Millwall are not that good but we bottled it against them home and away this season.
Poor mentality.
Not good enough especially for our loyal fans and the 3,000 that made the effort to be there.

Actually think they are good. Not flowing football often of course but in both halves they showed the two things they’re very good at. We were hideously ill-equipped to deal with balls into the box and the basic concept of running around. The grunt work of wanting to win challenges and second balls was beneath us first half but they’re the best in the league at that.
Second half they were perfectly organised to nullify everything. We would have been crap against anyone but they made us look more crap second half than we are.
Azeez does the things with the ball that Poku thinks he can do but does infinitely more off the ball. Every player in that team knows what they should be doing and when. We looked like we were only finding out our opponent ten minutes before kick-off. |  | | |

For every good game Varane has you’ll get one like that monstrosity and a couple more not loads better. He was atrocious. I’d like to think he’s embarrassed by his contribution to the second goal but he probably still thinks a half decent French team will be in for him in the summer.
He’s 24 so he’s not really a young player making mistakes or finding consistency. Two seasons now and not really improved overall. We can’t have him as first choice next season.
Plenty of other terrible performances and Mbengue looked very lucky to only get the yellow from my vantage point but Varane, bloody hell, have some pride man. |
For every good game Varane has you get closer to 20 games where he’s awful. I wonder if he would be better off as a centre back. He’d benefit from playing in a position with less of a technical requirement, he can just head and boot it away. He’s got the physical attributes I’m just not sure he’s got the brains to be any good in any position at this level. [Post edited 18 Apr 19:32]

But it’s misguided. It fails to recognise how you build a high performance culture.
It is not through creating excuses. It is not through accepting sub par effort. It is not through “bonus games (which is in essence what you are saying). It is not through picking players less suited to the immediate task at hand.
Standards. Standards. Standards.
You need to establish the standards, then you blood the young, high potential players into that environment. They understand the standards and they try to uphold them.
I get the club strategy but it is flawed. You need experience, physicality, game nous, even at the expense of technicality, within a team to be complimented with player with the technicality and upside.
Cook and Hayden could obviously have started today. It was an obvious option available to get the best result against this type of opponent. If standards were key. If defeat was always considered unacceptable, if understandable, you could play them. Set the bar. Let everyone else meet it, even if they are more technically gifted. You’ll have a better side in future as a result. |  | | |

Bigger stronger, more mobile, more hungry more intensity. 'Wall have blown loads of teams better than us away If they get promoted, good on them I think they will still come straight down. We needed to be on our game today, but Varane, Morgan, Mbengue, Smyth, Vale and Kone were 5/10 at best all showing their worst traits. Well we have improved on last season so our standards have improved. Stephan also made 4 changes at half time…and the right ones, so clearly we are trying to maintain a high standard. That starting eleven isn’t that ridiculous. JCS is our best defender. I’d say Edwards is pretty good too. It’s not that crazy to have the starting back 4. As for the midfield, whilst Varane has been poor all season, I’d say he’s been better recently and Hayden has not been that great in recent games. So, 50:50
Who would start. Madsen isn’t fit, so Morgan has to start. Varane and Hayden would and has been a nightmare. | | | |

Millwall have been out of the top flight for 30 + years, Brentford God knows how long, Bournemouth! Fulham wee Div 4 when I was a kid. All are past us.
Next season will be better precisely because we are playing younger players and because we have a young squad.

As soon as I saw the side we all called the defeat. We know what Millwall are like. It was a game for the likes of Cook and Hayden. Dunne missing again was huge. I assume he’s ‘injured’ as he’s got a move lined up to somewhere like Sheffield United. Varane and Morgan are absolutely powder puff in midfield. Varane is incapable of passing forwards. Morgan chasing shadow again. Highlighted again that midfield needs a big improvement next season alongside the full backs and goalkeeper. Poku was equally poor. Not the kind of game for him to start his first game in months. Stephan is incapable of getting his side up for London derbies. Really hoped after the debacle of the Millwall home game and the poor performance at Charlton away. Today was very much on the manager. | | | |

For me the defeat today is not the significant thing. Form (over the season) indicated they would beat us and so it proved. The significant thing for me is our inability to beat Preston and Bristol City - both comfortably beaten today. You pick up an additional 4 points from those two games and today’s defeat becomes irrelevant in terms of impact on the table. Same with that shock home defeat by Wrexham. The manner of the defeat was sickening, but would not have been nearly as impactful on our (then) play-off aspirations if we had beaten Stoke and Oxford in the two previous games. Next season, will be like this if we don’t win our winnable games, not losing away to teams pushing for automatic promotion. | | | |
