There is a very good article a couple of years old on The Athletic about the show. Gives you a good insight into how much work was put in to its production when Lovejoy was the boss. He worked his team very hard. When he left, he took all the writers with him and it was clearly never the same after that.
Having watched some old clips from the Andy Goldstein and Max Rusheden era, you can see how uncomfortable they both were going through the motions, especially the Soccerette sketches which they both hated doing. It did become a shadow of its self very quickly and the guests went from some of the biggest music acts around to a weekly appearance of that fat waster Neil Ruddock in his vest. I liked it briefly when I first discovered it, maybe twenty years ago, but the comedy in it quickly became self-referential and smug. It never moved on from the few good jokes that it had and was extremely jaded long before the Watford/Chelsea fan left. |  |

My favourite Soccer AM story is that it caused the split of beloved niche indie band Hope of The States
Frontman Sam Herlihy said in an interview:

A mate and myself appeared on Soccer AM back in 2003. Even though Helen Chamberlain had to shoot off quickly, she had plenty of pics taken with us all. As did the guests, Peter Beardsley & Bobby Zamora.
We went to the rugby club bar next door afterwards, and Lovejoy didn’t even want to acknowledge us and the others on the show that day. All the rest of the regulars on the show were brilliant. They’d all be talking and having a drink with you.

Used to think it was hilarious as a young un but did a particularly weird thing as a young fellow watching the show the day after Torquay lost in the play off final.
Hells bells vocabulary that day was monosyllabic and surly and me being an idiot trumped up little kid wrote an email to sky complaining about her lack of professionalism.
I was a total d*ck as a young chap. Numpty indeed.
Gotta say though think me and my sad other QPR mate both quite had a little bit of a sabre light shining for Young Helen !!!

can't believe its been running since 1995. thought it was pretty good to start with as something completely different and a bit of a fans perspective on footy and the Saturday ritual. Linking in with some pretty good musical references it was light hearted fun.
