Paul Smyth - Social Media Abuse 13:33 - Jan 2 with 10946 viewsBenny_the_Ball

The club today released a statement condemning social media abuse of Paul Smyth and his family on Instagram.

https://www.qpr.co.uk/news/202

It beggars belief that a player who gives his all and has just signed a contract extension is subjected to such treatment. Hopefully the perpetrator will be identified and dealt with.

Hello Clive

What an absolute hero you are.

Yeah, I reckon he’d be very proud of you, Clive.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

And annuver fing - we only recently had a thread on this board requesting people to list the QPR players they most 'despised'. I'm not the greatest at the use of English, but I do know that you're only a heartbeat away from falling into the same category as Smyth's abusers if you adopt a mentality of hate toward someone.

You're right on this Boston & I shouldn't have expressed my feelings on a certain ex player on that thread.

There was some guy trolling Bryan and George on the Hoops and Dreams YouTube channel earlier. It’s a ridiculous world. George is what? 16-18 years old just trying to start a journalistic pursuit for himself and someone’s calling him dull and that he’s talking “f’n b0llocks”

There's a cohort of our online support who absolutely detest Smyth to weird levels, but the messages he's received go beyond that into proper mental illness.

Unfortunately there's a lot of it about. In life and internet and society in general, but at QPR in particular there is definitely an unhinged weirdo or two within our midst who get off on anonymous hate campaigns via email and DM.

I've been receiving stuff like this for the last couple of years. Dozens of them... And I'm not the only one from the podcast/website circuit who's getting this stuff either. Always deeply personal and designed to cause maximum hurt and upset.

Sorry you’ve had to receive that pure nastiness. I hope you can dismiss it for what it is.

Being mentally unwell does not correlate with individuals that would definitely do such a thing.

In my experience, as having suffered poor mental health myself and working in support roles helping people who are mentally suffering, would say the cases where people start being nasty, vicious and horrifically manipulative like this, are extremely rare. Perhaps, only a small percentage more than a person who does not suffer their own mental torment.

Its why mental illness is still much misinterpreted and treated by those without insight and empathy as to how people suffer with diagnosed conditions.

The person that has done this to Smythie and to you to Clive, also. There is no other word for it, they are evil, without morals and a criminal. But absolutely not, would the great majority who suffer with their mental health do this in anyways much like the rest of society, as a whole.

Hope the individuals concerned get locked up, to consider about the impact of their awful actions and words. Clearly they have enough insight to consider that they can get away with this and subsequently enjoy their notoriety.

But its not right or helpful to call out this person as mentally ill as a given. That kind of belief sets back anti mental health stigma campaigns about more understanding mental ill health, by a couple of decades or so.

Hope the perpetrator gets their come tuppence as soon as. The police are particularly poor at cracking down on these incidents, but in reality this is a police matter and if there were deterrents people would not do it.

I wonder how much of this is from kids who don't know better. In some ways I hope so, because the alternative is horrible.

As a society we appear to have failed here. Per the point from Tyson earlier, as a young 'un there was consequences to giving abuse to someone, telling off from your parents at a young age, trouble at school, getting punched in the face, you learned quick. These days, teenage oiks with a keyboard and internet access, there's no consequence. 2 minutes quick message, ha ha ha, show my friends. No thought of the impact on others and no consequences. The downside of social media is way way worse than the upside in my opinion, wish it had never been invented.

I wish I had an answer for solving this, more transparency about who's behind the accounts or something, but that opens a whole other bucket of worms.

Sorry you're having to deal with this Clive, and anyone else.

What i don't understand is why Smythy is targeted at all. A more likeable, committed, club-loving player you'd struggle to find. Is he world class, no, but noone is in this league.

None of the players deserve this kind of abuse, but I agree with you that Smyth definitely doesn't. He gives everything when he plays (although yesterday he barely got going, but that might well have been partly down to that side of the pitch being in such a poor state - Norwich created nothing from that flank either).

Hopefully the fool who sent the abuse will be found and banned for life (if not prosecuted as well).

Just seen the posts concerned, as someone reposted them on Bluesky.

Clearly someone with serious and profound health issues. Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether that helps Smyth and his family deal with it or not.

Sending them love.

While we are on the topic of how the club handles the topic of abuse, does the club consider it acceptable for a certain minority to sing "Marti, Marti you're a c%$!" or "Lino, Lino you're a c%$!"? It seems that oversteps the boundary of bants/home crowd influence vs puerile, obscene abuse.

The lino version of that.

Its usually the young ones that are doing the naughty teenage boy thing..Still not good but you could put it down to young boys wanting to appear big or finding it funny.

Regards calling a linesmen that in a game, for me, i personally think that would put the linos back up and any 50/ 50 situations likely to go in favour of the oppostion, as a consequence.

That c@@t yesterday didn’t need any abuse to give every decision to Norwich.

Dunno about kids. I've met some right middle-aged nutcases on my journeys with the Rangers. Rarely bump into them in the pubs, always seems to be a train where you're stuck with them for hours.

The irony of the starter of the post you mention has played the victim on this very post

I agree with your post though, I remember once using the word 'hate' and being told what a strong word it was... Only as I get older does that fully sink in

It's part penis envy and part living on pot noodles.

I reckon the social media companies could easily identify them and ban them if they really wanted to. But they don't want to.

I believe that, if you use any form of social media, you should
a) treat it as a postcard to the world, I.e. everybody can read it
b) don't post anything you couldn't say to somebody face to face.

I think we all know someone who has fallen down the social media wormhole I think at some point in the future people will look back at the last 10 years of history with total disbelief as to how we allowed this to happen and what it has done to society

For me, b) was the unwritten rule when these boards were on the old rivals.net platform as inevitably, there would come a time when you did meet other posters in person, both Rs fans and fans of other clubs.

In terms of consequences, I followed the Joey Barton case with interest - it looks like he was very close to doing bird there.

I don't like those chants either, even when we find their decisions frustrating.

I know the club issue statements about bad language etc, but I am not sure what action they can take when it is about 100 or so fans chanting those songs.
