| Walsh 21:12 - Feb 24 with 54076 views | WestbourneR | I cannot believe anybody rates this guy. He's a total embarrassment under crosses, he's too small and I'm not sure he can even jump. He is CLEARLY not a viable goalkeeper. It's a shame, as him aside, we were looking quite good. But you can't win games consistently with a bad goalkeeper - and Walsh is a bad keeper. Sadly none of our three keepers are good enough and it should have been addressed in the window. [Post edited 24 Feb 21:21]

I don't want to be insulting but the players read these columns and you can imagine the effect this sort of opinion can have on a young player. The answer is to have competition for the position. We have tried that so the only answer is to buy a good keeper.Players want to play so plenty in the premiership reserves.

| Walsh on 15:06 - Mar 15 by Benny_the_Ball | That's how I saw it. A lack of preparation and positioning rather than raw ability. Hopefully with more games he'll improve these aspects as this season he's effectively been thrown into the deep end to learn his trade. |
Walsh was scrambling back into position, as was Edwards, as their goalscorer was walking through our midfield. Not a single challenge, which clearly caused Walsh and Edwards to try and get back and neither were properly set. Yet again the Rangers CM fails in its basic job. Really poor, watch Hayden jogging.

| Walsh on 09:07 - Mar 15 by francisbowles | Interesting assessment, Brian. Could the step to the right be trying to see the ball with players in front of him maybe blocking his view. I was watching with Leicester commentary and Gerry Taggert said something like, it was a wonderful strike and that no goalkeeper would save it. They has a couple of ex players in their studio at HT and they were raving about it as well. They were all a very morose bunch apart from that. Almost made me depressed after the game, until I remembered the score. 'Gift' and 'gifted' were their words of the day. I shouldn't but I will,😂🤣😂 |
"Could the step to the right be trying to see the ball with players in front of him maybe blocking his view." Good point, but I'm just not sure to be honest, FB, and I don't like guessing. That's where the goalie coach would I'm sure be asking asking Walsh how it looked for him. Also, they'd have many, many camera angles to go through.

| Walsh on 19:06 - Mar 14 by francisbowles | I thought Walsh was pretty good today and the op is way over the top. It was a great strike which he had little chance of saving and where his defenders failed to close down their best player. Even if you think differently, he was fine overall today. Walsh has had some poor games and some good games. Noury has mishandled his development and he's learning his trade in the spotlight. At this point, we need to persevere until the end of the season and reassess. |
Agreed. The Leicester shot was a pretty good one and I think Walsh had Edwards blocking his line of sight. I was more p1ssed off that no one came out to close down the shot in the first place.

Wrexham x 2 anyone? But it's not his fault, these are the kind of mistakes he should be making and learning from ON LOAN!!!

Got to be one of our top earners and supposed to be a standard bearer for the youngsters to aspire to. All I see is someone trying to get through a game without taking any risks, whilst covering their own back. Another player at QPR doing the bare minimum for me, another unnecessary signing made to appease the fanbase

Um... T Block. It's a football message-board, the whole point is opinons. Totally fair enough you don't rate or agree with mine. You can trash my opinon all you like, many do. But I'm not going to not say someone isn't a good player just because it might not be a nice thing to say. I don't remember anyone rallying to the defence of the hurt feelings of Zan Celar... Which does bring me to some very broken logic in your post. The idea that because he's rated at the club he must actually be good. You don't need me to point the unendingly long list of examples that prove that doesn't hold up.

Have to agree, he doesn’t seem to get above 5/10 in any department. Bearing in mind we already had Field, who we’ve now moved out on loan because he couldn’t get game time, it looks like another reactionary and unnecessary signing.

I'm sure if someone had offered a loan fee for Hayden he would have gone instead. I'm 100% sure that Field went because he was the only player who we had any interest in during that last window. The CEO/DOF blew the budget buying Edwards and the spirit of the Coventry striker. They absolutely had to get some money back in and off the wage bill, Field was the only option. I doubt the manager had any say in it, and even with Field's two new contracts I bet he still earns less than Hayden. I like Field, he is a proper steady Eddy in its truest form, and Norwich seem to be getting the best out of him with their formation and style. As a development (sic) club I understand why Varane gets in ahead, but this league has been so wide open for most of the year that you can't help but wonder what if?
| Walsh on 07:29 - Mar 22 with 2486 views | Hastings_Hoops | As posted on another thread… I’m going to throw Joe Walsh into the MOTM discussion v Portsmouth. Having watched the extended highlights just now, he had no chance with the goal they scored - great strike from Jon Swift- (as you would expect from Jon Swift if left in challenged / 20 yards out. The shot which he parried over in the first half was actually moving quite a bit in the air and he was facing the sun (watch the replay on the highlights from behind the shot) - it was actually a decent save considering. When you watch some of the Portsmouth fans blogs, he was pulling off save after save in the second half. Really good performance and credit where it’s due - particularly as we’re so quick to criticise our young players other times I think his saves at 1-0 and 3-1 were significant. He did have a very good game and kept QPR ahead with his saves. He needs to be a bit more consistent, but that will only come with 1st team games. It has been hard for him this season as he has been thrown in at the deep end when he should have been out on loan to gain 1st team experience. Cooper got this at Barnsley and that was the right call, but the club got it wrong on Walsh., as not having a better keeper has resulted in many dropped points in this very open league. | | | |

https://theanalyst.com/competi Hit the goalkeeping up on here. Goals prevented, Rushworth they reckon has saved Cov 9.7 goals, best in the league. Walsh has cost us 9.5, the worst.

Yeah that is pretty damning, especially compared to Nardi with a similar number of games. Going to be a recruitment priority this summer, along with full backs, centre mids. Same as every year

It's also the worst by a LONG way. 2nd last is Bazunu costing them an estimated 5.4 goals... For a club that's so hot on data and analytics, it would go against their whole approach to retain Walsh for next season. Like I said, you don't start development prospects in goal in this league unless they're special. If you're being kind you can say it was to work out if we had something with a young keeper with a prototype build. Well now we have our answer.

I think he has demonstrated all of the necessary skills to make it in this division, but he has next to no experience, so consistency is therefore a problem, and he would have surely be more rounded by now had he served an apprenticeship at a lower level. I don't trust the Goals Prevented stat, because no-one has ever proved it's accuracy. (keepers in certain teams face shots only from tight angles, etc). (keepers in certain teams will have settled defences) (keepers in certain defences will have communicative defences, higher lines, better set-piece coaching, better blockers) etc etc I completely agree with you, though, that "you don't start development prospects in goal". Again, I'll go with the old building saying that 'when you discover a new material you build your neighbour's house with it first'.

Walsh is only 22. The average age of a Championship goalkeeper is 27/28 I think. He’s very young. Now I fully agree about learning on our time isn’t ideal - he should have been out on loan developing - but now we’re here, now he’s going to have played a full season in the Championship minus some time out the side for injury and form, isn’t the call about whether he will be better next season/where his ceiling lies? If we think he’ll go from one of the worst records to a mid table one - while still having huge development potential - is he worth persevering with? He’s still 4/5 years from his peak.

The whole goalkeeper situation has been horribly mismanaged, imo. Cooper had the loan experience so should have been ahead of Walsh anyway, but we should have sent Walsh on loan and played Nardi, with Hamer as backup. Again, unless they're showing signs of being special, you get 100 appearances in a lower league and then see where they are. It could well be he's going to have a great career at this level, but experience is key and he could make those mistakes elsewhere until he finds that consistency - the same way we did with Lumley. The fact we also fcked Nardi off, going back and forth with him, and ultimately not playing him in favour of the worst keeper in the league, feels poorly done.
