Has any club ever been demoted mid season?

I mean, how would you make that work?

Would they bring their current points tally down with them, or would they forfeit all the games they should have played up to this point?

Relegation mid season would be totally unworkable.

The players will all have individual sponsorship deals signed on the assumption they will be in the PL and competing for all the big trophies. How would you square that off? I don't think you can.

The only way I think you could make it work is to kick them out of the league for the rest of the season and force them to start again further down the pyramid when next season starts. But legally that's a whole new can of worms, and again the players impacted would be getting lawyered up with the PFA backing them all the way.

Demoted mid-season? Not that I know of, but Peterborough were relegated from Division Three in the 1967/68 season for financial irregularities, with the decision being made part way through the season.

Funnily enough, Manchester United were found guilty of the same offence & received a fine rather than relegation.

Bizarre situation in that City are ;

100/30 for relegation
3/1 to win the title

Very odd.

according to AI:
The most severe punishments Manchester City could receive include expulsion (expulsion/removal) from the Premier League, relegation down the English football pyramid, and the stripping of previously won domestic titles.

Potential Severe Sanctions Expulsion or Relegation: The independent commission has the authority to expel the club from the Premier League entirely, which could mean dropping down to the lower tiers of English football (such as League Two or the National League).

Massive Points Deduction: With guilty verdicts spanning 114 of the charges, analysts suggest an astronomical points deduction (potentially 40 to 60+ points), which would instantly trigger relegation.

Stripping of Titles: The club could potentially be stripped of historical domestic honors (Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles) won during the seasons in question.

Financial Penalties and Restrictions: Record-level financial fines alongside long-term transfer bans are also within the scope of permitted punishments.

The sanctions process remains ongoing and Manchester City are expected to vigorously appeal the independent commission's verdict, meaning a final conclusion will take more time

Aussie swimmer Lisa Curry came second to an obviously drugged up East German in the 1980 Olympics. Years later the German tried to apologise and wanted to give Curry the gold medal she should have won. Lisa told her that she had stolen what would have been one of the greatest moments in her life with her cheating and that she could shove her stolen medal up her arse.

No doubt how a lot of cheated managers and players are feeling this morning.

On the stripping of titles thing;

Completely agree that it will mean nothing to the fans of clubs who get them awarded, and that equally it won't take away the life experience for City fans of the winning moment.

Still.

There are things like record books and trophy cabinets; International sides have stars on shirts for title wins. I think it's right that those things get removed if you're caught cheating. God knows I long ago got sick of scousers banging on about how many titles they won, but (gritted teeth) they did actually win the buggers.

Ya, but did they Cider?

Cheating has been endemic in English football throughout my fifty-six years.

In the 80's and 90's, we were denied fair justice by match officials when playing Liverpool and Man Utd on far too many occasions for it to be coincidental.

We weren't allowed play in Europe in 67-68, even though we'd earned it.
Liverpool's schedule for the last month before their Wolves games in 1976 defies belief, but not for the reason people might think.

Did Liverpool earn all of those titles fairly?
Did Man Utd?

And FFP, as we all know in W12, is a tool designed to keep the smallies in their place.

Think the decision made here, is absolutely crucial for the future of the game in this country...

Quite clearly, City should be punished, big time. A fine and a short transfer embargo would be an insult to all teams that compete in this country. Should at the very least be a punishment that at best confines City to Championship football next season and also a massive points deduction that they start with that season with also.

Anything else is an insult to those such as ourselves, who have been made an example of previously, and also a kind penalty would smell of big boys corruption, which again sends an awful message to all other law abiding clubs !!

Thinking hard on this one, Brian.
If there was wholesale cheating, surely someone would have written a book by now.
Maybe it was a bit more insidious then that, like where the referee trained in the week before the fa Cup final.
But let's face it, we're the team who got drugged by our own fecking manager......

The sixties were a lively time for football scandals. More on that here:

https://unexpecteddelirium.sub

In Peterborough's case they were relegated at the end of the season:

"In November 1967, the Football Association and Football League met to consider charges of making illegal payments to players, poor accounting practices and poor internal governance at Third Division Peterborough United, who’d only been members of the League since 1960 after having replaced Gateshead, stemming from claims surrounding an FA Cup match against Sunderland the previous January. Peterborough were demoted into the Fourth Division at the end of the 1967/68 season. They would have finished 6th otherwise."

None of this "negotiated punishments" nonsense in them days!

If the EFL have any sense (no sniggering at the back), they will welcome them with open arms, and plonk them in league two. Then have a minimum of three years of increased attention, attendances, tv rights etc. would also add to the hilarity.

What I find insane is that the Glazers can buy Man Utd and immediately dump them into £1bn of debt. The city owners wanted to give money to City but aren’t allowed to, hence they ‘cheat’ instead. FFP is a farce.

Seems like they can’t banish them to the EFL as it’s a separate body, and they’re not going to throw them out altogether.

Given our £42m fine has essentially hobbled and condemned us to 10 years of bottom half of the Championship, perhaps something that eats away at them in a similar slow fashion should be carried out. Total up how many seasons indiscretions and give them a 12 point deduction for that many seasons going forward.

Will stop them winning the title and over time, top players won’t want to go there.

But North Battersea have somehow managed to get away with cheating. The £10million fine for the bribe to Eden Hazard’s agent to ensure he signed for them as opposed to ManUre for £29million and then they eventually sell him for around £120million is so laughable it makes you think that the PL itself is bent. To allow them the sale of their women’s team to themselves for £200million when that team owns no infrastructure or other assets and no doubt held a load of debts considering the level of support they receive being akin to an average supported league two club, could you ever imagine a team like Barnet being sold for the same sum? And then the sale of the hotels? Again to a company in their own umbrella of companies! The lack of proper sanctions against them has been an utter fraud in itself.

FFP is a farce. But in this case it's also the crux of the matter.

FFP was introduced specifically to restrict Citeh’s lavish spending and to stop anyone else with massive pots of money and a dodgy reputation that needs washing from copying them.

This is the PL’s chance to really hammer that message home.

That's why I don't think City will get off lightly.

"...our £42m fine has essentially hobbled and condemned us to 10 years of bottom half of the Championship..."

The owners paid the fine by writing off £22m worth of outstanding debts owed by the club to them, and paying £17m over ten seasons plus the EFL’s legal costs of £3m. Apart from being under a transfer embargo during the January 2019 window, I can't see how that fine condemned us to 10 years in the bottom half.

When Glasgow Rangers were expelled from the SPL in 2012 the SPL was at that time a separate body from the Scottish Football League (they subsequently merged in 2013).

The SFL clubs voted on whether to accept Rangers into the SFL.

They accepted them because losing Rangers would be a 'financial catastrophe' for the Scottish game:

https://www.foxsports.com.au/f

The EFL would probably have a similar vote if Citeh were ejected from the PL. But given the amount of leverage the PL has over the EFL I can't see too many clubs objecting if that's what the PL really wants.

I'm not saying that's what will happen. I'm just saying the PL has the power to force it through if they really want to.
