Soton must have a10-20% sell on clause.

So need to be selling for 10m and making 5m ish profit?

And personally, I would be looking for a dedicated RB.

Go on then, what would it take?

£15m? with 20% sell on?

We need to sell after all...

That sounds about right. We apparently paid (undisclosed fee) about £4.5m so triple that in 17 games for a club with parachute money.
Edwards' family, including him(?), are QPR fans. Would he really want to relocate toEast Lancs.?

Burnley have parachute payments. We've got to be looking in the £15 - £20m bracket.

We paid £4.5m for him in Jan. Since then he has played for us 17 times and been OK, not outstanding. I get we would obvs quite like £15m but why is he suddenly worth more than three times what we paid for him in 6 months?

Doesn't matter if fans are or are not sold on it, it's the club's stated business plan: a player trading model.

So, this is it. The only players QPR have who anybody is going to buy for a significant increase on our outlay are those we find as fans hardest to countenance leaving: Kone, Edwards, maybe Madsen with a bit more evidence.

We have to start somewhere. Every summer for about a decade Brentford sold their very best, most essential players for a big increase, then reinvested. Their fans hated it. Eventually, they trusted them. Do we trust out recruitment yet?

Do we need and want some good midfielders who will improve us, maybe a proper right back? Might have to sell Edwards for 35% profit to get them, as we've a few starting CBs (if we get a RB).

Or do we think we'll make more in a year? Very risky. Seldom works like that at Rangers.

Absolutely. Varane. Willock. Chair. Even Austin way back. We’re terrible for him holding onto players past their best and past when someone showed interest at a good price.

If the club says it’s running a player training model, that means you seek to buy low, and sell high. If Burnley were to offer, say £9m-£10m you have to sell. It shouldn’t even be a debate. We double out money and can reinvest in a couple of positions whilst giving us more breathing room on PSR to potentially offer extensions which protect other assets.

We know we don’t have money to compete in the league, just like others before us, without selling players for decent money to add to the club’s income. This is how you do it.

The buying bit of player trading models is easy. Everyone likes spending money. The selling part is much harder.

Ouch !!

With Edwards obviously want him to stay the season, but if we get bids £12 million plus from a parachute payments club, I personally would accept this figure.

Its the minimum profit on transfer would wish for.

A successful season here and potentially could be valued then at £20 million.

My.main concern would be who would replace him.

If we sell for double, then this is a good business, and Edwards should be sold.

Edwards is a very good prospect, but I am not sure he's quite good enough in the air, and he's not a pacy CD. Sure, he's the cultured one who brings it out from the back; nice, we all like that.

For me, he's a decent CD in the Champ, but I am not sure he would make it in the Prem. Getting double bubble on him is worth the sale. From this, we could get a couple more Dunne types in on the cheap, seeing as we are not really suited to be playing out from the back.

After such a sale, it would be very hard for other clubs to lowball us on our expensive forwards (who always cost way more), as we would have the cash to hold out. Thus, it would help us get the most money for them, too.
In addition, we can hold out for max money for Varane (don't laugh at the back there) and so on.

We can rinse Burnley here, I say £10m min if not £15m.
Silly cash-rich Prem clubs for the taking!

Agreed.

I think it’s kind of pointless us all talking about fees, though: the club don’t tell us how much they get or receive, and the fees mentioned by social media accounts close to the club often turn out to be false once the accounts are released.

So, if he goes, we’ll be told it was great business by some, terrible business by others, and we'll have to wait and see, as ever.
At least for a while.

Agree with you in principle.

But you are overlooking the probability that Saints would have negotiated a hefty sell-on clause.

So rather than doubling our money on a £10m sale we might be looking at a £2-3m profit.

Not to be sneezed at, but also not enough for another wild spending spree.

But the bottom line is that you are right and that we have to take a clear profit if it is there to be made.

You are setting the bar incredibly high here.

Not many businesses where you almost quadruple the value of an asset in 18 months.

Holding on to players and hoping for some vast sum over the rainbow is - as Hunter pointed out - precisely where we went wrong before.

Obvs its a balance. No reason why we should be low-balled. But if you sell for 9m, say, and buy two more players they could also double in value.

Because we have generated so few selling assets, when we get one there is a slight tendency to expect the sale to be Eze big. But if we doubled the money on several players in 6 months we would be doing pretty nicely...

Exactly this. Edward’s is a fine player, who all things being equal should end up playing in the Prem and potentially playing for England (based on the current defenders that could happen sooner rather than later) But defenders are more replaceable than strikers, so if selling Edward’s for 10M meant we could hold onto Burrell and Kone for at least one more season then we should go for it, no debate. It would also allow us to invest in a proper cdm and maybe a Rb which would free up Mbengue to play CB again. And there is also JCS…
On a different note we need to offload a couple of wingers as we are top heavy there. My preferred releases would be Saito and Dembele. That still leaves us with Chair, Smyth, Vale and Poku. Maybe let Bennie (depending on Kolli’s situation) and deffo Lloyd out on loan

Not really.

I think currently his value could be between £6 million to £8 million maximum.

I was talking about a bid from a club blessed with parachute payments.

Would not sell for £8 million, as he could be crucial this season and a good season and to that type of club, he is worth double this. Check out yo yo club figures for players, they pay massively over the odds, because other clubs know the buyers have a lot more spending power.

To play devil's advocate, not sure Edwards the permanent signing often looked up to the standard of Edwards the loan...

Would leave us pretty fcked at centre back through, given Morrison and JCS have both gone full Karl Ready.

Wistful, misty eyed, stupid old fookah that I am.....

I remember zee old days before zee vor when clubs built a squad to challenge.
The owners cut their cloth.
Good football people ran the place, players were hungry to play for the club and they "gave it a reet good go"

Mad that the play offs are donw to 8th place this year.

But yeah, let's sell our captian and most promisiong young player we've had in ages for this mystical player trading model.

Couple of sunburned Aussies in to replace and we're sorted.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

So if you say yourself his value is £6-£8m, why would some club pay way more than that just because they are a parachute club? Always a mistake IMHO to think just because someone is rich, they will be easily parted with their money. Quite the opposite in my experience.

If you were to double your money in 6 months that unfortunately has to be filed under things we really should be doing.

Assuming Southampton have a decent sell on clause it would need to be at least £12 million (+ our own sell on clause) for us to double our money IMO, anything less wouldn’t be worth it.

Sell, but definitely not for less than 8 figures.

Spend on a starting right back and a starting mobile midfielder. Don’t actually need a cb replacement with JCS, Morrison, Mbengue (freed from rb duties), smith waiting in the wings.

Don't forget how much we will save in wages on the remaining (probable) three years of his contract.

We'll be quids in.

More seriously.

It's the chance to sell for a clear profit to a team that ought to be looking to bounce back to the PL, which should trigger a nice little add-on to any fee we got for him and could greatly increase his value for when Burnley came to sell him (bonus sell-on clause).

It's the sort of business we should be looking to do, even if it means parting with a crowd favourite.

Obviously the fee and the terms have to be right. But don't they always.

I just pity the poor lad trying to source some decent hair product in Burnley. Nay lad, bit o' lard on top were always good enough for Jimmy McIlroy an' it'll do for thee.

I don’t think there’s much argument against this beyond the old man shouting at the sky about the good old days routine.

However, in this specific scenario (unlike those listed) he’s a player desperately in need of stability and a home. Might be a rare case of the model and a player’s individual preferences not marrying up (insofar as I doubt (m)any other players in the squad would turn down a parachute team).

He’s just had a horrid time at one after making that move. Might not be our call this time

Should be fairly straightforward to get 15 million notes from them.

Take that, can then reinvest in 2/3 x 5 million pounds players and still be in profit as you just give them a 4/5 year deal and then you hope that two are a success and we sell those on.

If this interest is real we have to move him on.
Need to start learning our lessons

You might have a point.

But the entire Southampton squad was floundering last season until:

A) They changed Head Coach
B) Someone bought the intern a bus pass and a pair of binoculars
C) All of the above

I would keep Ronnie at least for this season unless of course he wants to go.
He is only 23 years old and we have time to sell at a later date.

As I see it we are trying to build a team to challenge, after many difficult seasons we now have not one but two goal scorers, the goalkeeper situation is looking very promising, full back positions are looking more secure and I believe Ronnie will get better and better.

We of course do need that elusive box to box midfielder, which might make all the difference to a promotion challenge.

If we sell Ronnie, would we be able to purchase a suitable replacement who could slot straight in, centre half is a key position.

Although if an obscene offer of 15 million was on the table I might just have to have a re think.
