"No one likes you... YES that's true" Millwall vs QPR Match thread 07:24 - Apr 17 with 65948 viewsSpaceman_P

I feel this may be my swansong for the season.

I can't stand Millwall BUT

Millwall 1 QPR 2 Bennie with the winner.

They don't need no education
They don't need no ball control
The dark sarcasm from their fan base
Keeper leave the time wasting alone
Hey keeper leave that ball alone

All is all they're just another prick in Millwall

I am not a big fan of the Manager TBH........however I don't have any real problems with the Team that he (I presume it was he) selected. He has many injuries who would be in the starting 11 but not fit.

Today many of the players failed 'big time' so the result was expected when players play very poorly........the totally over-rated Morgan was very poor, likewise Vale was shockingly bad and the worst player on the pitch, Smyth had his worst game for some time and so did Mbengue. Varane was also very poor. Kone was back to his old ways despite his excellent workrate. That is 6 players who were at best a 4 marking. Sadly we started very slowly and were punished accordingly.

Big improvement in the 2nd half with the introduction of Burrell, Hayden, Cook & Madsen and latterly Chair.......we were a match for an OK rather large Millwall team.

Hopefully some of the players introduced at half time will be available to start against Swansea.

For me the defeat today is not the significant thing. Form (over the season) indicated they would beat us and so it proved. The significant thing for me is our inability to beat Preston and Bristol City - both comfortably beaten today. You pick up an additional 4 points from those two games and today’s defeat becomes irrelevant in terms of impact on the table. Same with that shock home defeat by Wrexham. The manner of the defeat was sickening, but would not have been nearly as impactful on our (then) play-off aspirations if we had beaten Stoke and Oxford in the two previous games. Next season, will be like this if we don’t win our winnable games, not losing away to teams pushing for automatic promotion.

I agree on the Wrexham and Oxford games. But I wouldn’t read too much into the games since we were officially safe and out of playoff contention. We have improved from last season but I’m almost of the mind that I’d rather we get beat in the next 3 if it means the club will take a proper look at and try to improve the central midfield. I only rate Madsen now of our central midfielders. We need at least 2 more….maybe 3. But I fear the club won’t do anything about it if we say finish 10-12th and get 4 more points. Varane has to go permanently. Morgan should go on loan. Hayden and field…one should go. I’d then get 3 midfielders in. We do have a goalie and left back issue but it’s central midfield where we are woeful. The club needs to realise that.

I said on page 1 that a lot was going to hang on how we approached midfield. First half, we got it so badly wrong it was embarrassing. Less a midfield, more of a turnstile. The difference made by Madsen, Hayden and, later, Chair was stark. What really surprised me was starting without Cook: if Jimmy is unavailable, Cook is our best header of the ball. This was a cock up against a team like Millwall and entirely predictable.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

Not sure what good sending Morgan out on loan would do......game time!!, he is getting plenty of game time here. The question is re Morgan is 'is he good enough'?? - not sure that he is. Field is struggling to get game time at Norwich, just like he was here - he needs to be released, transferred unless he is going to start in CM (& nowhere else), Hayden was a poor panic buy - he needs to go, Varane needs to be educated re passing the ball forward but not sure that he is good enough anyways, he is very 'hot & cold'.

I'd sign RND if possible and get a couple of 'proper' midfielders into the starting line up.

Glad I spent today doing something else. No surprises - a rinse and repeat from last season's game replete with Dunne missing both times. Deja vu. Plus ca change. It's kind of pathetic really.

If we got £2.5m for Sinclair Armstrong, a player that couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo, then we can do significantly better with Rayan Kolli.

IF we got £2.5m for Armstrong. Did we? I don't think so - that was figured out in the extensive analysis of the club accounts recently.

Regardless, no one but you thinks Kolli is going to be sold for £10m. A tenth of that would be more realistic.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

That was meant to be an upvote, not down. I think Stefan made mistakes in his start 11 selection yesterday, the biggest one was not starting Cook instead of JCS in view of Wall's known physicality. For the same reasons I think he should have started Hayden instead of Morgan. I share your views on Morgan who I think is well-overated, though he may come good with a good loan at a lower League Club.

In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really matter that we played like tarts and were clearly ill-equipped for what is a quite specific challenge relative to the drudgery of mostly similar Championship teams.

But it was like the tactic, if there was one, was to ignore what they’re going to bring and just out-play them. That never has and never will work at Millwall. Much better QPR teams than this one against worse Millwall teams have lost there by not understanding the basic need to win at least occasionally in midfield, stop crosses, not give cheap free kicks, second balls etc. You get to play once that mini battle is won in the first 15 minutes.

The manager didn’t seem to have prepared the team. The team shouldn’t need loads of preparing for the basics of competing in a football match but many of them first half simply weren’t up for it. Again, annoying having wasted half a day and money on it but not the end of the world this time but concerning for the future. The result itself wasn’t a surprise but that first 35 minutes was an embarrassment regardless of the situation we and they are in.

Varane and Morgan were dreadful but when you’ve got Smyth giving the ball away for fun, Vale constantly kicking the ball into the ether (I’d love to know why there’s no middle ground with this fella) and Poku, whilst the better of the three, looking like a man running through quick sand, it must be a tough gig being a central midfielder.

What we should have learnt by now is that three behind the CF against powerful sides is a suicide note but when your manager thinks it’s a good idea to play non heading centre backs against Millwall you can’t help wonder if he’ll ever get it.

For every good game Varane has you get closer to 20 games where he’s awful. I wonder if he would be better off as a centre back. He’d benefit from playing in a position with less of a technical requirement, he can just head and boot it away. He’s got the physical attributes I’m just not sure he’s got the brains to be any good in any position at this level.

It's all clear to me.

Thete is one bar for a football club to be ultimately measured by - league position of the first team.

Nice to have agood community project, a good youth set up and players coming through, an effective women's structure, a profitable balance sheet, a nice ground, good stewarding, great season ticket pricing and stucture, nice box office staff, a young first team, etc., etc. BUT none of that really counts for much if your first team can't improve league position.

I get that some of those things might contribute to improvements in the first team, but to me thet are all secondary.

Playing your entire dev squad in the first round of the cup was the epitome of it all this season. First team undercooked and not ready for the start of the season, so throw the kids in. How many of them have actually played minutes since? Utterly pointless exercise.

Pre-empting all the downvotes, I am not saying nobe of it counts, merely that it is not primarily why anyone supports this, or any other, football club.

Wherever Varane plays, he has to learn to make decisions quickly. He often passes backwards because he's dawdled on the ball, been closed down and has no other option.

I don't rate Varane much but in his defence he's looked completely shot of confidence this season. He can play better. As for selling him on, no club is going to want him just now so he'll be with us next season. The coaches have got their work cut out to get his head sorted.

Good post .

They were awful in the centre of midfield but you make good points.
I’m not sure what JS does all week but it looked like there was no consideration to who we were playing against at all in his preparation. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but he seems so rigid and wedded to his 442 that he almost beats himself at times before the game even starts .
He has said previously that he is flexible but he is limited with the players we have . I’m not sure that’s always the case.
I don’t think we should always curtail to the opposition every week.
But Millwall away is often ‘horses for courses’. Most of us know that .
I like JS but I do think he has weeks where he looks like he hasn’t done any homework at all.

Obviously it’s a loss and a chance for the knives to come out. But is it really time to write off so many of our players and the manager due to 45 minutes admittedly woeful display. Ideally of course we would have started with those of our players that finished the match. But they were obviously coming back from injury. If they had been injured after playing 60 minutes the complaints would flood in about not being able to manage injuries properly.

Seriously if you took Millwall’s best four players out of that team (five including Dunne) would they have started so well? It’s not about standards it’s about talent and experience. You could set the Sheffield Wednesday team up brilliantly and prepare them for weeks, their fans could expect to win and they’re still going to struggle against Coventry nine times out of ten.

We could have started with Cook rather than Ronnie or JCS at the back but Ronnie had been playing well and JCS had looked good when he came on so I understand why he didn’t. I don’t think you could guess that so many of our players could play so badly in one match. Vale and Smyth have been good recently, but they and Poku just weren’t able to press or win the ball well enough to support our defensive midfield. We were so open because we couldn’t get hold of the ball and weren’t closing down quickly enough.

Burrell, Chair, Hayden and Madsen made a massive difference. They put Millwall’s defence under so much more pressure and kept winning the ball back. But these are players in their mid to late 20s. They’re our most talented and valuable players. But we also need ALL of our forwards to learn how to close down the ball from higher up the pitch so we’re not defending only in our own third putting everyone under pressure in the box but all the way from the attacking third.

I’m okay with Stephan giving a chance to younger players to get some experience when we’re at our least pressure to win with no chance of anything happening for us at either end of the table. There’s as many people okay with that as whinging about it. I think it’s shown us though that Morgan needs a loan desperately next season, at least for the first half of the season. He has to learn to be on the front foot to sniff out danger, and can’t hesitate like he did in closing down for the first goal. I also think we can’t invest in RND next season. He’s solid and reliable generally but he can’t offer enough going forward to justify paying the obvious big wage he’d be expecting. No assists or goals all season plus not being able to interplay with Chair yesterday wouldn’t make me want to re-sign him.

I like Stephan. I think he does expect high standards and does get frustrated when players suddenly all decide to play at their worst at the same time. But I think he’ll have learnt a lot from this season. I think we’ve done better with our recruitment this season than last in terms of physicality but I would urge us prioritise that again this transfer window.

One other thing that I find extremely frustrating is the number of times other teams are awarded so many soft fouls by refs (14 compared to our six). Is it they cheat better (Smyth aside)? Are we making it too obvious when we pull shirts? Do we not make enough crowd noise and complain at refs putting pressure on them to decide in our favour? Do the other teams’ players put more pressure on refs so it’s easier to give 50/50s in their favour. Certainly the Millwall crowd called for every single tackle to be a foul. It’s infuriating.

Agree JS is very limited and rigid in sticking to a 442. Also Millwall needed the win, we didn't. We could have played just to contain them in first half and hit them on the break. Strikes me JS is a bit lazy and didn't bother to do the homework.

I don't pretend to know how to organise a football team. I'm sure if I tried to do so at any level I'd be laughed out of dressing rooms (if I was lucky).

But I know enough not to have 6ft 4in Jake Cooper - man mountain, club captain, 31-year-old veteran Championship master of dark arts - marked by the 20-year-old 6ft stick insect Kieran Morgan at corners and throw-ins. From the very first it looked an absolute mismatch.

But at least he was marked. Crama - also 6ft 4 and a very good player - had a free header from a throw on the edge of the box that he should have scored with early on.

It looked to me like there had been no prep until half time when he suddenly organised the team for the opponent at last. But that was such a weak team performance and it felt Millwall were toying with Rangers. They could've and should've scored twice as many.

The system, the players selected...it just looked really off. I don't like three at the back, but if you're missing Jimmy Dunne away at Millwall and you have Steve Cook to play between fancy footballer CBs Edwards/JCS, that was the game to sacrifice diddy men Smyth or Vale for him, for example.

It just all looked so half-arsed and passive, which has happened quite often through the season, and I find worrying, beach or no beach.

Downvotes? It’s another great post .

I never started supporting this club to gripe about the CEO, or thumb through the accounts, or worry who we could possibly sell in the summer to get ourselves in line with P&S, for example .

I started supporting QPR because, as Marc Bircham said this week on the Open All R’s podcast, I had no choice .
Completely Brainwashed and bullied into it by my father 😀

No, but we all started supporting QPR for the love of those players (at the time), that stadium, that wonderful kit, the togetherness of friends and family and mostly winning on a Saturday afternoon.
I understand that losing the last few games of the season isn’t life and death or the be all.
But reading people on here saying that what we should ‘expect it’ and to ‘get on with it’, ‘stop moaning’, highlights some of the problem for me .

Standards

Some fans are ok with being bullied at Millwall .
Some fans were really non plussed by losing 7-1.
The same as some are happy to continue with both the full backs from yesterday ,into next season.
Good arguments about cost to replace them.
But surely we need to be trying to improve on them ? Clive’s point about RND not having any assists or goals this season summed up in 2 horrific crosses.
As defenders they are good. But full back has changed over the last 10 -15 years. There has to be more to their game .

I worry that results really aren’t the main aim of the hierarchy in charge at the moment . It’s about tomorrow . As GB said earlier ‘always jam tomorrow’.
Whilst being happy to settle for lower mid table year after year ?
Sooner or later it will catch us out.
There needs to be a balance struck. When our CEO is asked about what success looks like and ‘winning’ isn’t even in his thought process, it’s a concern for me .

Others will disagree and that’s fine .
Just how I see it

In my eyes, JS has done OK this season with the better squad available to him. The real concern is that we still have a propensity to get out-thought and out-fought and completely collapse. If we had been 5-0 down after 30 minutes yesterday no-one could have complained. Beach or no beach that is simply unacceptable. Yet it is, it's QPR. How can you have a season where we finish mid table yet have lost 7-1, 5-0 away and 0-4, 1-4 at home? You get done once like that and if you are a half-decent team (which we obviously are) it simply does not happen again in the season.

Don't agree about the ref. Most refs would have sent off Mbengue for that awful challenge. JS next season simply has to learn how to set up for these sort of matches.

ok the dust settles, most qpr fans accept we were low key, not good and over run in all areas, our only shot on goal was a madsen weak, lame almost pass to their goalie in 89th minute .
but we are well placed in mid table, game meant little to us with regards to stying up, going up etc it was a london derby yes with little pride and they were more up for it as chasing promotion .
for me now, it would be a real indicator as many players getting back from injuries ( some seemed too long with little info to us fans, ie the chair mystery ) that if we get a full first team 11 can we wallop someone? to show hope for next season? and why has our season been runs of losses, then wins in batches of 5 or 6?

Sadly, this thread has morphed into the typical inquest after a defeat. Posters are looking for scapegoats, finding them all over the pitch and in the dugouts.
It's not as if a loss was unexpected. Onthe Prediction League, 54% of us went for a Millwall win. Inthe preview both Clive and QPR_Hibs predicted a 2-0 loss.

Of course the performance wasn't what we wanted, especially the first 20 minutes.JS obviously thought the same, hence 4 changes at HT. Did he pick the right team to start with? Possibly not. But Cook hadn't played for weeks, Burrell had 15 minutes last week; Madsen and Chair were coming back from injuries. Should he have started all of those?

Look, Millwall have been top 6 all season. For a reason. They certainly had more resting on yesterday than we did. They flew out of the blocks and we couldn't cope. It's why we are mid table.

Another considered and very good post .

I don’t agree with all of it (don’t really think we put their defence under any pressure in the second half - we had the ball, but created zero) but do agree with an awful lot of it.

Regarding Morgan, I just think he needs to bulk up . He needs to still grow into his body and become a physical presence . At the moment he is too lightweight and easily bullied.
He’s still young and learning and with the help of the fitness and performance army and the many nutritionists on the QPR gravy train , they really should already have a plan in place to improve his physicality.
I agree he needs to play , but every game is different and he needed an extra body alongside him to play against a team like Millwall.
He learned nothing yesterday. You don’t learn too much by chasing shadows.
So what good does it do?
You can hark back to throwing Esquerdinha in against Ipswich or Tylon Smith against Middlesbrough.

That isn’t benefitting the player, it’s damaging the player and I think that’s what someone at QPR doesn’t understand.
Up to the individual who you think is making those calls .

What's wrong with an inquest after we could / should have been at least four goals down in a London derby? You are hinting c'est la vie - acceptable even. Isn't that approach just why loads of people go on about the club lacking standards?

Make no mistake, we've just been absolutely slaughtered in the first half and basically laughed at in the second. Away to Millwall. Why should we just shrug our shoulders? How do we ever improve if we do that?

Too right I want an inquest. Wasting a Saturday and the hell of getting that train back to London Bridge just to be embarrassed in front of their gleeful support.

Bah.

ok the dust settles, most qpr fans accept we were low key, not good and over run in all areas, our only shot on goal was a madsen weak, lame almost pass to their goalie in 89th minute .
but we are well placed in mid table, game meant little to us with regards to stying up, going up etc it was a london derby yes with little pride and they were more up for it as chasing promotion .
for me now, it would be a real indicator as many players getting back from injuries ( some seemed too long with little info to us fans, ie the chair mystery ) that if we get a full first team 11 can we wallop someone? to show hope for next season? and why has our season been runs of losses, then wins in batches of 5 or 6?

Still in the same cycle of the club telling us nothing about injuries .

The club captain is out injured.
No news , no nothing .(unless I missed it)

Last Saturday a ‘highly regarded’ club employee was telling me he’d been told Jimmy was being rested but as he was telling me the screen behind him (sky sports news) was saying he had a knee problem .

The cloak and dagger nonsense does my head in.
