Morgan has not looked out of place as a Championship midfielder in the last couple of games. Has he progressed enough to play him as the preferred CM partner with Madsen next season? Should he be played off the bench or loan him out for a full season to further his development?

Morgan is currently playing Madsen’s role. I don’t see the two playing together. It’s possible Morgan is being groomed to be Madsen’s back up.
Recently Morgan has been playing the deeper, ‘QB’, no. 6 role, like Madsen was, and Varane has been pushed on in more of a conventional “8” role (which I think has seen him to better effect, at least with the ball).
Personally, I think Field is the best we have in that roving 8 role, pressing, getting stuck in, etc. Cifuentes used him and Morgan in those roles ahead of Varane when we went on that great run over the winter last season. Some of his best performances (Leeds at home, Oxford away, West Brom at home) were when he had licence to get into the box and/or press high and wide). He’s the most athletic midfielder we have.
So I’d play Field and Madsen, with Madsen at 6 and Field at 8. Madsen spraying it and acting the the ‘QB’ and Field acting as the legs getting up and down, side to side, and you know he’ll get back in shape and track runners. Morgan could be either back up, really, but I actually think he’s showing a more natural application in recent games to be Morgan’s back up. Varane needs selling. No point having him as a back up, if we can get decent money for given his age and potential. Sign a replacement there from the Champ/League 1. Ideally someone with legs who is tidy on the ball. |  | | |

We cannot play both together as they are too similar. If Madsen plays agin before the end of the season it will be to get him in the shop window for him to be moved on over the summer window. If he doesn’t then I expect he will be with us at least until Christmas (depending on his form next season). If he goes during the summer than Morgan should be able to step into his place, if Madsen stays them Morgan may go out on loan for the first half of the season. Ideally Field should be the mid-field partner of whoever is the attacking midfielder, if not, then I guess Varane, but that does not inspire top six (or eight even) notions. We need to bring in another cdm regardless, some young player from L1 who is willing and eager to make the step up. | | | |

He progressed, great. I am not sure hes there yet. Hopefully, time will tell. Remember, he was sacrificed at RB for a few games and still scored.

You can definitely play Morgan and Madsen together as Madsen now does the horrible stuff like tackling. Morgan is also an upgrade on Varane, Hayden, and Field.
Hopefully, Varane and Field will be sold, but we desperately need an additional two CMs. If not, it'll be the same story as this season.
Also, anyone else notice that Varane has started playing well again with a few games to go? Just like last season. | |

For me Morgan's passing is still too wayward, dangerously so when he plays it carelessly sideways or backwards in our own third. Opppostion players seem to run through him or off his shoulder too easily. He could be used as back-up for Madsen, but unless Madsen is out injured a lot next season (hope not) or is sold this summer, a decent loan next season or until January would probably benefit Morgan and the Club more than him sitting on the Bench mostly with us. I prefer Varane, Field or Hayden playing alongside Madsen of the midfielders we have now. | | | |

Yes I must admit I thought it would be a catastrophe losing Madsen. But they’ve shown they can find a way to get some goals without him. I think we miss him defensively as he’s proved himself really good at snuffing out danger, cutting balls out and positioning himself well to stop passes into the box or players running through with the ball.
I think we also miss Burrell defensively as he is very good at pressing alongside Kone but also his devastating pace means teams couldn’t push up so high. I think that’s also part of the reason teams are getting through us a bit quicker.
But you can also really see the difference Ronnie makes too as he’s been brilliant at some last ditch defending which has countered some of these issues. Shout out to Mbengue yesterday for that magnificent tackle too.
Our passing recently has been much improved, particularly quick passes in a triangle. You can really notice when Stephan has had the team on the training pitch for a decent chunk of time. |  | | |

Sadly this season he’s been fairly shite and if that rumoured £5mill (yeah right) is on the table from anyone it should be taken.
Hayden is done and wasn’t a signing I would have made in any case.
I remain a huge fan of Sam Field and hope he can return but I think bridges may be burned there and any offer for him will be accepted.
So thinking about it we certainly need bodies in there.
I just don’t see the Virus and his team adding proven players, it’s not their style, and that will ultimately kill us.

In terms of comings and goings, central midfield is set to be the most interesting area during the summer transfer window. I can see Hayden and Field departing and the need for two new CMs. But what kind of CMs should be recruited?
For me, we should go for a first choice box to box no 8 to play alongside Madsen and a squad DCM player. Morgan covers Madsen and Varane covers the new no 8.
There are promising midfielders in the DS such as Alemayehu and Tuck but I don't think they're ready for the first team. |  | | |

This is the crux of the problem.
This box to box CM doesn’t exist in the Championship, they play in the Prem or if they don’t you’ve got at best a season to get something out of them before they go to the Prem. It’d be a miracle to get your hands on one.
I like Morgan, he should be a regular, but the PNE goal, where the fella covered half the pitch with no Rangers midfielder within 20 yards of him tells the story of why our very decent defence concedes so many goals.
Varane I have an issue with, as alluded to above, he’s a player who does his best work in dead rubbers. It’s all very well shining at Sunderland and PNE with the sun on your back and nothing for the oppo to play for but sideways and backwards is a hindrance when it matters.
We’ve got some good players but an obsession with a formation that exposes their weaknesses.
Can’t help think we’ll have to try three at the back at some point, get the best out of what we’ve got in front of them.
We’ve three good forwards, maybe four, all of which could interchange as a two man front line. Vale and Chair would be key to this and would allow us to have a three man CM that is adjustable against varied opposition. Chances are Hayden and Field will move on so it’s still essential we get one maybe two new CM’s in. I’d have the likes of Poku, Dembele on the bench to fill in if Chair or Vale unavailable and in a 3-5-2 they’re relative frailty will be less of a liability with three playing CM. |  | | |

Don't understand why coaches get stuck on a formation. JS obviously prefers 442 but surely they can cope with switch to 433 depending on the availability of central midfield / opposition etc. MW got stuck on 352 after he was forced to switch. [Post edited 7 Apr 8:45]

We need more quality in the midfield - with good options. It definitely doesn’t feel like we have the right type of players in the middle yet.
I’m afraid Hayden and Varane aren’t that in this set-up and Varane feels too expensive as an ‘option’ player and makes some glaring mistakes alongside his preference for a go-to back pass. Morgan has improved a little this season, which is good to see but he’s not there yet and is more like our ‘option’ player. Madsen works but we need someone of quality beside him who can both create and defend. Depends what the budget is I guess. |  | | |

Putting Morgan on the bench next season would be hindering his development. You either loan him out or bite the bullet and commit to him being part of our starting 11. The latter two options are more l8kely to increase his resale value. | |

That's a fair point but I think loaning Morgan out would necessitate another incoming transfer. That maybe possible or Field might be retained to help facilitate a Morgan loan out, but sooner or later he's going to have to compete for a starting spot. | | | |
