| King Charles on 16:08 - Jun 26 with 7929 views | dmm | As you've mentioned it, I feel I should state what an utter injustice it is that Charles gets away with paying a measly £12.9 million in tax. The Sovereign Grant (taxpayers' money) is £137.9 million, and he receives other income such as £25 million from the Duchy of Lancaster, income from Balmoral Castle and Sandringham, plus undisclosed assets and investments. And he decides what tax he pays as he's not actually required to pay any at all. The monarchy has ripped off the people of these islands for over a thousand years, and continues to do so. | | | |

I’m a fiercely proud Englishman and love this country, its culture and history…. but I’ve never been a royalist. Agree with the above post. The Royal Family is a massive scam. Everything they do is designed to preserve their wealth and status. They are our ‘Cosa Nostra’.

They should be guillotined one by one each and everyone of them, varying figures are being released but £370m price tag for the renovation of Buckingham Palace, funded by the tax paying public. A family infested by bastard sex perverts starting with Lord Louis Mountbatten who was thankfully blown to pieces. The King and that dreadfully ugly chunt of a wife/horse can fck right off. Whatever happened to that god awful fat bastard Andrew? well he's hiding In the woods on the King’s private Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, you couldn't make this shyte up. Keep bowing and curtsying to these freaks.

I feel the very opposite about our country right now, but I do agree with you about the Royal Family. Privilege is baked into their existence and entrenches inequality. It has no place in a modern society.

I'm ambivalent about the Royals, but after living in Windsor I can see that they do have an impact on the local tourist economy at least, and the royal parks are great places to be in. Whats the alternative, we have more politicians around? I've tried to work it out, the Royal family cost me, personally between £1.30 or £7 per year. I'd rather my money goes to them than someone like Farage
| King Charles on 17:08 - Jun 26 with 7727 views | stowmarketrange | I have no issues about living in a monarchy, but I do disagree with lords and ladies having stately homes and land because their forefathers fought on the right side in a war fought centuries ago. But can you have one without the other? | | | |
| King Charles on 17:18 - Jun 26 with 7698 views | SimonJames | Switching to a ceremonial presidency (e.g. like Germany or Ireland) would save a few million a year (but that's virtually a rounding error for a £2.7 trillion economy. (And having an executive role as President i.e. like Trump, would cost way more.) With regards to bad behaviour, in a hereditary system with an extended family there is always the possibility of some wrong 'uns. But at least that keeps the media busy. | |

I think you're onto something here. Everyone gets to nominate an amount they are willing to pay towards the royal family each year and that's their budget to live off

Agree. So much hatred for something that would save us each about £7 a year. Not that it would, we’d have some cnt of a president, no doubt politically elected who’d likely cost us as much if not more. They’re totally harmless, just figureheads who are about as neutral as anyone you could wish to meet. This hostility is quite depressing really.

It's not really about the money though, it's about democracy. An unelected head of state who gets to appoint up to 26 bishops in our second chamber isn't just a figurehead. Neither is the documented pressure the Royal family apply to our MPs. Being silent about growing inequality, the genocide in Gaza, rising racism etc isn't neutrality either, it's either evasion or complicity. This isn't the 16th century, inequality & poverty isn't accepted by a forlock tugging majority as the natural order of things. But yeah, a president with the power of a Trump would be disaster.

Ah, there's always someone with the erroneous assumption that not having a monarch as head of state necessitates a change to a presidential system. We have a parliamentary system with the PM as head of the executive, so the simple change would be to the Irish model, for example (there are many others). That said, scrapping the bloated, cronyist House of Lords is a far more pressing matter. [Post edited 26 Jun 23:18]

Indeed, kr. Your bracketed statement that there are many other models within a parliamentary system could be widened out to how society runs itself. Without starting up a new theme here, representative democracy is not the only way to govern a society. Some ancient societies successfully organised themselves without any central authority whatsoever.

This! When the revolution comes, one of the first things on the agenda will be getting rid of the House of Lords. Selection by patronage in this day and age is utterly ridiculous.

There's nothing in this thread that hasn't been discussed by the media many times, so why would it give Clive grey hairs? And who is walking away? We're having this conversation right now. I'd be happy to continue it with you or anyone else, though perhaps via private messaging as many on here will not be interested.

Dont recall quoting you or addressing you so no, I dont want to discuss via a PM or have a conversation with you really. Because people start posting links to other things and go way off topic that's why. Its no different to political threads - So I'll take some of my own advice on this one and just hide the thread and let you crack on.

Maybe this can finally solve it - those who want to can put in £50 each for them to live off and then get a tax rebate share of the £500m they’re estimated to bring into the economy every year. Those who don’t want to contribute can pay an extra £10 a year in tax instead to offset that revenue, Everybody is happy

| King Charles on 10:47 - Jun 27 with 6684 views | johann28 | Nothing against Charles or the Royal Family generally, but the finances need looking at. Among the most obvious injustices are the profits made from the king's property management company, which has made more than £1bn for the third consecutive year thanks to the boom in offshore windfarms paid for through energy bills. The so-called 'crown estate', the royals’ portfolio of land and property, reported £1.2bn in profit for the last financial year, almost three times the amount it made three years ago. Two-thirds came from the offshore wind industry. Wind developers paid £875m in option fees last year to secure areas of the seabed from the crown estate, which is considered the legal owner of the ocean floor around much of the country. And once new windfarms begin generating low-carbon electricity the developers will be required to pay the crown estate a portion of the revenue they collect from energy bills. The crown estate also plans to increase the annual pay packet of its chief executive, Dan Labbad, by almost 20%, the fourth consecutive hike. Labbad will take home almost £2.33m for the last financial year, up from almost £1.95m the year before, and more than four times the £517,000 he received in 2019 when he stepped into the role. | | | |

Burnham’s won quite a few more elections than the King, including one last week. But again, confusing the role of a ceremonial head of state with the PM. People should educate themselves on how our political system works before making asinine comments.
