It's a bold move to take a physio department that's already getting pelters from all sides, and decide that what they really need is for the club's two biggest summer signings to come with extremely obvious injury issues.
I think this is a reasonable gamble though, particularly given that Mbengue offers us a solid option while Lamptey gets back to full fitness. Harvey Vale arrived in even worse condition, remember, and we've done such a good job of rehabilitating him that all his hair's grown back as well.
The potential upside to getting things right here is huge: there surely can't be many left-backs in the Championship who'd look at a fully fit Poku and Lamptey lining up opposite them, and feel anything other than a deep sense of dread.
Really feels like this season is going to hinge almost entirely on how many of our players we can keep fit. I hope for all our sakes that Cycling Ben's been eating his weetabix. |

I've got a lot of time for Mbengue at RB, despite 2 or 3 big things he needs to work on.
So as long as the wages are genuinely affordable, and we've got some kind of break clause if he's a right-off, then this is great. |  | | |

I'm more than happy to take pelters here but this fills me with dread already. Good luck to us and him. I seem to be the only one who's not impressed with our business this year. Sign a keeper for 800,000 and immediately loan another keeper from city whom will get to be number 1 and he's not ours. Now sign an injury prone RB who's not fit till September which usually means February. Oh well fingers crossed. | | | |

With his injury back at the end of Sept last year a 9-12 months recovery period sounds about right. I’d be surprised if he plays more than half of the games as they manage his recovery. I imagine our options are covered if he collapses again.
It’s a calculated risk for sure. We’ll have to wait and see if this free signing works out.

This is a big gamble but I remember Lamptey at Brighton and he (before the ACL) was absolute lightning for them as a wingback. I mean he seems to still have two working hamstrings and one knee so in the general scheme of things that's quite positive. We have cover for him until he's ready but if his bad leg does recover then he could be a bit of a masterstroke.
He was knocking on the England door only a few years ago before playing for Ghana and my friends at Brighton loved him. Very much a Paul Parker Mk2 type player if this works out. Let's hope so.

This is the kind of signing that I’m initially really excited about because he’s exceptionally talented. He had one of the best Premier League debuts I can remember for Brighton against Chelsea I think it was and looked unbelievable for a couple of years. But the more I think about it, the more I wonder, why is he here? Brighton don’t usually let players leave for £6 million if they genuinely believe they still have a big future and Fiorentina have cancelled his contract. He’s really struggled with injuries, and now he’s joining a team with a poor record at keeping players fit. I really hope I’m wrong, but right now it feels to me like he’ll be keeping JCS and Poku company in what might be the most naturally gifted treatment room in the Championship. Personally, I’d rather sign someone with a little less talent who’s available to play 30–40 games a season. Like I say though, I really hope I'm wrong and the gamble pays off. |
We don’t really want anyone playing 40 games a season. Ideally the squad is deep enough, with enough quality, to rotate most, if not all players on a regular basis.
Injuries tend to hit hard when players are over played and over worked. We’ve seen it time after time. We need players to get fit and stay fit this season. Effective rotation is key to keeping the momentum going throughout the entire season, as opposed to a good 3 month stretch before they start dropping like flies through injury, only to see the season peter out with a whimper. | | | |

Poku, Lamptey, Obikwu, Burrell, JCS. Larkeche
Availability is the key. The likelihood is three or four of the above could be long term absentees.
Its great having skills, talent and class, but if you not on the pitch, it means nothing. |  |

"Having had a previous ACL tear is a risk factor for future ACL injuries: 'if you've torn your ACL before, you are at a higher risk of tearing it again, or of injuring the other knee.'"

This is a very good signing with no transfer fee so a much smaller gamble.

Well, perhaps read the posts properly rather than assume…
I think this is a good signing. The upside outweighs the downside for me, assuming he isn’t on a ridiculous wedge of salary or along term deal, but I doubt either of those are the case. It is a position we needed more strength. And if we can get him fit and consistently available, he could be a star at this level.
I do think a contract termination by mutual consent one year after signing for €6m is a tad odd, mind. Clubs rarely agree to that having spent €6m a year before. Hopefully nothing to it. |  | | |

So on 1 Sept 2025, Fiorentina paid 6m Euros for Lamptey on a four-year contract.
He suffers an ACL and on 11 May 2026 they agree to terminate his contract.
I suppose he was on an exorbitant salary so they were very keen to get that off their books, but it would seem to indicate they were very confident he wasn't going to be anywhere near the same player / would not play very much, as at his age with three years left on the contract you would think they could still command a decent fee.
So I am hoping they got it wrong and we've played a stormer. Or - I am missing something?
