Neither team deserved to win - though Charlton probably edged it on real chances. We were bilge, no sugar coating it with possession stats. Defence looked better than I remember, but christ on a bike...we were awful in the final third. And the A and E dept at QPR...are on double shifts again. We just aren't allowed nice things. Think I would have learned that by now 🤔 |

Confused how jimmy dunne limped off badly at half time and then came out limping badly for second half, signalling to come off within 60 seconds of the restarts. Why didn’t we send him out early to check, lost a subs window as a result. Just a bizarre thing to do. So much to question about how we behave around injuries. |
Agreed, that was bizarre. Still on train home and I can see us pass, pass, pass when I shut my eyes, seemingly for ever. But I thought we played pretty well against the most negative manager there is.
Thought Kamara was absolutely brilliant along with Ronnie.

Loved the way we played. Madsen and Kamara bossing the middle.
But that stat of 20th in conversions is very worrying. As is the injuries again. |
We pretty much totally dominated Charlton. Excellent performances from our back 5 and Madsen and Kamara in midfield. Spoilt it all by our lack of finish up front. The injuries to Dunne and Lampty are a concern as well 4 players lost to injury in 2 matches! | | | |

I don’t think Madsen is back to his best just yet. He’s getting there but I don’t think he trusts his body at the moment which is why he’s happy to play deep and keep the ball moving in a fairly uneventful way. As someone said earlier in this thread, he’s playing like a training game and not driving forward of looking for quick one twos around the box. Kamara was the one who played further forward in the second half when he’d be better suited at the back and Madsen should’ve okayed further forward.
It was only in the last 5-10 minutes where he was playing around the edge of the box and putting penetrating balls in behind their defence.
Two up top didn’t work and it has to be said playing Lloyd is almost like playing* with 10 men. |

Haven’t been impressed with him so far this season but tonight I was. His game is about setting the tempo keeping the ball moving. I don’t see him as playing the killer ball - although has that in the locker - he often plays that initial pass to open the game up and then others do the finishing touches. Think today when the others found themselves in those areas after receiving the ball, they were lacking in the quality. I only really remember him misplacing one pass and was so much more involved than he has been of late. He was also driving forward a bit more with the ball, carrying it like he doesn’t always do which was good to see.

Agreed but I do think if there was more movement in front of them, Madsen and Kamara would no take the extra pass and play it forwards earlier. Every time they looked up there was nothing so they just recycled possession.

I cannot believe the negativity on here. I made a late decision to go as my mate’s a season ticket holder at Charlton. I got there at around 10 mins in. Sat in the home end (that we were attacking in the first half) and until Lamptey went off Charlton couldn’t get out of their half. We dominated every aspect. Could and should have scored one. The rejig took momentum and Charlton were better for 10 mins but apart from the offside (or not) goal, did little. Second half we dominated more and more and the last 25 mins they were barely out of their half.
I completely agree that we struggled to fashion clear cut chances and didn’t hit the target enough (same as the weekend), but the control of the game and play out from the back was fantastic. We owned the game, bossed them on their own ground and they ended up playing out for the draw.
The difference between that and the game last year where we hung on grimly for a barely deserved point was night and day.
Apart from another two injuries I came away feeling really positive and it was actually a very enjoyable nil nil, if one exists!! | | | |

Last season we came here and dug in with no plan to so much as go past the halfway line. This season we were all over them and they basically accepted a point at home and played to get it. Shame we couldn't finish them off but it's progress of a sort. |

Madsen M o M for me too with Kamara, Edwards, and Charles close behind, as would Dunne and Lampty have been if they could have played longer. Really very good performance from these, big shame we don't seem to have the striker(s) that would make us really strong promotion candidates. | | | |

Same points as us, but totally different mindset. If I'm a Charlton fan, I'm not happy with parking the bus at home.
After the 'boro match, JS talked about the need for intensity. 4th game in a short spell, lots of creative players out, we couldn't do it.
On the injuries, we're not alone. We know that the way football is played now, high press, turns, lots of sprints, is leading to injuries. The FL need to look at this and the fixture list - 5 games in 15 days isn't sustainable. | |

If we had played like we did last night last season, we'd all have been full of praise for the performance.
But for sure, it was frustrating because we should have won. My main criticism is that we were shot shy. Vale seemed to be the only player willing to have a pop but, as is often the case, he wasn't on target.

I think they played the way they did because they were forced to. First 5-10 minutes they pressed high, did the basics well. It wasn’t pretty but Leaburn (I think) somehow missed that early header. Once we got into a groove they realised it was their only option and try and get the ball out to Campbell if they ever got into our half.
Lots to like. A bit to dislike. Very frustrating to not seriously test a dodgy goalkeeper. Smyth doing Smyth things, waving it around etc etc | | | |

I don’t get it either. We barely won a match for two seasons while not always playing great football and people were more positive on here than they are now. We’re level on points with second and I’ve never heard so much negative talk.
Players are being written off left, right and centre. And the manager isn’t being given much credit either. He’s barely had a minute on the training ground with the players because of the ridiculous schedule of the last couple of weeks so how’s he supposed to be whipping players into coherent shapes, some of whom have barely played together as they’ve only just joined.

Feels like there is a bit of straw man building going on.
Who is being negative about the performance?
Reading through the post match comments, the general comments appear to be:
- we played well with some lovely build up play
- disappointed not to win having dominated the game
- frustration with mounting injuries (again)
That seems pretty balanced and reasonable to me. There might be the odd exception (both more negative and more positive) but the consensus seems pretty fair.
Charlton will not be competing in the top half come the end of the season. They’ll probably be bottom 6. We should be disappointed with not beating them. BUT, we should also acknowledge and praise the excellent control and very tidy build up play we had, if being a tad frustrated with the lack of cutting edge. And we lost two players to injury last night, plus found out Saito is injured (but don’t know why Poku was out). Again, understandable to be frustrated as it could impact our chances in future games.
I really don’t see anywhere this over the top negativity to be pushed back against. There’s some deliberate hyperbole employed by the odd poster for comedic effect, but the consensus seems fair.

Have to say, I can’t remember a season where we can pin a side in their own half for such a sustained period and not only that, in an away game!
I think wba might give us a beating, especially as we have so many critical players injured, but as I see it overall, we have a top eight defence, a top four central midfield (when could we last say that?), the only limitation is the final third, not least our rather predictable wide men.
That will be our undoing thus season but this is the closest we’ve been for a long while. |  | | |
