I was generally supportive of Southgate as he got us further than weโd ever been on a few occasions but there was that frustration that he was too conservative at certain times during a game when actually the opposite was needed, the Euro Final v Italy a case in point. Last night showed if you have a little bit of faith, a little bit of courage then just fking go for it. Too often people are too scared to lose and it holds things back. If they have the ability, which Southgateโs squad did, let them off the leash,
Still a long way to go but that was refreshing and most importantly, enjoyable. Isnโt that what football is meant to be about.

It's so hard to win a tournament, he consistently got us in positions where we had a 50/50 chance of winning something. We have a hell of a long way to go before we get to that position again.
For me though It's always on the players to be brave on the pitch, Tuchel wouldn't have told them to play so nervously first half just as Southgate didn't tell his team in 2021 to sit back when they went 1-0 up, it's human nature to become more cautious the bigger the stakes.

Some of the Southgate revisionism a bit silly. Last Euros we were poor, but before that we were fantastic in Qatar and did well in the Euros with the players we had.

Not sure if you saw it, but RTE had Anthony Barry the assistant coach interviewed towards the end of half time and he was really giving out about how poor England had been and listed the things theyโd done wrong. They were shocked at how negative he was, particularly in public.
Kevin Doyle is great value on RTE.
We did see that interview on ITV too and Wright and Neville (God I hate that bloke) were stunned at how direct he was... And huge respect to him for it
I dont think he was negative just very honest... It was a poor first half and we have to see that 2nd half played across 90 mins if we are to win this WC.

I thought that was an enjoyable watch, all pace and power and trying to apply a premier league, aggressive style. Whatโs not to like, other than some poor defending at times.
BUT, will that approach work when the temperature gage is touching 40. Mexico City, humid as anything, itโs just not physically possible to play how we did yesterday where we had perfect playing conditions, (aircon facility), and up against one of the older teams in the competition, with a centre midfielder in his 40s. It was a game where if we were physically up for it, we would definitely outrun and out battle them which eventually is how it turned out. But as we move on to other parts of the US, can we adapt?
The Manager has said he doesnโt want to give up that strength and change our style, but I think weโll have to, and itโs at that point when we canโt play 100 miles an hr, I think we'll miss one or two of the guys left at home. Letโs see, I hope we can maintain it as I enjoyed the game.

Like QPR, I find it hard to be objective about an England performance - especially since it was the early hours over here.
I do think we will both score and concede plenty of goals.
If you play around with one of those route-to-final maps, it's a tough old road for England. Mexico, Morroco, Argentina, Portugal, all highly plausible
Mind you, as much as the prospect of meeting and getting beaten by Portugal fills me with dread, I thought they were pretty awful last night, nearly bored me to sleep in the first half - so could be a good tournament to exact some revenge
we have LIFT OFF that sends a marker out to the world, we are here, competitive and mean business FOLLOW THAT SCOTLAND! 4-2 v a top side, in a world cup match at finals, wow up there with the germany 5-1 away, holland 4-1 euro 96 and euros 20? 2-1 v germany we were brilliant that start to the 2nd half we could have scored 4-5 in 10 mins, we were immense 4-2 flatters them and also a good ref for once.

I thought we were excellent last night and should have scored at least 3 more . Defence a bit shaky at times but that's easily fixable and would rather have that than a team who doesn't create any chances

Lol i presume this is a wind up. Anderson did manage to subdue a 40 year ols eventually I'll give him that. England had a 300+ million midfield and another 80 mil on the left wing yet bar those 13 minutes second half when they were unplayable,they never bossed midfield. As for England hating neighbours don't be childish. I have a tenner on them to win the thing, at 8-1 but based on last I won't be scoping out any 80euro purchases just yet. A glimpse of what they are capable of for sure, but lets see that for 60 /70 minutes not 12/13 It's the poorest Croatia side for a generation, they'll be lucky to get out of the group. With Moderic fading they are v ordinary indeed. A bit like Wales without Bale or us without Roy Keane. Genuine stars can carry a team when at their peak, but there is nobody ready to replace Moderic.

Great game to watch for England fans and neutral spectators.
I was saying that was a performance we would never have seen under Southgate, he would have had England sitting back trying to hold on to a 1 goal lead.
Hopefully that kind of performance will continue and go all the way to the final.

Exactly you see how good Spain, France, Argentina can be add in the Germans, Portugal, Brazil, Morocco and England, we can't all win it though and 7 of those will go home in tears at some stage but they are all still good teams

If there's to be at least one European country contesting the final, then I can't see why it couldn't be England. Spain are alright, France are alright, Germany are alright. None of them anything special from what I've seen so far, all beatable if England play on their day. Can't talk about the South American giants, Argentina and Brazil, as I haven't seen them play yet. But, yes. For all you English out there, yeah, I'd have a cheeky tenner on you. Only a small sample size so far but not sure how anyone could describe France as "alright". Clearly are a "special" team, maybe best team from round one, playing a really good Senegal team but that second half once they sorted their formation was terrifying. Similarities with how an elite manager changed a game at half time in both England and France games.
A starting front four of Dembele, Doue, Mbappe and Olise is properly intimidating. And their understudies are Cherki, Barcola, Thuram, Mateta...not sure about the keeper but rest of the team are elite. Manager has already got to two WC finals, won once...they'll have to go some not get in another semi final at least.
England were great, a really good first step - USA, Argentina looked good too, but it's only one game. The England back four is a slight worry, especially at CB, they looked wobbly against a fairly toothless Croatia - I'd be fearful about them against that France four.
It'd be a good final, though.
