I cannot believe anybody rates this guy.

He's a total embarrassment under crosses, he's too small and I'm not sure he can even jump.

He is CLEARLY not a viable goalkeeper.

It's a shame, as him aside, we were looking quite good. But you can't win games consistently with a bad goalkeeper - and Walsh is a bad keeper.

Sadly none of our three keepers are good enough and it should have been addressed in the window.

https://fbref.com/en/comps/10/

For context, he's the fifth youngest keeper in the championship. His save percentage is 10th lowest in the championship. Not great, but given his age, I can see these stats improving next year. Teams around us like Norwich and Sheffield United also have keepers with save percentages in the 60s(%).
Walsh's stats aren't amazing but they aren't wildly out of line with other keepers from average championship teams which suggests he may not be totally out of his depth as some are saying.
I'm in the give him another year camp as we don't have much money to spend and it would be better invested elsewhere.

Questions that need to be answered.......

1- Has he got better since the beginning of the season when he was given the No1 GK position??
2 - Will he get any better???

Tough questions.......but need to be answered by the 'Management' whoever that is.

1 - he's only played 20 games with a break for a pretty big injury in between. I think his distribution has improved and he is beginning to come off his line more although not always to good effect.

2 - The only way we find out is by playing him. Not sure we pick up anyone significantly better on the cheap so unless we spend a fair bit of our transfer fund on a new keeper, let's give him next season to see if he improves. Cooper should be back to provide some reasonable competition.

I think CM and both full backs need more of our transfer budget than GK.

He’s definitely improved this season, but from a very low bar - he was terrible before his injury.

Not convinced he’ll improve much, but only time will tell.

His performance on Saturday summed it up for me; he made some good stops but created a lot of his own chaos.

General consensus from many here is we need a GK, RB, LB (assuming we don’t keep ND) & C/AM in the Summer.
For me, by far the most important is GK. We have to assume Nardi will leave and I suspect Hamer will be released too. So with Walsh & Cooper we will need to bring in a 3rd for the squad.
Much will depend on what/who we can afford as to whether he will be 1st choice or not.
Cooper needs to be involved, didn’t Nourry suggest if your not in the 1st team squad by 23, you’ve missed your chance and likely to be offloaded ?

Regards developing players, I’m not sure our coaches (& the plethora of ‘performance’ employees have much to shout about. We don’t seem to improve many players from Youths to Dev Squad to 1st team, baring in mind it’s such a priority for us. Eze for sure. But others…..? Few and far between IMO.

Regarding the last paragraph, we can't hold the current coaching team and setup responsible for that. Perhaps this is why most of the coaches in the Youth/DS were moved on?

I think they are moving the players through pretty well over the past 12 months and if they can get 1 into the first team squad per season that would be a very good ratio. Much more realistic than 1 out of 5.

Bringing youngsters through takes time and patience and isn't it 99% fail to make the grade.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

Yes, we are QPR SUPPORTers, as you say, but then according to your own logic with Walsh at age of 17/18 in development terms and as you say he may be learning for two or three more seasons. Well, in such a critical position, what reasons would the club put so much into a player that could potentially cost us many points whilst learning on the job with little chance of being replaced.

Just asking the question, goalkeepers are often seen as the number one for an entire season. Its currently clear, Walsh is the choice this season, and appreciate his form has seen him only play half of our games, but the club currently have him as number one, and many on here are happy to have him here, in that role for all of next season.

My question is why ???

He has not, as yet shown any indications, he is anywhere, near a championship top half side's number one. For me, for ourselves to continue anorher season with him in goal, is a very negative approach, let alone two or three, while he is very raw.

Yes, supposedly, we are currently developing young players with the hope of selling on, but goalkeepers have less of a high transfer fee and Walsh is not going to ever be close to making us, any kind of dosh. Yes that's simply just my opinion, but really who thinks we will get much more than a million for him, at any point.

Whats the point in developing a player with such a low ceiling, but also in a critical position. If he costs us ten points more than a basic solid championship level keeper who has more experience, the goalkeeper is the one key position, where i would prefer the club focussed more on what the keeper can do right now, as opposed to, in three years time.

If we can't loan him out to a league one or two level outfit, then for me its unwise to put so much trust and faith in a goalkeeper, who has a low chance of being particularly successful at this level, next season.

The club will make a decision and i would be extremely surprised if they persevere with Walsh. I said the same about him, at the beginning of this season.

I think we all agree that Walsh has been mis-managed and should have been loaned out over the past couple of season's in Div 3 or 4 to get vital game time and experience. You also mentioned that ‘form’ had kept him out for half this season. In fact he was out for three months with a broken wrist, which again has severely hampered his development. My point really is that none of this is his fault. He is being picked now and he is hardly doing to say, ‘please don’t play me, I don’t feel ready’ And when you think about it, the remaining game are an ideal environment for him to learn his trade. What his ceiling is, what his value might be in two years time, nobody knows. Will he get that opportunity to develop in the first team? - only the club knows that. But he is here for now and we need to back him not barrack him. We know how much confidence is a major factor in a footballer’s performance. We have seen top class strikers become shot-shy when they hit a lean patch.
GK is the worst position of all, as an error often leads to a goal. A defender mis-times a tackle, he might have a team-mate to bail him out. Mid-field passes the ball to an opponent (ours do that ALL the time) most times no harm done. Striker misses a ‘sitter’, we all moan but even with Bennie at Preston, we cut him some slack. ‘Young player learning his trade’ we say. ‘At least he is getting into the right positions’ we say. Yet for some reason when our keeper (any keeper) makes an error whether it leads to a goal or not, we are down their throats. That is why comments like ‘emmbarrasing’ by the OP are unhelpful. Let’s encourage Walsh to be the best he can be- that’s in all our best interests. Time will tell just how good his ‘best’ is. But we will never see it, if his confidence is shot because of abuse.

We must persevere with him and allow him to face the potent and venomous finishers of the higher level. He doesn't need "toughing up" with a loan to a lower division club, he's already confident and physically robust, he just needs to build his experience against cute experienced attackers.

Twine tested him twice on Saturday with awkward accurate low shots that wickedly bounced right in front of him. He dealt with both of competently but his detractors will say he clumsily fumbled and scrambled them away.

I don't get the whole "he cost us X points" argument tbh. People never look at an outfield player's performances across a season and count up up how many goals he gave away or sitters he missed and say "he cost us Y points".

Wasn't that largely down to the insanely polarised (and long-running) debate about Dykes? People were scratching around for any 'facts' they could use to back their argument. It's incredibly rare that people do it for outfield players.

He has got better over the season, but 9 pages on here tells you the consensus are far from convinced.

I predict that he's got a lot more errors in him and will cost us games next season. If he's not taking us forward then we need better. Also, per our 'model', nobody is going to pay big bucks so find a better prospect from L1

Typical young player performance. A couple of good saves a couple of heart in mouth moments.

Personally I'd tell him now you're No1 next season.

He does give the impression he is playing on adrenaline at the moment. Take a breath and calm down son.

Well we do need another keeper (ideally a more experienced one, aged maybe 28-32?) to give Walsh stronger competition, given that Nardi and Hamer aren't going to feature and clearly won't be here next season.

The double save at almost point blank range was very good. He can do it but his concentration seems to be an issue sometimes. Some blamed him for the Preston goal but that's bollox, it was an excellent finish.

All that said, we need to give Murphy Cooper a chance next season perhaps?

Yeah I didn't understand the blame for the Preston goal - as you say was a good finish, player took the shot early before Walsh could properly set himself.

I think the point on his footwork is a very good one, dmm.

I do think it can be coached, though - reaction drills, ladders, electronic cones etc.

Footwork can also be coached mentally, in that inexperienced keepers (or keepers out of form) can panic and dive without taking the quick steps needed before the dive. What Westy says here about Walsh sometimes going down in stages comes into play as well as that can indicate a keeper who - through nerves - just 'falls' rather 'shuffle and dives'.

Our ten year old is a goalkeeper and from the coaching he gets, it feels like footwork is the most important thing.

Nowhere have I abused him.

My statement is that I have doubts, his talent will ever be up to this level.

Its a fans forum and we are all entitled to an opinion.

Just personally saying, if we are serious about ever attempting to get promotion or improving, we can't have players in such a critical position of goalkeeper, learning on the job for two or three seasons. It will cost us a lot of points and when one or two points difference could be the difference between success and failure, why take that risk.

Nothing against Walsh in anyway. Hope he succeeds obviously and proves myself wrong. I just can't see it myself personally.

We have managed to recruit some lower level players that have come in and hit the ground running at this level. Why not with a goalkeeper. If you and most others on here, are happy with Walsh and think he is the man, then that's your right.

I have concerns but of course am not going to abuse a QPR player. We get behind the whole team. I hope Joe comes good, but the jury is currently out.

That's not abuse, though for me. Its just an opinion that's different to yours.

Those 2 have progressed, but until recently couldn’t be considered regulars, Kolli fell out of favour and Morgan has only recently become a starter again. But Yes, there are positive signs for Both.
But out of how many ? 15, 20, 25 ??

I fully agree, there should be more. We should be looking at ‘developing/improving Everyone we sign, in reality, 1 in 5 would be acceptable, but we’re more like 1 in 12/15. Especially when you consider how many coaches & development staff we employ.

Most clubs would consider themselves lucky if 1 in 10 graduate from DS to 1st team regulars.

I personally don't think Walsh is consistent enough, and his floor is too low. I don't think we'll be pushing for playoffs with him goal as his worst isn't 6, it's 3 or 4, and over the course of a championship season, that'll get ya

Not interested in pursuing this pettiness, because I'm boring myself now never mind all the other loftforworders unfortunate enough to be following this thread. But just for clarity my last line never mentioned you or indeed anyone else abusing Walsh at all. What I did say, was speculating on what might happen to him in the future should he be subjected to abuse which could negatively impact his confidence
Now that really is my last word on the matter.
