Well that opening game got me nodding off nicely. VAR/the laws of the game the talking points as always. Well done FIFA. Not long before the highlights are just a reel of refereeing/VAR decisions.

If that was a foul on the goalkeeper I give up.
Wtf was the VAR seeing and the referee should have stck with his own decision to award the goal.
The goalkeeper went into the forward who just stood his ground. |
For years I thought referees made crap decisions like that as the game was moving too fast and they couldn't see everything. Now they can watch it again in slow motion and still get it completely wrong I realise they are just completely useless.

The way they were playing I was praying for Netherlands to win the penalty shootout. Morocco were seriously impressive. I honestly think if they continue to play like that they have a chance at winning the bloody thing.
I don’t think Canada has much of a chance against them either - but this is the World Cup and stranger things have happened! |
Nah, they were hanging on against Scotland. I was impressed with them v Brazil, but not against Scotland. That was a game they should have gone on to win 3-0 as Brazil did. Instead Scotland made them look very ordinary as the game went on. Still hard to see past France for their attacking prowess. | | | |

I decided to sleep through the German penalties loss and get up for the Dutch penalties loss.
I thought the Moroccans deserved it anyway but noticed Hakimi looked pretty annoyed to have lost the toss and have to take them in front of that smallish group of Dutch behind the goal.
Turned out of course that both teams were a bit boss eyed - mad to watch. And the Dutch goalkeeper makes a world class save in extra time only to hook it into his own net later own - unfortunate. Jimmy Somerville and Timberlake both among Holland's better players but both in tears at the end. |  | | |

I'm sitting on the fence as to whether it should have been disallowed as I've certainly seen a lot less contact given as fouls than last night's was. I've also seen far more contact not given!
If that contact had been ignored & a goal given against Rangers, the whole message board would be up in arms. As we would be if we had a goal ruled out for the same!
The penalty shoot out was made even funnier by Paraguay missing their 4th & 5th to prolong Germany's agonies & no European country has reached the last 16 yet, although at least 7 should. | | | |

I thought it was very, very soft, but my feeling is they're keen to avoid the situation we've got ourselves into in this country where every corner is rush hour on the Central Line so TBH if it avoids that happening I'm okay with over protecting keepers.
You probably will see keepers chucking themselves about now trying to buy fouls, as he undoubtedly did last night.

I do agree it was a foul but how it's worked so far is these 50/50 calls the VAR has stuck with the ref's on field decision in most cases. It felt harsh but was quite funny to see them go out. |  | | |

I watched both so pretty wrecked today. Tough quarter-final for France if results go as expected - Morocco are on a fantastic unbeaten run and you can see why the way they came back yesterday against a decent Netherlands side. [Post edited 30 Jun 11:49]

The disallowed goal was interesting. It felt to me Gill leant into Anton, Anton went 'geroff' and Gill threw himself to the ground.
In the live moment I felt it was goal, then first reply I felt 'foul' then after a couple more watches I thought 'no foul' for the reasons mentioned above.
The problem with VAR is that it is still down to human interpretation. It's shown itself, in the PL at least, to not have really been the saviour of football so let's just go back to leaving it to the ref & lino's until a better solution can be found.
Although I do fear the genie is now out of the bottle so they'll keep pursuing with it in the hope they can get it right because saving face is far more important than saying "we tried it, with best intentions, but it's not been fulfilled as hoped so we'll try something else". |  | | |

Not sure about now, but a few years back I did a lot of research into penos and the stutter-stop is actually slightly more successful, globally.
I didn't share the info with any players, though, as I have a funny feeling that their success rate goes down for non-elite players? Just a thought. |  |
