I remember well the 82 world cup coming on with Trevor Brooking as our last hopes to qualify further and was a frustrating outcome in a world cup we didnt lose a game either.
My overriding memory is him slumped over an advertising hoarding at Anfield, as Stan Collymore scored a last minute winner in injury time for a 4 - 3 victory which almost condemned Newcastle to not winning the premier league that season and the "luv it" interview was around this time also.

Seemed to have a soft spot for QPR too - I don't know why but two quotes he made always stayed with me:
"Les Ferdinand was incredible and our back four just couldn't handle him. QPR fetched a fair few fans up here today and I think they enjoyed themselves" Match of the day after QPR won away at St James Park.
"Loftus Road is a unique stadium there were 18,000 fans here tonight but it sounded like 58,000" Post match report as manager of Manchester City after their win at Loftus Road.

I distinctly remember that second quote. It was preceded with "Great place to play a cup tie, this."
I was the last one waiting for his autograph on SA Road that night but he just got into the car that was waiting for him when it got to my turn. When he noticed he'd left one out he stopped the car and wound down the window to make sure I got mine too.

RIP Kevin. Great player. I wonder if his affection for the Rs was because he nearly joined us. Apparently Gordon Jago had agreed to sign him from Scunthorpe but Jim Gregory wouldn't agree to pay what they asked (£35,000). Keegan went to Liverpool later. Another tenuous link is Hamburg wanted Stan Bowles but Stan didn't fancy going to Germany so they bought Kevin instead who went on to win 2 Balon d'ors. | | | |

Remember seeing him for Liverpool at Loftus Rd. He took a bit of mild abuse. Oh Kevin Keegan, Kevin Keegan la, la, la,la,la for he's a wa*nker etc
Was brave and intelligent to leave Liverpool and go to SV Hamburg. Was on the losing side for SV against Forest in a European Cup Final.
Came back to the UK and for some strange reason chose Southampton.
Not quite as skilfull or tricky as the 'mavericks' but a brilliant hard working player

Met him once at Dublin Airport. He was on his way back from a race meeting where one of his horses was running. I asked him for an autograph and we chatted while waiting for the flight to be called. A modest and decent man. Also he was responsible for the unexpected popularity of the name "Kevin" in 1980s Germany. |  | | |

My friend Bob ran a business selling the autographs of former Liverpool players, mainly from the 60's, 70's and 80's. He usually went to the players homes to do signings or drove around collecting them to hold mini private reunions in a pub or someones home. He did several signings with Kevin.
At the end of one signing with Kevin they were saying their goodbyes and Kevin pointed to Bob's car and exclaimed ''Is that your car Bob!'' 'Unfortunately,'' replied Bob, it was an old rust bucket. He went on to tell Kevin that he had his eye on a cheap replacement and was saving the money for it. Without hesitation Kevin gave Bob enough money back to buy that car.
A hard working, talented player who was of course a great finisher.
