I cannot believe anybody rates this guy.

He's a total embarrassment under crosses, he's too small and I'm not sure he can even jump.

He is CLEARLY not a viable goalkeeper.

It's a shame, as him aside, we were looking quite good. But you can't win games consistently with a bad goalkeeper - and Walsh is a bad keeper.

Sadly none of our three keepers are good enough and it should have been addressed in the window.

For me, it's much to early to.judge him. He needs 75-100 first team games before we can say he has reached his level of capability. He can appear nervous at times and needs that experience to see if he can overcome it.

It is funny - hilarious even.

Forget the ratings……. What did your eyes and brain tell you from actually watching the game?

I thought he was fine. I noticed the Sky app made him man of the match as well.

I realise some people need regular scapegoats but my eyes told me he did fine along with the rest of the defence.

I find it surprising many can’t see how unathletic he is.

Watching him ‘dive’ to save a slow basic shot is like painful three stage movement. It’s like me bending down trying to pick the post up off the floor.

He’s so slow to react. So unlithe. There is no spring in his movement.

He also just causes panic by dropping endless ricks. He was very lucky to not concede two goals yesterday that were entirely of his own making.

He just does not possess any innate goalkeeper attributes to my mind.

How long does the club give a player to reach their potential and therefore maximum transfer value?
He's only played 20 odd games so I think he should be given another season before he is deemed surplus.

His performances can be erratic, but he is very young for a GK and he's played less games than both Morgan and Kolli who can both go missing in games. Was Kolli playing yesterday?!

It's a tough one. Yesterday great saves, but he is like a jack-in-a-box at times. I put it down to inexperience.

Yes, he's young and inexperienced, but I'd argue that even at his tender age he should be showing better basic skills.

I don't think he made particularly good saves yesterday, except for the one when he bravely dived at a player's feet in the first half. Other than that, his saves were usually pushed back into dangerous areas or straight to the opposition. That will happen to the best of keepers, but not as often as it does with Walsh.

All that said, it would please me no end if the lad proved me wrong.

On the counter, Chris Woods had zero games and was 19 when we brought him and stuck him straight in. He was pretty good for us, but probably peaked at Norwich and Rangers.

I feel sorry for Walsh. He really should have had 60+ games in lower league sides before this season, but has been so unlucky with the timing of injuries.

My memory of Woods is rather different. I thought he cost us promotion!

Back to Walsh. IMO he is the best goalkeeper at the club, but I can't envisage him ever being good enough for a team in the top half of the Championship

A real strange game from him yesterday. On the one hand he's made us the saves that won us the point, on the other almost all of those saves (bar the double before half time) were fairly terrifying to watch him execute and often far more complicated than they needed to be, and he did that Tony Roberts over the shoulder drop again in the first half and was very lucky there was nobody behind him.

No idea what mark I'm giving him.

We gave him a 7 in the car home. Clean sheet and I thought there was a save in the first half that was deflected that he did well to save, the double save just before half time and the shot from distance in the second half going into the bottom right hand corner he pushed away for a corner which was particularly good as It’s those shots from distance he needs to improve on but that can be coached into him.

I guess we'll never change your viewpoint.

I thought he had a decent game yesterday - apart from the spill from the mishit shot.
A few decent saves. Plus his starting position to collect through balls is decent. I think he's growing into the position. And I'm not sure where we get anybody significantly better.

Is there a Championship keeper this year that has really been outstanding? Rushworth, at Coventry has been the best of an ordinary bunch.

I have to say the two words that come to mind when I watch him are "Tony" and "Roberts".

He may go on and become a decent keeper, but at the moment, I have a sharp intake of breath every time the ball goes his way.. There's nothing about his game that suggests "commanding", and for me he's the weakest link in our starting eleven.

My brother never liked Rufus Brevett - couldn’t change his mind. In fact mention of his name makes him go off on one.

My friend’s Dad had a bizarre dislike of Andy Impey.

I never took to Colin Clarke (couldn’t tell you why - I was only 8/9).

I guess Walsh is your pet dislike.

It's very interesting to see how polarised we've become over Walsh, and I can't see us coming to a consensus anytime soon.

For my part, having liked his performances for the DS, I was keen to see how he'd do this season. But my hopes he'd show he was capable of becoming a Championship keeper have withered as the season progressed. My particular issue with him is that he doesn't move his feet enough when facing a shot, which slows down his attempts to reach the ball. That is not a coaching issue but a basic failure on his part.

The decision taken on him for next season could well be career shaping.

I think the point on his footwork is a very good one, dmm.

I do think it can be coached, though - reaction drills, ladders, electronic cones etc.

Footwork can also be coached mentally, in that inexperienced keepers (or keepers out of form) can panic and dive without taking the quick steps needed before the dive. What Westy says here about Walsh sometimes going down in stages comes into play as well as that can indicate a keeper who - through nerves - just 'falls' rather 'shuffle and dives'.

‘My pet dislike’ suggests it’s irrational

It’s utterly rational.

The evidence is out there on the pitch every week.

The confidence in him is irrational. A pet like for many of our fans based purely on the fact he’s 24 and plays for QPR.

Zero comparison with Brevett and Impey. Zero.

General consensus from many here is we need a GK, RB, LB (assuming we don’t keep ND) & C/AM in the Summer.
For me, by far the most important is GK. We have to assume Nardi will leave and I suspect Hamer will be released too. So with Walsh & Cooper we will need to bring in a 3rd for the squad.
Much will depend on what/who we can afford as to whether he will be 1st choice or not.
Cooper needs to be involved, didn’t Nourry suggest if your not in the 1st team squad by 23, you’ve missed your chance and likely to be offloaded ?

Regards developing players, I’m not sure our coaches (& the plethora of ‘performance’ employees have much to shout about. We don’t seem to improve many players from Youths to Dev Squad to 1st team, baring in mind it’s such a priority for us. Eze for sure. But others…..? Few and far between IMO.

He’s not very good, it’s plain and simple.
He’s also not that young, he’s 24, above the average age of our typical starting 11.
He’ll be a okay second keeper for a championship team and a good starting option for a league one/two team but he really needs a big uplift to be what we need him to be.
Loan him out next season and let him make mistakes elsewhere and hopefully come back a much better keeper.

Kolli has come through the youth set up and DS to the first team and Morgan from the DS to the first team. In the next few seasons we do need to see more coming through.

I have to say, I think the window for a development loan in League One/Two has probably gone now. Like you say, he's 24. I think you're more likely correct in your assessment that he's a Brian Murphy-style career number two bench keeper.

Those 2 have progressed, but until recently couldn’t be considered regulars, Kolli fell out of favour and Morgan has only recently become a starter again. But Yes, there are positive signs for Both.
But out of how many ? 15, 20, 25 ??

I fully agree, there should be more. We should be looking at ‘developing/improving Everyone we sign, in reality, 1 in 5 would be acceptable, but we’re more like 1 in 12/15. Especially when you consider how many coaches & development staff we employ.

Great post.
But I’m not sure we will get another keeper in .
Walsh will be number 1 whether we think he’s good enough or not . Cooper and Saloman move up the list and worst come to the worst Hamer comes back in on a rolling 6 month contract .
Remember, we were saying the same about LB this time last year and RND only came in because Larkeche suffered a bad injury and Esquirdinha was no where near ready. Although he looked better then than he did now .

I like Walsh, would be happy for him to retain the jersey next season. He's young and still developing but I'm content that he's already serviceable and should be allowed to grow and develop. I don't worry about him or feel he's a liability at all.

Those that reference his age as a negative factor in his development are falling into the trap of comparing the goalkeeping position to any out-field position. Goalkeeping is completely unique in terms of development and accruing experience. Even when on the pitch, a GK may see little or no action, so gain little experience even when clocking up another appearance. Coaching different scenarios is fine, but there is no substitute for game-time. The reality is, while outfield players reach their peak in terms of experience (as in maxing on their ability) at 27/28, for a GK it is 32-33. So in terms of experience, Walsh is about 19 or 20. In fact, due to his mis-management by the hierarchy (and his injury this season), in terms of games played and experience gained I would argue that he is the outfield equivalent of 17 or 18 years. So absolutely a kid, learning his trade in the full glare of the public eye - so let’s cut him some slack.
If by this time next year, we see no discernible improvement, or if he has been ousted by Cooper or another keeper, then fair enough, he may not have the credentials to be a Championship standard keeper. In the meantime, let’s support him - we are QPR SUPPORTers after all.

Yes, we are QPR SUPPORTers, as you say, but then according to your own logic with Walsh at age of 17/18 in development terms and as you say he may be learning for two or three more seasons. Well, in such a critical position, what reasons would the club put so much into a player that could potentially cost us many points whilst learning on the job with little chance of being replaced.

Just asking the question, goalkeepers are often seen as the number one for an entire season. Its currently clear, Walsh is the choice this season, and appreciate his form has seen him only play half of our games, but the club currently have him as number one, and many on here are happy to have him here, in that role for all of next season.

My question is why ???

He has not, as yet shown any indications, he is anywhere, near a championship top half side's number one. For me, for ourselves to continue anorher season with him in goal, is a very negative approach, let alone two or three, while he is very raw.

Yes, supposedly, we are currently developing young players with the hope of selling on, but goalkeepers have less of a high transfer fee and Walsh is not going to ever be close to making us, any kind of dosh. Yes that's simply just my opinion, but really who thinks we will get much more than a million for him, at any point.

Whats the point in developing a player with such a low ceiling, but also in a critical position. If he costs us ten points more than a basic solid championship level keeper who has more experience, the goalkeeper is the one key position, where i would prefer the club focussed more on what the keeper can do right now, as opposed to, in three years time.

If we can't loan him out to a league one or two level outfit, then for me its unwise to put so much trust and faith in a goalkeeper, who has a low chance of being particularly successful at this level, next season.

The club will make a decision and i would be extremely surprised if they persevere with Walsh. I said the same about him, at the beginning of this season.
