"No one likes you... YES that's true" Millwall vs QPR Match thread 07:24 - Apr 17 with 66033 viewsSpaceman_P

I feel this may be my swansong for the season.

I can't stand Millwall BUT

Millwall 1 QPR 2 Bennie with the winner.

They don't need no education
They don't need no ball control
The dark sarcasm from their fan base
Keeper leave the time wasting alone
Hey keeper leave that ball alone

All is all they're just another prick in Millwall

What's wrong with an inquest after we could / should have been at least four goals down in a London derby? You are hinting c'est la vie - acceptable even. Isn't that approach just why loads of people go on about the club lacking standards?

Make no mistake, we've just been absolutely slaughtered in the first half and basically laughed at in the second. Away to Millwall. Why should we just shrug our shoulders? How do we ever improve if we do that?

Too right I want an inquest. Wasting a Saturday and the hell of getting that train back to London Bridge just to be embarrassed in front of their gleeful support.

Bah.

Spot on

No one is asking for sackings or lighting the torches
But we got humiliated yesterday .
The commentators on Sky were laughing at us and giving out stats that made me hold my head in my hands .they were very critical of us all match.

Yet as stated earlier , some fans are ok with that .
“Its fine…whatever….it is what it is”

And that is a huge part of the problem .

No one is demanding the Earth .
Just some commitment and pride and passion, if not for themselves then for the fans and the club .

If we got £2.5m for Sinclair Armstrong, a player that couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo, then we can do significantly better with Rayan Kolli.

We didn't though.

Sadly, this thread has morphed into the typical inquest after a defeat. Posters are looking for scapegoats, finding them all over the pitch and in the dugouts.
It's not as if a loss was unexpected. Onthe Prediction League, 54% of us went for a Millwall win. Inthe preview both Clive and QPR_Hibs predicted a 2-0 loss.

Of course the performance wasn't what we wanted, especially the first 20 minutes.JS obviously thought the same, hence 4 changes at HT. Did he pick the right team to start with? Possibly not. But Cook hadn't played for weeks, Burrell had 15 minutes last week; Madsen and Chair were coming back from injuries. Should he have started all of those?

Look, Millwall have been top 6 all season. For a reason. They certainly had more resting on yesterday than we did. They flew out of the blocks and we couldn't cope. It's why we are mid table.

Not really. We could have put the reserves out first half and reasonably expected better. The style, quality and importance of the match to the opposition doesn’t justify that first half hour. Anyone can play badly on any given day but the lot of them just seemed to toss it off. Won’t be remembered in May let alone August but I think it’s fair enough to ask questions after being served up that.

He has a lot of fans on this board and in general and I think his recovery pace is something we needed for a long time .
But for me he carries on like a bit of a lunatic .
Today, and not for the first time, he threw himself to the floor expecting a free kick , sat there with his arms outstretched whilst Millwall proceeded to play round him and score their first goal . The game was 2 minutes old .
That’s happened a fair bit this season, amongst other nonsense carrying on and it can’t continue.
If he won’t defend properly then really he’s just a bit of a liability.

There has been games where he has defended very well and looked a very good signing.
But he’s unpredictable and at times unreliable. Decent defensive cover for next season for me .
But not much more, unless the coaching staff get hold of him in the summer and make big changes.

I expect that Mbengue will be a part of the first team squad next season even though he has many limitations (as do all of our players).

Hoewever, we do need to leave him out for one of our remaining matches, as a caution in all of them would see him suspended for the opening three games.

Given that we've known for a while we're not going up or down a lot of these remaining games have been about working out what we've got and need for next season.

Couple of the recent games (Pompey, Watford, Preston) made us think perhaps we're not that far off, perhaps we're nearly there, but we've been playing poor sides recently and only Portsmouth had anything riding on the game. It was always going to be interesting to see what the Millwall, Derby and Ipswich games looked like if they still had promotion riding on them.

As suspected, in goal, at full back, and central midfield we were found wanting. Lots of us have been saying this for months. That's the final straw with me and Varane yesterday, absolute chicken, and I'd take whatever we get offered this summer. If it's anything like the £5m the evangelists were raving about last summer then we should bake whoever offers us that again a cake. I'm also hoping yesterday largely ends the debate about keeping RND, though I suspect it'll heighten the one about Mbengue.

But the thing we lacked in that first half yesterday, and when we've played there the last two years, is not something you can buy. You've got to have the heart and the mentality to go with Millwall in those first 20 minutes, match them, show that you won't be cowed or bullied or beaten up, establish yourself in the game physically, and then play from there. We've failed in that three seasons in a row.

I don't know if it comes with lowering the average age of the team and we now don't have the experience and nous to deal with it, whether it's that point I've made about a "development club" which pitches itself as a play you come to do your time before going onto play somewhere 'proper', whether it's the manager, but our mentality in those games is nowhere near where it needs to be. And you won't compete for promotion or the play-offs if you're a soft touch.

We need to discover a nasty edge. Varane and Morgan v De Norre and Mazou-Sacko absolutely summed that game up yesterday, and our problems within it.

With our current, director of football, our club will never choose a proper, Championship manager, say like, Alex Neil.
Therefore imo, I don't think we'll ever get those hardened. experienced Championship midfield players we need.
In my time, watching QPR, the best two midfield grafters
were, Ian Holloway and Simon Barker.

Downvotes? It’s another great post .

I never started supporting this club to gripe about the CEO, or thumb through the accounts, or worry who we could possibly sell in the summer to get ourselves in line with P&S, for example .

I started supporting QPR because, as Marc Bircham said this week on the Open All R’s podcast, I had no choice .
Completely Brainwashed and bullied into it by my father 😀

No, but we all started supporting QPR for the love of those players (at the time), that stadium, that wonderful kit, the togetherness of friends and family and mostly winning on a Saturday afternoon.
I understand that losing the last few games of the season isn’t life and death or the be all.
But reading people on here saying that what we should ‘expect it’ and to ‘get on with it’, ‘stop moaning’, highlights some of the problem for me .

Standards

Some fans are ok with being bullied at Millwall .
Some fans were really non plussed by losing 7-1.
The same as some are happy to continue with both the full backs from yesterday ,into next season.
Good arguments about cost to replace them.
But surely we need to be trying to improve on them ? Clive’s point about RND not having any assists or goals this season summed up in 2 horrific crosses.
As defenders they are good. But full back has changed over the last 10 -15 years. There has to be more to their game .

I worry that results really aren’t the main aim of the hierarchy in charge at the moment . It’s about tomorrow . As GB said earlier ‘always jam tomorrow’.
Whilst being happy to settle for lower mid table year after year ?
Sooner or later it will catch us out.
There needs to be a balance struck. When our CEO is asked about what success looks like and ‘winning’ isn’t even in his thought process, it’s a concern for me .

Others will disagree and that’s fine .
Just how I see it

Unfortunately reminds me of the old gag of ‘free beer tomorrow ‘ - it’s always tomorrow and never happens.

We also lost 2-0 the last time I went to Millwall when we were top of the league. Gentle giant Dan Shittu visibly wilted under mild barracking from the home fans and then got himself sent off. But we were already one down at that point because we were playing like tarts.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Not a question of looking for scapegoats but the first twenty minutes was totally unacceptable.
The first goal was totally avoidable on a Sunday morning let alone championship level. If I had been Walsh both Vale and Morgan would have got a right verbal earful.
There have been too many times this season when,as a team, they have not turned up until the bus has gone. Nothing to do with talent just attitude.
Several players clearly aren’t good enough at this level , others are simply not consistent enough. As for the manager the jury is still out for me but thus far his first season anywhere has been his best and that doesn’t fill me with much optimism.

I never lie but I don't always tell the truth

The bit that I really don't like about this, which basically started with the fans forum in August (you have a chance to really help these players etc etc), continued recently with that Lee Hoos interview, is now being pushed aggressively by a few Twitter accounts, and I'm starting to see creep in a bit on here is this "you can choose what sort of fan you want to be".

Our football club is now in the total control of two very inexperienced guys in Nourry and Williams, they're doing whatever they want with it, and you're not allowed to question or criticise that or them - you can just choose whether you want to go along with it or not. But a football club is not some lad's PHD project, it's about the fans, and for the fans.

Fans are perfectly entitled to be unhappy with that yesterday. It's a London derby, a big away following, and we folded before we'd even begun. That's not good enough and people are allowed to be upset about that.

You're allowed to have a go at them if they lose 5-0 to Southampton. You're entitled to expect better than a 4-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough. If you want to rant and rave, or say nasty things on a message board, about that first half at Birmingham, that is entirely your prerogative. Football fans have been doing that since football was invented.

We want our team and our club to be better. We want it to succeed. And we're tired of being told tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow. It's always another building year, always another three year plan.

Increasingly I'm seeing and hearing this quiet, subconscious line being drawn between "good supporters" and "bad supporters". It's bolox. If you're able to stand and clap the little loves off after a 5-0 defeat that's up to you, but those of us who get angry about that are absolutely entitled to feel that way.

That was a rarity and an exception for that team though, it only lost six games all season and regularly went into really difficult situations and got a result.

Yesterday was very much the norm for this team.

So are you saying you only want to hear from people who are furious every time we lose otherwise they’re not proper Loft for Words posters?

You say you’re tired of the club promising tomorrow. Well I’m fed up with us talking about that and then tearing it up to bring in Charlie effing Austin sitting in the stands and Stefan Johansen and Andre frigging Gray to screw up FFP and then end up with finishing 11th in the league. Whoopy that was a great season.

I’d like us to try it for more than two seasons in a row. I’d like us to stick with a manager who seems to want us to progress and have some stability.

I don’t like losing to frigging Millwall any more than anyone else. I just think there’s another point of view to I’m raging every time we lose. Doesn’t make me a better fan. But doesn’t make you a better fan either. You travelling to every match and spending much of your life snd money on it does make you a better fan than me, granted, and chapeau for that but not everyone who comes on this board ro rip the players apart is as dedicated as you are. They still have their opinions and voice them happily. Do you want to only hear from them?

I don’t think it’s the people that don’t rage every week think they’re better fans I really don’t.

And if we do find out that the Nourry era is a total sham and we’ve not moved forward, at least we’ll have Madsen, Burrell and Kone to show for it rather than waving off Andre Gray and Jeff Hendrick to count their cash.

Surely it’s not about raging every week. I think everyone can agree some of the signings have been good or that some players have improved. This has been a better season than the last couple no matter what happens in the last few games but it’s hardly been brilliant and it would be naive to think we’re on course for much better next year as it stands.

It’s fair to acknowledge many performances this season have been beyond poor along with the handful that have been exciting and reason for optimism. That deserved to be another 4-0 first half. It’s ok to criticise the things that are wrong and celebrate the wins/things going well at the same time time. There are issues at the club beyond the first XI that contribute to the performance of the first XI.

We need a balance in our team. Stephan’s record in London derbies this season has been shocking. He hasn’t learnt after the Millwall home game and Charlton away game. He continues to persist with Walsh who is an absolute bag of nerves. Dunne has vanished from the team. Mbengue is getting worse at right back. Another season of not addressing the full back positions. The centre of midfield is another annual problem. I could have told you prior to the game yesterday that Varane and Morgan would be eaten alive. They are absolutely powder puff. Stephan is just not learning. We know Millwall are packed with giants. But we play with all our tiny players. There’s no physicality in our side with that starting 11. Yesterday was evidence for me that Nourry and cycling Ben have been in Stephan’s ear to play certain players like the Plymouth away debacle. If Nourry, cycling Ben and Belk don’t address these glaring issues in the side in the summer then it will be the same problems again next season. What team would want to sign the likes of Varane and Morgan? They’re not good enough for this level.

I left when the 2nd goal went in I just can't be bothered to stick around nowadays if the players can't be bothered.

Actually really looking forward to the end of the season as although it's been marginally better than last year it's still been poor and not enough progress made .

As for the manager I'm not a fan and never have even but he isn't the issue so no point changing him .

Like others have said until we get some standards around the club nothing will change .

Obviously it’s a loss and a chance for the knives to come out. But is it really time to write off so many of our players and the manager due to 45 minutes admittedly woeful display. Ideally of course we would have started with those of our players that finished the match. But they were obviously coming back from injury. If they had been injured after playing 60 minutes the complaints would flood in about not being able to manage injuries properly.

Seriously if you took Millwall’s best four players out of that team (five including Dunne) would they have started so well? It’s not about standards it’s about talent and experience. You could set the Sheffield Wednesday team up brilliantly and prepare them for weeks, their fans could expect to win and they’re still going to struggle against Coventry nine times out of ten.

We could have started with Cook rather than Ronnie or JCS at the back but Ronnie had been playing well and JCS had looked good when he came on so I understand why he didn’t. I don’t think you could guess that so many of our players could play so badly in one match. Vale and Smyth have been good recently, but they and Poku just weren’t able to press or win the ball well enough to support our defensive midfield. We were so open because we couldn’t get hold of the ball and weren’t closing down quickly enough.

Burrell, Chair, Hayden and Madsen made a massive difference. They put Millwall’s defence under so much more pressure and kept winning the ball back. But these are players in their mid to late 20s. They’re our most talented and valuable players. But we also need ALL of our forwards to learn how to close down the ball from higher up the pitch so we’re not defending only in our own third putting everyone under pressure in the box but all the way from the attacking third.

I’m okay with Stephan giving a chance to younger players to get some experience when we’re at our least pressure to win with no chance of anything happening for us at either end of the table. There’s as many people okay with that as whinging about it. I think it’s shown us though that Morgan needs a loan desperately next season, at least for the first half of the season. He has to learn to be on the front foot to sniff out danger, and can’t hesitate like he did in closing down for the first goal. I also think we can’t invest in RND next season. He’s solid and reliable generally but he can’t offer enough going forward to justify paying the obvious big wage he’d be expecting. No assists or goals all season plus not being able to interplay with Chair yesterday wouldn’t make me want to re-sign him.

I like Stephan. I think he does expect high standards and does get frustrated when players suddenly all decide to play at their worst at the same time. But I think he’ll have learnt a lot from this season. I think we’ve done better with our recruitment this season than last in terms of physicality but I would urge us prioritise that again this transfer window.

One other thing that I find extremely frustrating is the number of times other teams are awarded so many soft fouls by refs (14 compared to our six). Is it they cheat better (Smyth aside)? Are we making it too obvious when we pull shirts? Do we not make enough crowd noise and complain at refs putting pressure on them to decide in our favour? Do the other teams’ players put more pressure on refs so it’s easier to give 50/50s in their favour. Certainly the Millwall crowd called for every single tackle to be a foul. It’s infuriating.

Have to disagree about the soft fouls, this often gets thrown in when we lose.

Invariably, if you’re slower, weaker and off balance in a tackle it shows and any shirt pulling is going to be looked at as a foul. If your quick to the ball, in charge and balanced you’ll be the one who is expected to come out with the ball so any minor indiscretion you’ll be more likely get away with.

We often commit petulant fouls because of the former. It all goes hand in hand with us so often not being quite ‘on it’.

My post was mainly not about the balances in the team and I’m surprised you’ve taken it as that. It was about Clive’s point that he feels he’s not able to voice his opinions. And his view that people who don’t get furious about losing think they’re better fans than those that do. Added onto it was his point that he’s fed up with looking to the future.

If you look at the posts across the site there are vastly more negative than positive or balanced ones after a loss so I just don’t see his point at all as most people agree with him.

I often agree with what you post, nix, but I think you're getting this thing wrong. All I think Clive is pointing out is the right for football fans to have a moan if their team puts in an unacceptable performance. And let's face it, we've been doing that long before social media arrived as a means to share our angst.

And I say we have the "right" to do so because of the investment we make in our club. It's very often for a lifetime. I believe a football club is its supporters. Indeed, we are QPR.

You know it was Millwall, right?

Not a parachute payment club. Millwall. Similar capacity, 9k season tickets, average attendance of 17k v QPR's 16.7k...all intents and purposes identical clubs.

The difference between them is QPR decided against appointing Steve Gallen and appointed Christian Nourry. So Millwall appointed Steve Gallen.

This is the direct comparison between that decision, between those two DOF's philosophies.

Millwall didn't stick a load of FFP busting players in their squad, so mentioning us doing that previously is a straw man. They just built a team in the same amount of time we have that is actually fit for Championship purpose, front to back, this season. Not in the next three years. And if their message to the Millwall fans was "what kind of fan do you want to be?' they'd be ripped to shreds.

Millwall's jam tomorrow is today. Big summer for QPR getting us up to speed.

Absolutely not, where have I said that? I've said the opposite - that everybody is entitled to their point of view and to express it.

Bah.

I wasn't advocating feeble acceptance of a defeat in London Derby. But this thread includes posters wanting us to get rid of almost every player who started yesterday + the manager, the CEO, and many of the backroom staff. Cook and Kone seem to be the exceptions.
IMHO, it's OTT.
