That was a pen all day long. This thing that he put his leg in front of the defender is a joke. He was shielding the ball. He got in front of the defender and gets kneed in the back of his leg. Defender all over him. If he was running into the box, one on one with the keeper, and he defender done that tackle from behind he'd be sent off. |

That's been a penalty as long as there's been association football and hopefully will continue to be or the games finished. If you're tripped in the box from behind by a defender it's a pen. No other context needed. | | | |

This is why England are such a dangerous team ,when Kane is below par, Bellingham is playing a blinder then suddenly both will hit form and they could help England lift the WC.
Once again like a broken record Norway were unable to go up 2-0 on England thanks to a bizzare bit of indecision when Haaland was so open and the net gaping a massive let off.
Lots of ref decisions to discuss including a first ever bit of interference by a tv cable leading directly to an England goal plus the Haaland diuble push on Anderson leading to their go ahead goal chalked off .

Yeah it's an interesting discussion and you're right we'll never agree but I respect your opinion. Maybe there is a new rule I don't know about. If a new rule like that has been introduced then IMO that's crazy. And yes if that happened against England or QPR I'd have no issue whatsoever. A striker being denied a goalscoring opportunity by a defender from behind is a penalty no matter who you support. | | | |

I agree. It’s like when players put their leg back to tangle with the defenders legs. I don’t want to see them given. Now if our player had been slightly further forward then it would’ve been okay to put his leg across to shield the ball but for me it looked like he only put his leg across to get tripped up as he wasn’t far enough in front of the defender to shield the ball from him. |  | | |

To be fair, VAR did not overturn the referee's decision
It alerted the referee to review an incident which might be wrongly given at that moment in time.
The referee reviewed and decided not to give the penalty. There must be something clear that he saw to make him change his mind - perhaps a deliberate action of the attacker to bring his leg in front of the defender hence blocked him.
We can say for sure if it was given, it was a soft penalty and if wasn't, the attacker was hard done by. [Post edited 12 Jul 12:06]

Stuck his leg out completely altering his natural running movement. His gait had nothing to do with protecting the ball it was baby giraffe stuff. Looking for it all day long.
The FIFA referees go through so much classroom work with hours of footage of this stuff to help them make informed as much as possible decisions. Players buying fouls all day long in the Argentina game and even Sir Harry yesterday.
An extremely tough gig not helped by players trying to con referees all game. Anyone who’s played at any level on here knows that. Ball going out of play always both teams appealing a good example.
