Well done to Beth Mead on winning the sports personality of the year award tonight. The women’s team won team of the year and the manager won coach of the year too.
It was one of the best days of mine and my daughter’s lives to see them lift the trophy in July, and one we’ll never forget.

Great achievement and the coach and players did well to go all the way. I would have liked the men's T20 cricket team to have won something. They smashed that Cup, beating India and Pakistan in the semi and final was a superb effort.

I would love to have been there for that final. Fantastic stuff and made me feel quite emotional.

T20 probably too recent to be factored in.

Would have given it to Ben Stokes myself and for t20 and test team would have given team award to England cricket team.

Fair enough but in all reality pc choice perhaps

Don't agree.

The cricket team have done superbly of late but which of the two events brought more joy to the public? Absolutely the Lionesses for me. Cricket is still quite a minority sport int he UK, hence no ground bigger than 30k capacity in the country whereas Australia has the MCG that holds 100k and several other larger grounds than Lords.

I love what the England men's cricket teams have done in Test and T20 but I don't think anyone can argue that the big breakthrough moment in British sport this year was the women winning the football World Cup. It brought in a whole new audience for the women game and it was front page news in the way that cricket just isn't, much as I wish it was. And this is a Personality of the Year award, personally I'd have given the individual award to Chloe Kelly for her goal celebration.

Don't think that can be dismissed as "PC", in fact I think you'd have to have some sort of superiority complex about men's sport to fail to see what a big deal it was.

Cricket no way a minority sport.T20 games at county level some all sold out months before and big TV audience.

Third biggest after football and rugby union.

My view tainted perhaps by what interests me.

Winning t20 world cup in spectacular style and the new extremely bold approach to cricket so only two test victories ever in Pakistan to winning 3 nil in unbelievably impressive fashion and playing test cricket in a way that's never been tried before.

And so many great stories for several players young and old.

Stokes at the heart of it and is an amazing sportsman.

Yes the women winning the euros was fabulous and Mead an integral part of it and should have been recognised absolutely.

Just feel something special has been developed by England cricket team and it will be period of dominance for many years to come.

But if people not fans of cricket, can see why they would focus on a footballing triumph to gain the award.

The England men's cricket team is still far more significant than the England women's football team. The latter were always going to win the awards but the cricket team won a World Cup!

SPOTY is a light entertainment show, rather than a serious assessment of sporting prowess anyway. Ronnie O'Sullivan has won his world championship SEVEN times, never mind the other major trophies the same amount, but didn't have a hope in hell of winning.

Agree with a lot of this, but even though it might be third most popular, everything is a distant second, third etc behind football in the UK. The biggest test ground in England only holds 30k.

Most people I know in the UK have little or no interest in cricket or a passing interest in results at best. I was the same but living in Australia its hard to avoid as it is a big deal here, far more so than in England. I'd never been to a cricket match until I lived here, hadn't even considered it. The T20 was great but probably didn't resonate hugely back home. Recent test results have also been excellent but the Pakistan series only finished a few days ago so wouldn't have been factored into SPOTY.

If cricket wants to win the award then do to the Aussies what they've been doing recently to others. I certainly would love to see that. Scoring over 500 in 75 overs v Pakistan was ridiculous and it would have been 600 in a day if the full overs were bowled. And that dominance you talk of would also be great as it would really get under the skin of the Aussies.

Probably because, like darts and golf, snooker isn’t a real sport. It’s a hobby. Might as well have the subbuteo champion or the skittles champion in the running.

Bare bones.

How many kids will suddenly get into cricket because of the England cricket team won the T20 World Cup?And how many young girls have Beth Mead and the Women’s team inspired to try football for the first time after that glorious day in July?
I just hope the opportunity to really grow girls and womens football isn’t lost. But congratulations to Ben Stokes and the rest of the England team for a wonderful achievement.

Is that Female sports personality of the year or is Sports personality of the year. Can't remember if the award got split to male and female.

5 out of the 6 people who could have won have their sports on the BBC which is amazing when the BBC have the rights to about 3 events. The men’s cricket team won a World Cup not a Euros in their own country. Men’s cricket is a far bigger sport in this country than women’s football. Their win was fantastic but the men’s cricket win was a far bigger and better success. Had the women won the World Cup then absolutely fair enough. But like with most things on the BBC it all so predictable who is going to win. We have had a British Major winner in the golf and they didn’t even make the shortlist but someone who plays Curling makes it. Curling is played by about 8 people. That’s why I don’t bother with this show anymore. Rarely even watch the BBC anymore.

Agree with a lot of that, SPOTY has been unwatchable for a long long while, but not so much your take on the cricket.

Cricket lost any prominence when batsman became incapable of taking a 5 day test over the 5 full days, it’s almost pointless buying a ticket for the 5th or even 4th day now. As for the T20, it’s a bit like Man City winning a 5 a side tournament. 20 overs is kids school sport.

I have no interest in awards shows, but if the concept of “Personality” rather than talent or results has any relevance…then what Stokes has achieved is staggering. England’s cricketers are largely the same group as a year ago and no more talented or skilled than they were then, but thanks to the supportive attitude towards risk-taking of Stokes and McCallum, they have been transformed in a way that surpasses even Mike Brearley’s impact of 1981. It may even end up overturning the game all over the world. Thanks to Stokes’s “Personality” and its influence in a leadership role.

Isn't the issue with the cricket that they ballsed the Ashes up 4-0 at the start of the year?

It was a public vote and as far as I know, guns were not held to peoples’ heads to vote for the Lionesses. If the cricket fraternity were so bothered, they should have voted.

Personally I thought the Lionesses were fantastic, class act from start to finish. They sound more eloquent than their male counterparts; have overcome more to get to where they are; and frankly, gave the country more of a lift too; as evidenced by them cleaning up at the event. Good luck to them in Australia next year.

Thought the whole event was itself upstaged by the Rob Barrow/Kevin Sinfield piece. That was heart wrenching to watch. What a sports personality Barrow is; what a great friendship he and Sinfield have, and what a wonderful family the Barrows are.

True that curling is only popular in a small number of countries.

Just like cricket and rugby then.

Of course they're sports. They may not require running around for 90 minutes but there's still physical exertion and skill involved.
