"Earlier this year, Ifab decided against changing the law and invited leagues to volunteer for trials.
Pro Ref, led by chief refereeing officer Howard Webb, has been in discussions with the leagues to determine how to tackle the issue. It settled on a team having to remove an outfield player from the field.
If a referee signals that the physio can come on to treat a goalkeeper, the coach will have 10 seconds to nominate another player to leave the pitch for one minute, telling the fourth official of their choice.
If no player has been selected within 10 seconds, the captain must leave the field.
If clearance is received by the Ifab in time, the first game to feature the trial will be the Carabao Cup preliminary round tie between Tranmere and Rochdale on Saturday, 1 August."

I get the idea of what they are trying to achieve but they seem to be going about it in a strange way.
Based on that BBC article it says there are a number of exceptions where the rule doesn't apply but the rule doesn't distinguish between genuine injuries or timewasting.
It seems logical to me that a team that is losing has no incentive to waste time but that doesn't make their goalkeeper immune from injury.
What happens if you're trailing with five minutes to go and your goalkeeper tweaks their hamstring trying to launch the ball up the pitch? Is it fair that you have to go down to ten men?
I get that this is only a trial but you don't normally try out rule changes in one of the biggest leagues in the world.
I like it in principle but they should really iron out all the flaws before using it at our level or the PL. [Post edited 27 Jul 17:18]

This was the big summer idea a few years ago. We're actually going to add on the time we should, rather than the current farce of 2/3 at the end of the first half and 4-6 at the end of the second regardless of what's happened (Gavin Ward).
First few rounds of the season we had 10s, 11s, 12s going up - I remember an excruciating quarter hour at Cardiff under Gareth Ainsworth when we were desperate for a win - and then, as usual, everyone got bored of it and abandoned it after the first international break. | | | |

Why not just bring in all of the in-play changes they made for the World Cup? The time wasting, ‘injuries’ and tactical goalkeeper collapses were reduced to next to nothing and made watching games far better.

Use the two assistant refs to ensure that all the remaining players stay in the centre circle away from the manager and coaching staff and it would take away the main reason for a keeper to collapse to the floor. |  | | |

Was chatting about the general timewasting especially that otherwise known as sh*thousery. Its so blatant and so widespread, and yet it ruins many games and its basically when you get down to basics, just downright cheating.
The rules clearly currently do nothing to stop it at all.
I appreciate referees have to stop the game if someone goes down with a suspected head injury but when players writhe around on the floor like they have been shot in both legs. Get treated for five minutes and then immediately sprint off as if they never were injured in the first place.
I hate this. And all teams do it. We do it also when we are trying to hold onto a lead.
My solurion with regards to this. If suddenly.after treatement the player sprints off and goes in full on 100% committed challenges as if they never had an injury in the first place, any offical could say this player deliberately feigned injury and could be liable to a retrospective yellow card. Whether this is done in games or by a panel after the game.
I would say the prospect of being booked would lessen the chances of consistent writhing around in excrutiating pain and a minute later completing the 100 metre sprint in 9.75 seconds.
Its so irritating in games. Hate it myself.
There are very few sports where blatant cheating is so common place and in football, it is allowed to carry on unchecked.
The third place playoff with England playing France was a game where this kind of cheating was not in existence at all. ie non competitive match and the skill levels and talent on show for that game was outstanding from both teams.
Would much rather watch people showcasing their skills as opposed to parading all the snide and cynical ways of cheating the officials.

It should have been as simple as:
Goalkeeper goes down ''injured''.
A corner is awarded to the other team.
No outfield player is to go over to the touchline. If they do they have to leave the pitch for 5 mins.
This new rule doesn't say anything about players going to the touch line to get instructions. |  |

Or, how about the other side chooses which outfield player goes off?
In relation to outfield players, I still don't see why treatment isn't administered while play continues, as in rugby. If its serious then stop the game and I think we know when it is and when it isnt!

I think it's a really good change. It's not rocket science, it doesn't solve all the games problems and it's easy to knit pick it.
However, it's a positive step and should close a big door that is too frequently opened to spoil tactics, that are ruining the game as a spectacle. | | | |

All players have to go straight to the centre circle the minute the ref lets the physio on to "treat" the keeper. The manager of the side whose keeper is receiving "treatment" has to go on all fours and is force fed serving spoons of dog shit until the game restarts. Two weeks of Alex Neil and Scott Parker being fed dog shit and we might see an end to the strange new phenomena of keepers getting cramp whenever their teams are under the cosh.
