Watch Varane throughout the passage of play for their second goal.

Yeah, him and Vale were poor.
Poku was not much better.

Varane looks so tired in that match and you can see he's struggling.

JS will make changes, he always does when this happens. Cirkin maybe back in, along with Edwards in the middle and JCS at the back again. Kamara looked tired as well.

Really it should not be this way as they have had a week off.

Today was the day where I realised Varane will never be good enough. He’s so ponderous on the ball. Needs far far too many touches.

And Vale. Just cannot workout what his position is or what he’s meant to do.

The thing that annoys me most is we do all the hard approach play nicely and are then just so casual about throwing away chance after chance in the final third.

Didn't see the whole game so can't comment fully but in those highlights Varane did look pretty leggy. Don't know if he's not fully fit or if his heart's just not in it. You've got to be 100% committed. Even a touch of that and you'll get found out. Jimmy looked furious with a couple of those goals where people didn't track runners adequately. You've got to do the basics properly or you'll get beat.

Varane very good defensively but nowhere near good enough on the ball in this new look side who are all comfortable on the ball. And it showed today massively. Far too many safe sideqyaa and mostly backwards passes, even under no presssure. Just slows things down. Look and play forward. But he can’t do it.

Not convinced he's very good defensively. Gets caught in possession a little too easily and not always aware of runners around him Starting to think he's maybe not suited to the English game. Hopefully a European team will see enough promise for us a make a small profit and find someone with the right skillset for the championship.

One of varanne biggest weaknesses is his defensive work , switch’s off way to easily
Southampton ha s it easy today play the ball the the number 10 who p,aged just in front of the back four he dropped five yards in across of space and we didn’t once do anything. About it , shame Edwards wasn’t in the middle today as I don’t thin, he would have been given the space he was allowed , vale was vale poku is easy to read gets the the ball can’t cross the ball so has to cut inside by that time manning had got back and made an easy challenge and repeat , the fashion of wingers playing on the wrong side to allow them to come is due boils my pi%% if you have aright footed winger playing on the him on the right leg him get to the touch line and cross the fecking ball , or. At least try swapping them around a bit during the game , midfield killed us today , varanne vale kamarea got schooled in the middle with easy ba§lls past them for 90 mins

One issue I did notice we wasn’t allowing charles to get pretty easy balls in the box , not sure if he’s not that vocal but few times easy collection for charles we’re half cleared etc by Edwards mainly and dunne a few times , didn’t help things at the ba§ckthats for sure

Yes and..

Whilst I agree that he does switch off occasionally and he perhaps has too many touches I dont think varane was bad today and made a number of vital interceptions.

As great as he has been I think Kamara is getting a free pass here and had a poor game by his standards but ultimately neither was helped by the set up, Smyth had little impact going forward and second half was a passenger we desperately needed yo be 3 in midfield and we got done time and time again over committing in midfield. For me that one is on the manager, I think when he watches that back he will see he got it wrong in the set up, and against a team as good as Southampton on a larger pitch that left us very exposed

Agree with that. I thought Varane was ok today, switched off once, but recovered in time. Kamara tired I think 2nd half. He failed to take a couple of chances to shoot from the edge of the area electing to pass to players in more difficult positions than he was in himself. Poku and Vale also getting a lot of flack but we were better with them than their replacements. I agree Stephan got it wrong today, we needed an extra man in the midfield, the 4 4 2 didn't work. Edwards in a 3 in the midfield with another CB, instead of Smyth as an extra striker for this difficult away game would have been better, and as we used in difficult away games earlier this season and did very well.We missed a fit Madsen though and also JCS if as I suspect he wasn't fully ready for today.

Varane i thought was reasonable today, especially first half. Kamara was poor today though.

It shows in the against the best teams we need Madsen.

Madsen and Burrell and we do better. Hope they both return after the international break.

We need at least four points from the two home games, hopefully six and these two come back and we go again.

Southampton are probably the best team in the league but i dont think they got punished enough for cheating. Their manager should have got a six month ban for me, so hope somehow they f**k it up. Really dont like them.

At the start of the season, I picked Poku to be my stand out player.

Yesterday he showed glimpses of why my choice has some merit, but more as to why he won't be! He's got the skills, but he really can be the most infuriating individual at times. Yesterday: hesitancy mixed with poor choices and execution let him down and will continue to do so until he gets a bit of gravel in his belly and belief in his head.

The third goal with 13 unmarked at the far post was a replica of an instance in the first half. (You guys watching on the stream probably noticed this, at the ground it wasn’t obvious.)

Southampton played well but QPR failing to pick him up once was not good, but to do it twice is unacceptable.

Yes Tyler and Andy on the stream pointed this out. They were pealing back to the far post and we failed to pick this up several times. It’s another issue I’m guessing with injuries because they maybe aren’t so drilled into what their jobs are defensively.

But the delivery was something special nearly every time. That’s something we need to improve on. Vale should be doing better with that. He’s got the skill as I’ve seen him do it but yesterday was poor. I don’t think Southampton hit the first defender once yesterday with free kicks or corners but we regularly do it.

Manning’s delivery from corners compared to Vale’s was like chalk and cheese.

Annoying little scrote that he is, Manning is actually quite good.

We lost midfield while missing our best midfielder.
That could have been compensated for by playing Edwards in there, but we're also missing our best left sided centre back.
We finished the game with ten men, again (fourth time in five games), conceding another goal in the process because another player has came back from an injury and immediately suffered another one.

How long are we as a club going to tolerate this BS?

Agree we lost midfield but I was just saying was Varane any worse than Kamara.

Stephan’s hands were tied with selection but have to admit that I did want us to go there and give it a go. So, Edwards at the back and 2 in central midfield. Even with Madsen in there, we’re not good enough away from home to compete with the top 3 sides in this league. We have to go with the solid base of JCS, Dunne, then Edwards, Madsen and Kamara (or Varane in for 1 of them).

I guess Stephan could have gone with Dunne and Morrison, then moved Edwards into the middle with Varane and Kamara.

I think Southampton are very good, best team we've played. You do sometimes have to hold your hands up to that.

But I'd have fancied us to be more competitive with our best team out there. The fact it never is is the big issue at the club right now.

There were 3 such incidents. All 3 times it was Kone. First was a let off, subsequent corner Kone was wise to it and moved into that space as the defender made the move, and cleared. For the goal Kone was watching the sunset for the identical move. He was the same tallest player on the pitch, but peeled off around the back and maybe us wanting to keep out CH’s in the middle leaves us open to such moves. It’s a clever move. The left foot delivery is usually spot on, CH’s distracted in the middle, giant on the back post has a good chance of getting on it regardless of being marked, or not. Especially, as he’s likely not up against a CH because of his positioning. No challenge and he can probably close his eyes before heading it.

Separately, Varane was our best player in the first half. Every ball through the lines came from him, as well as the one to Dembele for Kones blocked shot just after our goal. He did follow that up by kicking it out of play a minute later, and for some reason thought the ball was going out for the 2nd goal - BUT it wouldn’t have changed things. Adamson did exactly the same and was so slow to attempt to get out to the wide man. I find Varane frustrating at times, but not because he’s a poor player, but because he will have a brain fart at some point to erase the memory of all the positive things he’s done. His partner in the middle is who folk should be scrutinising, but I’ll leave that to them as some players have off days. To me he looked leggy from the start and the first time I heard his name in the 2nd half was on the 73rd minute. Could be feeling the pace of the league following (I presume) a season playing little first team football. Or, who knows maybe he has a heavy cold. I would have helped him by switching for JCS, but maybe he’s on the bench for an emergency, rather than risking him for a tactical change. All in, we played well in the first half against a decent side who will create lots of chances in every game they play. Just didn’t come out for the 2nd half, but we move on. A point from each of the past 3 is no bad outcome from this tricky period.

If Varane could accept he’s down the pecking order at a probably mid-table second division club as he enters what should be his peak seasons he might get somewhere. He’s wanted a move from about five minutes after he arrived and in the position you can phone it in least of all just can’t be bothered more often than not (as I see it, perhaps he’s just unfit, crap or whatever). Barcelona aren’t picking up the phone. Put some graft in.

I posted this early in the week that both Manning and Ward Prowse are lethal from corners and JS mentioned it in his post match also his players just fell asleep .
At 1-0 we are well in the game like JS also mentioned and he was demanding a quick start yet we completly imploded to let the game slide away .
Even at 3-1 it never looked like we could get closer and worry them thats the bigger issue IMO.
Last point but for 3 seasons now our corners are horrible and yesterday as usual Vale's attempt led directlty to a full pitch counter attack which eventually got them that disallowed goal which I thought was harsh on them with VAR.
Southampton look like scoring at every corner we look likr conceeding from our corners

I had an interesting experience watching the game in Hospitality through work. We were the sole table of QPR fans, 6 of us. TBF the saints fans were pretty accommodating and it was a decent experience.

Varane is a player I’ve never fully understood, and never got the love and clamour for. His reduced minutes is an indication that the base level of quality in the squad has improved. If they could ever bloody stay fit. And if they did ever stay fit, I doubt he’d play at all.

Yesterday I thought he was poor. He always seems to play at 0.75 speed when the game is set to 1.00.
