to the right, and a penetrative forward pass to try and get Kone through, and I was siting there nursing one thinking who the fck is this and can we keep him? After that... rugby league loose forward. Big bloke in the middle of the pitch who can only pass backwards. Infuriating. The whole game was really. I just don't know how over the last decade or so we've allowed the sport to convince itself that completing 25 passes in your own half while going nowhere is a positive. Why am I spending so much of my Saturday watching gym fit young lads pretend they're hurt? Why are professional footballers spending so much of their Saturday trying to get the football game stopped? Fcking highly fcking annoying waste of my fcking time.

| Bristol City Reflection on 08:50 - Apr 12 by Hunterhoop | I don’t think we’re used to too many dead rubbers in our time in the Championship. That said, I cannot recall a game where both sides had so little interest in playing a game of football. The intensity and tempo was non-existent. It was so boring with so little quality because no one seemed to care enough to concentrate. Proper end of season stuff with both sides pining for the beaches of Mykonos. |
Over the past 60 years Hunter, I'ver seen many games that were worse (some far worse) than yesterday & not all were "end of season" matches. The worst I can recall of the top of my head was Boxing Day 1973 away to Tottenham. I doubt if any of the 24 players reached 500 yards of movement in the 90 minutes! Connell came up with the way that the entertainment would have increased yesterday. Mbenguie & Armstrong encountereing each other!

I was really disappointed they didn't put Armstrong on, just for a bit of fun. Still, when you've got Burgzorg to come on and boot the ball out of play that is hard to resist I suppose.

Applause from the SBS at half time too, including from me. Thinking back to how desperate we used to be to see him come on a goal down to the likes of Huddersfield, just to break the tedium with a bit of chaos.

I wish I could upvote this twice . Sitting at home today watching what should be a great days football but it isn’t and I know it won’t be . So much feigning injury now after every tackle or encounter that it reminds me of the WWE . And when the crowd is as quiet and bored as they were at LR yesterday for example , at every challenge or tackle you can here yelps and screams and cries of fake pain and it’s reached a point where I’m not sure I can cope with it anymore . It isn’t just that . There are so many things that ‘modern football’ throws up these days that infuriate me . Passing the ball incessantly sideways thinking it’s ’the Done thing’ to just pass it around the back for long spells is the scourge of a game I want to love , I do love , but find myself questioning if this is really enjoyable anymore . Ultimately it’s the fear of stepping out of what’s been regimented . The fear of trying something different in a game where it didn’t matter if it didn’t come off . Players having the ‘entertainment for the fans’ coached out them. Another 2 fingers stuck up at the fans who are ultimately there to be entertained. Proof of the pudding …the wonderful , unpredictable, erratic, exhilarating and brilliant Adel Taraabt in the end became a holding midfield player to become a regular at the top level . As for the World Cup coming up ….it’s going to stink for so many reasons isn’t it ? Apologies . Rant over

On that... We conceded straight after half time at Preston - AGAIN. We've now conceded a quarter of all our goals this year in the ten minutes after half time (16 - 23.8% I think). So I watched yesterday for signs that this had been talked about, addressed etc. Bristol City were out four minutes before us, lined up in shape, two lads on the ball ready to kick off, focused and ready to go. We came out in dribs and drabs several minutes later. One of the coaches put three cones on the ground by our dugout, which two players did a little skip over and the rest ignored and they were then promptly removed. The second half was then delayed because Rayan hadn't made it back out onto the pitch. Kone and Stephan both quite angrily beckoning him on out of the tunnel. Within two minutes of the game finally getting underway we're having to wait for him to sit down and do his boots up after getting fouled. And lo, Walsh is having to make a save down to his right from Twine to prevent it happening again. I was... less than impressed.

I don't understand why the referee doesn't restart the game with players missing & make them wait to come on. Kolli delayed the start of the second half against Portsmouth by being late back as well.

I said that. If I'd been refereeing we'd have kicked off. Not his problem we can't get a team on the field in time. I suspect some of the more experienced James Linington types would have done exactly that.

I think we did at least try to speed the game up. We are at our best when we play at speed and direct. I’d also say football is better that way. We did lack energy and pace and quality. Chair, Madsen, Burrell, Poku ..they all bring us this. What we need to do is to learn how to play against teams like Bristol that want to bore you to death.

Yup. We need to learn how to win when it's us in possession and us having to seize the initiative. Our response to the referee waving play on through that City injury in the last minute was instructive. Ponderous pisballing about trying to decide what to do with our last chance of the game.

I do think in 46 game league season, you can’t play the high tempo way all the time. The high tempo and direct way does seem the way Stephan wants to play. And maybe just maybe we get our key players fit, it could be an enjoyable season next season. I think they were indecisive about whether to put the ball out to be honest when that happened. Ronnie did well but we missed Dunnes leadership.

I am not making excuses, far from it, but I suspect Kolli may have been observing prayer time prior to coming back to the pitch as prayer times are normally around 1pm

Ronnie also showed good professionalism throughout. And Smyth. Tried hard, made some good runs and visibly pissed off when he didn't do as well as he wanted to. Kolli, Kone, RND, Bennie also wanted it. I also think Jimmy instead of JCS would have increased our tempo. (Sorry, that's in repsonse to Brian's post) [Post edited 12 Apr 19:57]

Thanks Logman, That's eight players you mention. I agree that all those players tried, but our team, as a unit, played at half-intensity, if that. My question was "Who are the players who give it their all, who maintain standards, who play at full pace, who are fully fit, who demand the same ethics of those around them." I'd say a lot less than eight gave their all. I'd say a lot closer to none.

I think some of them do. But you need 11 players to do it. That's why Middlesborough wiped the floor with us. 11 players robotically programmed to implement the game plan. That's what we need to go forward. We are making progress but we are not going to achieve it with players being out for 2 or 3 month periods.

If you *have* to be doing this still when you should have your feet up, why are you trying to enjoy it and win every week playing shaolin soccer? |
To be fair to Roy, he's having to deal with inheriting a side in terrible form, having: - 1 fit CB who is young and has played 10-ish games in English football. - A central midfielder playing at RB - A not amazing LB playing at CB and a rusty LB who has come back from injury and seemed to have lost all confidence, playing CB in a back five. - Riis often being underwhelming, but the alternatives being so limited that they are Delano fu cking Burgzorg, who is an absolute pile of lazy wa nk, or Sinclair Armstrong. Armstrong missed two chances that he should have buried when he came on as sub during Roy's first game and it says a lot about what Roy thinks of him that Burgzorg is somehow now the first pick from the bench. City have been crippled by defensive injuries and dreadful recruitment up front. Roy doesn't have much to work with. The lack of movement from City's players when either CB or Vitek had the ball was incredible. That said, they probably had marginally the better of chances. Nowadays, other than the odd epically sh it side (Argyle under Rooney) most Championship sides seem to be pretty effective at holding their shape and forcing opponents to knock the ball endlessly sideways and backwards, probing for an opening that seldom comes, and when it does come, and you're Bristol City, it comes to Sinclair Armstrong or Delano fuc king Burgzorg. The majority of games I watch seem to be same largely dull game over and over. Shape and positional discipline seems to have squeezed out risk taking and spontaneity. When Sorba Thomas came on for Wales against Bosnia the other week, he must have taken on and beaten his man, 6-7 times in 10 minutes, and I had genuinely forgotten what it feels like to watch a winger try and beat his man on the outside, never mind keep doing it every time he gets the ball. I think the five subs doesn't help. Midfielders and forwards* can charge round closing like demons, knowing they're only on for 60-70 mins. *forwards other Delano Burgzorg because that cu nt doesn't run for anything.
