| This year's out of the blue signing - Tariq Lamptey on 12:47 - Jul 22 by Northernr | Yeh Fiorentina being willing to release a player they bought just a year ago suggests they think he's completely done, doesn't it? Although that £6m figure is reported as being as low as £2.5m elsewhere so perhaps, much like us, they thought it might be a risk worth taking and are just cutting losses after a year. That's a nominal fee for a top flight club these days. I'm like you, I'm very excited about him, but it all feels a bit Kieron Dyer. |
Dyer was in his 30s when we got him and we were in the Prem. With Dyer we had age and injuries against us. This lad could be a compete crock but probably his last chance to make a football career. So age and probably a bit of desire is in our favour here. Our medical team track record is against us though. But I want us to sign either players from lower league or abroad on cheap to develop or good young / mid age players that have had few injuries and need a “restart”.

He was really good until it turned out that his hamstrings were made of dried spaghetti. The ACL won't be great either for a player who used to rely on explosive acceleration and rapid changes of direction. |
Friend of mine has worked for Tony Bloom for years and says it’s common knowledge that Lamptey was a total weapon, as is probably unsurprising for a kid brought up in a top academy and who had Man United trying to sign him only a few years ago. Hopefully he has been humbled by his swift descent from those highs!

| This year's out of the blue signing - Tariq Lamptey on 10:15 - Jul 22 by terryb | Myke, are you sure that you're qualified to comment on Tariq Lamptey, when you state that you've never heard of him & only watch Irish players in The Premier? On that subject, if you watched Ferguson at Brighton, you would have seen Lamptey! You are also making the assumption that he couldn't play 40 games a season based on his recent injuries. Perhaps he can't, but maybe, just maybe, he has now recovered & would be able to cope with that. After all, Vale looks as if he could & Field certainly could after their injuries. Just on ability, he is probably the best footballer at Rangers in the past ten years, apart from Eze. And he is definitely not old! [Post edited 22 Jul 12:14]

Well I suppose as qualified as you or anyone else on the forum Terry which is not qualified at all. Just another opinion, which I think we are all equally ‘qualified’ to have. I never said he was old either, just at mid-twenties, maybe a youngER, more robust RB might suit our needs (and pocket) better. I HOPE he works out, brilliant if it does.

| This year's out of the blue signing - Tariq Lamptey on 10:31 - Jul 22 by Lblock | People are picking out Sam Field - totally agree but his injuries weren't what you'd consider serious before we picked him up. He is the one swallow though. Vale is not a robust player but I have to give him credit for getting into the team after a nasty back injury - anyone with one of those has my sympathy. I wouldn't consider him a first team regular and I'd question him being able to do a run of games due to his stature and the nature of this Division. Let's accept those two as the shining lights for the medical / sports science Dept. as injury recoveries. Not good is it for the last decade and beyond? I could list out a number of players that dwarf that sample schedule but of recent times look no further than JGS, Poku, Taylor Richards (!!!!!), Chris Willock, Celar, Luke Amos and even of late Rayan Kolli who the club can't seem to get or keep fit if they are to be believed. I really hope I'm wrong but this signing still seems madness to me - both for the club and the player (who should be looking for a club with a strong history of succesful rehab of players). The old chestnut for squads of the size and value of ours seems to be totally ignored by the club - Your best ability is availability |
To be honest the only time recently we've signed a player despite dodgy medicals and it's worked out is probably Charlie. I believe he failed a medical at Hull and that's the only reason we got him? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yep that's all spot on. I have cautious optimism with this. If we can get him playing and he's even 50% of the player he was at Brighton then we'll have one of most talented players to play for the club in some time. We're talking about one of the most highly rated young fullbacks in PL just 4 years ago touting transfers for 40-50m. On paper it's still unbelievable, really hope it works out for us and him.

Bang on - 100% give you that one. He was the last choice of CandleFace who I'm sure knew nothing about him. TBF we did keep Charlie running with his well known dodgy shoulder issues. It's not enough for me to change my mind and feel like we've signed the new David Bardsley though.

| This year's out of the blue signing - Tariq Lamptey on 11:14 - Jul 22 by Nath | Tariq Lamptey's career in stats: Chelsea - 1 match Brighton - 103 matches Fiorentina - 2 matches Total: 106 matches Number of games unavailable due to injury: 112. |
I mean, those are league games. He's played 134 games in total, including European competition. Plus eleven full caps for Ghana, some England U21s. So, it's more like 150 games. He's 18 months older than Kealey Adamson whose career in stats read: played three Championship games (without distinction) and a few dozen A League games, ie L2 level at preseason pace. Who's a better bet to be eased in time into the team at RB ahead of Mbengue? Not sure what the benefit of all this pile on of misery, cynicism and negativity is. Let's see how it goes. The Tariq Lamptey who played two years ago for Brighton is so far ahead of any player we've had on the books at this level in the last decade it's laughable. And I have watched him. I also recall him twice being singled out on MOTD for analysis because of his exceptional ability. If we get the 60% version of that Brighton Lamptey he'll be the best full back we've had since Kyle Walker. And if we don't get him fit, well, we'll play Mbengue instead.

You're right, I have only included league matches. This was because I didn't look all the way through the stats and not an attempt to add further weight to my argument. With regards to a pile of of 'misery, cynicism and negativity', I'm actually quite happy and relived to see it to be honest. Isn't it better that we look at players and look at the pros and the cons rather than seeing often inflated and exaggerated good points? I mean, if the various message boards and Twitter were to be believed Massimo Lunungo was going to be sold for at least £20m, Zan Celar was going to take us back to the Premier League almost single handily, Ilias Chair is definitely going to be sold for £25m one day, Sinclair Armstrong is going to be a phenomenal player, Richard Kone will be sold for £50 million one day. The list goes on much further than that and still the penny hasn't dropped that maybe, just maybe, we have unrealistic opinions of our players which is odd with their actual ability and how others see them. We've been right once in over 10 years about a player, Eze. If, and its a big if, Tariq has overcome his injuries and can find some form we have a great asset on our hands. He won't be here for long if that happens but we'll get a few million for him at the end of this season or next. We all want that to happen. But, as above, I am delighted to see many looking at the negative side and hope this trend continues with all our signings AND current players.

I don't know what you're talking about really because I have never seen any of those valuations or expectations attached to any of those players, not even close. "Lunungo [sic] was going to be sold for at least £20m, Zan Celar was going to take us back to the Premier League almost single handily"...said no one, ever. Certainly not on LFW, which is where this conversation is taking place. And where there is more than enough realism and negativity to go round. Certainly no balance to be redressed here, thanks. I'm 100% certain that over the course of the last near 50 years of going to QPR I have formed pretty realistic expectations, opinions and valuations of our players through hard won experience. I'm just more on the "let's see" side of things. Let's see. Good luck to the lad and good luck to us, I can see why we signed him. He's brilliant. This is a weird thing to say, though, frankly: "I am delighted to see many looking at the negative side and hope this trend continues with all our signings AND current players." Now this is something that I can agree with you on! I never know whether to laugh or cry when I see some of the valuations expected for our players. Personally, I don't think we have one that would attract an offer of £6m currently. I do have hopes though that Madsen, Kone, Burrell & possibly Edwards progress to beyond that figure, but I'm far from sure that they will.

If your entire experience of QPR fans online is on LFW then may I suggest that you don't look at Twitter? More QPR fans post on there than do on here and you will be absolutely aghast at some of the things you read if your benchmark for judging fan's opinions is this site. I do think it is healthy to consider what negatives exist in a player but must add that being negative towards a player during a match isn't good. A lot of frustration you see thrown around towards players is because of unrealistic expectations forming anyway!

Within hours of Taylor Richards signing there was already rumours circulating about him in some circles. All I'm hearing about Lamptey is that he's a good kid from a good family and he's here to knuckle down and try to get his career back on track.

I look at X, yes. I have several accounts muted and am in return muted/blocked by several QPR weirdos, ironically for being too negative I think (or maybe once for not being a nazi). But this is not X. So, if you feel you the need to dampen expectation or give doses of reality out, why not get into it with some of those sock puppets accounts, the Nourry ultras, secret club employees, wannabe club employees, ITK merchants, teenage warriors, and madmen there. I think you'll find yourself arguing with the same person often, just with a different avatar. Most QPR fans are neither on X nor LFW, and neither is a true barometer of opinion I don't think. My experience of QPR is broad enough anyway to believe that too much positivity is not really a problem among its support. In my years as season ticket holder in Ellerslie S Block, R Block now, Upper Loft and the Loft itself, I have never, ever found myself thinking, 'Cor bit too positive here! Dampen down expectations, lads!' I don't think the guy next to me in R has said one positive, encouraging word in 15 years, and his internal monologue is always set to broadcast. I understand if you need to temper expectations to avoid personal disappointment, though, of course. But I don't think it's a support and club-wide problem, historically or now. Some players end up disappointing my own personal expectations (Brock, Sheron, Zelic, Cousins, all our PL signings years under Fernandes) some exceed expectations (Wilkins, Furlong, Derry/Hill), but mostly it's just...he looks ok/he doesn't look what's needed. But let's see. I'm excited about next season. But let's see. Been here before.
