We were well beaten in the 2nd half although I was confused by the ref's performance. In the 1st half he mostly ignored players going down under minimal contact and let the game flow. 2nd half, every tiny bit of contact on Southampton was a free kick which helped them build a lot of momentum.

Wonder if he thought he should have allowed their goal right on half time and tried to make up for it.

First half we were generally decent

Poku and Vale were not at their best and sad for Alfie. An inevitable injury and annoying to concede at the death too, but it was a four - one result in terms of their ability to open us up.

I bet on Coventry to win the league last season before the start and managed to get 16 to 1 on Saints this season, and tbf I think its between them and Boro this season.

Our losses are home to Boro, which could have been different and away at Birmingham and Saints.

I dont feel its time to be despondent today. They are just too good for us and the most encouraging thing was a fantastic finish from Kone.

Burnley and Lincoln at home - really need six points from these two games and then we can see where we get to.

I would say it was our worst defensive display this season but perhaps that was more to do with the quality of the opposition.

We move on and hope Alfie's injury is not as feared.

Seven on the spin now against them, really starting to despise Southampton. If we don't win another game until we play them again I really hope we win against them at LR and not just beat them but batter them Swansea style.

Poll: How many more points will we get this season?

Am wondering if Kamara is a bit of a barometer for us - he seemed very quiet that second half

Thought Poku was really good, first half especially - wouldn't have taken him off unless it was for the ubiquitous 'loading' reasons, and with him I can accept that.

Koki still a shadow of himself - nearly there but not quite most of the time. Good when he's on the ball in that one specific area but otherwise bypassed. Dembele similar - needs to stick with an opposition attacker beyond the first phase.

I thought 4-1 flattered them if you take the game as a whole, but having JCS at CB and Ronnie in the middle would have made even more sense by the end.

Not the end of the world.

Played 6 of the top 8 and 7 of the bottom 15, so 8 of the next 10 should be teams we can compete with. Half way we’ll have a better idea.

We know it’s 6th to 8th we are chasing, heads down and make that the aim.

Six months to get a little bit better, knock out tournament then anything might happen.

I think we were a bit heady there following Swansea. Wrong formation for this game, way too open played to their strengths, and just like Birmingham lost the midfield. Smythy ineffective upfront, Kamara not having a great game either. Serious questions about set piece defending I think maybe Kone at fault a couple of times. I like Harvey Vale but he is having a poor season and threw in another 4/10 performance here . Adamson has had a great spell, but really struggled today.

Another day they could have scored 6. B

adly missing Madsen for these away games at the decent teams because he gives us a bit of control.

Agreed.

Many of us were questioning playing Vale/ Poku before the match but in fairness, what were the options?

We didn't have a single experienced centre midfielder on the bench.

With JCS presumably not 100% we couldn't play Ronnie in midfield.

But Vale and Poku did frustrate me. Wafting about when surely they could see how under the cosh we were.

As you say on Adamson, been great, but he was destroyed down his wing and too often was just ambling back after being caught up field. Even Boy Kember who has been brilliant was made to look pretty basic at times.

Not sure Stephan got into the team how hard they would have to graft to even keep the score respectable, let alone get anything.

He looked weak but being so open albeit excellent at times with the ball first half was a big ask of him. Not helped by the absolute donkey alongside him. Remarkable how poor Varane was. He’s had terrible games but that second half he would have shamed a Sunday league team.

Fancied us at 1-0 but once we didn’t score by half time always expected them to be better. Not that it excuses that second half but the first I thought was more than good. Two deflected goals, one awful bit of marking and couldn’t finish.

Agree with this. I was probably a touch optimistic saying we were the better side, but we were definitely in it in the first half and dominated long stretches. Second half we got overrun in midfield, but still don't feel much shame about this one. The 3rd goal was a gift, though, and I bet Bould is fuming.

Top team Southampton but 4-1 flatters them. They still needed a couple of deflections and some poor defending to win the game.

Another sluggish second half start. Our normally reliable defence were all over the place at times in the second half. I can't get the image of Adamson, barely jogging out to Manning, for the second out of my mind.

baz_qpr_ and my mate Colin are correct in saying that Kone lost his man for the third, barely in the same postcode by the time the ball hits the back of the net.

How lucky are we to have Andy Sinton on co comms? His reading of the game and fair assessment. As he says if you finish above Southampton then you are going up. Take some positives from our first half performance and move on to the two important home games next week.

Certainly a discussion to be had on Julien's substitutions, both the timing and personnel, but on days like this it's all feels like semantics.

To quote Boston, roll on Tuesday.

Sensible measured reaction. Only saw the first half and thought we looked decent. Southampton are a cut above most in this league and should finish top two. Two winnable home games coming up, then international break and hopefully Madsen and Burrell back. Shame to hear that Varane wasn't great today. This is his opportunity to prove he's got what it takes

Is it just bias, or are we not the most inconsistent team in the football league? There isn't a single game I go into knowing what is going to happen. It always ranges from we could lose 0-3 to we could win 3-0 or anything in between. It does make things interesting, but also very stressful

Yes it's getting beyond a joke. I can only recall Liverpool beating us 7 in a row and they were bloody good. An aggregate score of 9-1 in two visits this year. Not so long ago Saints were losing 9-0 at home to Leicester. Once again it was men against boys.

Our last four games have all been one sided, 4-1 and 5-0 wins at home at home and 0-3 and 1-4 defeats away. It makes it look like there are two divisions within one league rather like the Premiership. It wouldn't have looked so bad if we hadn't conceded stoppage time goals today and at Birmingham as two goal defeats would have been better reflections of both games.

Whilst it might be true Southampton look a cut above, in their previous two home games they only beat Portsmouth 1-0 and drew 0-0 with Bolton. In comparison we were hopeless in defence and I thought we might have made it more difficult for them to score. I am scratching my head how Bolton could prevent them scoring and then concede 8 goals in their following two home games.

I really hope we can bounce back and beat Burnley who have stuffed us 8-0 on previous visits as we owe them but now we have lost another striker. These injuries will be our downfall I fear.

Thought first-half we were well in it but just gave the ball away with sloppy passes too often. I don't like getting on players backs but why Vale was the worst offender. Why ge only has 1 decent game in every 10 is frustrating.

Happy that Kone got another goal, a good one too and excellent to see Chair back. The sooner he can do 90 instead of Vale the better.

I don’t think we were bad although they were better. They made it hard to play our game because they kept passing between our lines which made us nervy about pushing up too much. We really needed a bit more dynamism in midfield as we weren’t really asking them enough questions that they had to drop back.

Their passing is very slick and our defence struggled to contain them round our penalty area. Only against Birmingham did we struggle so much. But with Madsen and Burrell we would’ve posed a bit more threat so they wouldn’t push up so much. But only Birmingham and Southampton so far have really made us look ordinary and they’re going to be pushing for automatic places I’m guessing.

Not turning up for the last two away games is a worry but I still think we can get two wins this week. Not hugely surprised by the inconsistency when you are starting the likes of Vale against good teams away from home. Just a complete void.

On our best day, with our best XI, we may have given them a game. That 2nd half was a clear indication of the gulf in class between the sides.

We were also handicapped by that fcking abomination of a kit.....

State of it.

Day out ranking 5.5. 1 point lost for that away kit.... bastrd thing.

They were quicker than us or as quick in every position is the way I saw it. There wasn't a lot between the two sides apart from that but I think it made a big difference today. Not sure we had anyone to compare with their number 10 but I thought Kone played well in his own way.

I was mostly encouraged by the first half and commend Stephan's bravery for going after them the way we did, it made for an open game which meant we were dicing with danger as Southampton are great in transition, but felt we managed to find spaces and at times play through and around the best team in the League. We got in and around their penalty area enough times but fell short with the final actions which has happened a lot this season in pivotal moments of games. Defensively I don't think our press was quite right and I think they targeted Adamson as a weak link as they often had overloads down his side that we didn't deal with. We've Defended our Box pretty well this season but they managed to score from an untracked 1, 2 and perhaps a bit of luck that Varane's block fell straight to their Goalscorer. At HT the feeling was frustration that we hadn't scored rather than we played badly.

I think the game was won/lost by both Manager's from HT onwards in that Eckert's tactical tweaks completely stopped us from playing, and Stephan failed to react to those in game. I agree with his post match comments that we were technically poor which contributed massively but I don't think he helped the players much when they were clearly devoid of ideas of how to get out and nullify Southampton's threat. We were outcoached and outclassed but annoyingly their 2nd and 3rd Goals were still preventable, Edward's could have left the ball in the air or headed back to Charles, and it looked like Charles would have collected the shot had Dunne not deflected it in. Kone's "marking" for the 3rd is completely unacceptable, no idea what he was thinking there. The fourth Goal hurt as it changes the optics of the performance slightly, but it's not good enough to only play for 45mins against a side of that quality and don't think we deserved anything based on that.

Individually Vale was really ineffective, I'm still a fan of his but he needs to start having a look at himself, Adamson struggled against the quality of opposition that he was clearly targeted by and showed he's still got a lot of improving to do. Kone was terrible and despite scoring he still hasn't sharpened up on the basics, he turned over possession so much when we really needed him to make it stick and help us get up the pitch, he still doesn't look like he can move, left Smyth isolated in the press, got passed around to easily and generally swallowed up by the big pitch and spaces today. Think Stephan really needs to consider if he's the right starting option in Away games.

My last word is again on substitutions, players returning from injury immediately breaking down and finishing another game with 10 men. We know of Ben Williams and his team’s incompetence, but is Stephan now being a bit naive in bringing these players on when they've only been back in training a few days? I'm sure he wants to trust the advice he's being given but there's enough evidence for him to be sceptical about what he's being told now. I also think Kolli and Alemayehu should have come on for Smyth and Kone as we needed more control and goalscoring threat in that area that Lloyd just doesn't bring. Chair coming on for 3 minutes was completely pointless even if it was to rest Kamara.

The Players have got to hurt but dust themselves down quickly and use that to bounce back with big performances at Home next week.

You’re right about the pace, but didn’t you think their passing was pretty slick and their dead balls were hugely better especially corners? Madsen’s corners would’ve been better plus shown more dynamism in midfield and Burrell would’ve provided more pace and guile so we missed both of them.

Varane put in one of the worst performances I've seen since Joey Barton's at Burnley in 2015 ISH

Special mention for Vale & Poku who were again dreadful and now can't be trusted away from home

Southampton probably the best team in the league but we gifted them a couple of goals

Two winnable games coming up

Every Senior outfield player on the bench bar Cirkin and maybe Saito was returning from Injury. None of them had 45mins in them as was proved by more injuries.

We had 1 defender reserve (after Cirkin was used, edit)in Clark Salter and no option at all for RB

Only chance we had was to hit them early and we were too wasteful.

Fitness is as always the problem here. Not the manager
