Didn’t Brazil only qualify 5th from the South American conference? That team looks beatable. VJ aside, not world-beaters. And they are the Man. U of international football. Argentina on the other hand are seeming to benefit from Messi not getting round the pitch like he used to - infuriatingly timing his runs into the box to perfection. AND doesn’t England’s pathway potentially involve away to Mexico at the Azteca? Can’t see England winning that one.

Brazil aren't that good. They were gifted two goals by Scotland.

None of the pundits picked it up but our massive issue is that we play inverted wingers and everyone knows what they will do and that they will come inside. It has to change or we are coming home sooner than later. |
Saka is so reluctant to use his right foot, he wastes great positions he creates for himself at the byline. Not helped by his fullbacks not overlapping him so defenders know they can wait for Saka to cut back. Unfortunately he’s now undroppable based on the reputation he made before he was worked out.

I always wonder why Saka isn't played on the left. And Rashford might actually do better on the right. The wide men ain't working. Maybe playing a third midfielder with Rice and Anderson might be more effective.

| England Thread 🏴 on 08:49 - Jun 28 by SydneyRs | Concerning how often we got opened up by a team as limited as Panama. Huge improvement needed. Right now it doesn't seem any different to the Southgate years. Uninspiring football and a reliance on Bellingham and Kane. |
Part of that was how attacking we were, full backs and midfielders high up the pitch so wide open to a counter attack. I don't think we'd play that open against better sides. Problem has been so far the wide players not really playing well and they are key to making this all work. The Southgate years we reach later stages so would be quite happy if it ends up no different. This doesn't look to me a squad or team good enough to win a World Cup but feels like we are in the mix with likes of Brazil, Holland, Germany, Morocco who are not quite as good as the top 3 teams but on their day could beat anyone and go quite far.

Yes Mexico would be a really tough one, can see us losing that and would be a 1am kick off as well. Only ever lost twice at the Azteca in their history
| England Thread 🏴 on 13:19 - Jun 28 with 2607 views | kensalriser | Mexico's invincibility at the Azteca is becoming something of a meme, so I looked at the actual stats. In the 1970 WC they played the USSR (D), El Salvador (W) and Belgium (W). In 1986 they played Belgium (W), Paraguay (D) and Bulgaria (W). They play in CONCACAF where they're always the strongest or close to the strongest team, so they haven't been tested very often - although they did beat Brazil twice on the way to winning the 2003 CONCACAF. It's an eye-catching stat, but one lacking in any real substance. I mean, QPR have only lost at Wembley twice. [Post edited 28 Jun 13:20]

I thought the whole point of Tuchel instead of Southgate was to play more expansive football -we are not seeing that against three weak teams compared to what they have yet to play. Can’t understand why Trent and MaGuire not in this squad. Mind you French defence pretty shocking too (Haaland would have had at least a hat-trick if he had played) so should they meet it could be goal-fest | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Is it too much to ask/expect footballers to learn to play with both feet? My son is naturally right footed and about three years ago we spent the whole summer just on his left. Yes, he was rubbish at first and that was expected but by the time the new season started in September (he was in the U9 league) he was able to play either flank and never needed to cut-in. That extra second or so saved meant he could get crosses in at the first time of asking. If a 9 year old can do it then surely so can they? OK, maybe not every single one as they are human and it might not work for them but surely give it a go? Around the same time he went on a trial at the local All Stars club and all they were looking for in the boys was pace. Didn’t seem interested whether any of the boys could actually play football or not. I found out later that these clubs get a fee if any of the boys on their books go on to a League club academy so it seems to me they’re just out to ensure they look good in order to get signed up. A mate of mine (who used to work for the AA) said driving instructors don’t teach you to drive, they teach you to pass a test. [Post edited 28 Jun 20:27]

It’s been the same for many years regarding the young ones and pace. It’s absolute bollocks. Apparently, all/lots of the other stuff can be taught later. Pace is a bonus, not a prerequisite.

Sorry Mod, but have to disagree regarding Rashford. The two games he came on as sub he looked very lively and creative. In yesterdays game he kept trying to do it all himself, and was constantly running into blind alleys and not releasing the ball in time. Saka too was guilty of that but not to the extent of Rashford. That left hand side has been the poorest for an England team in a while. I do agree though, you can only beat whats in front of you and the DOC will prescribe us more of the same on Wednesday

Konsa’s been a liability, Guehi looks off the pace, fullbacks either injured or out of form. Not being able to name a settled back four through the group stage should be a warning sign, as should the fact we were extremely lucky not to concede against both Ghana and Panama, I expect us to be good enough to get past Congo, but I’d have Mexico as heavy favourites at the Azteca. Thinking anywhere past that feels super optimistic to me.

| England Thread 🏴 on 08:29 - Jun 28 by Hunterhoop | He was decent when he came on last night. I quite like him in this deeper central midfielder role picking the ball up off the centre backs. Lovely pass through to Rogers who was brought down racing through. Last night was better than Ghana. England moved it quicker but our wide players had no end product at all. Gordon, Madueke, Rashford, and Saka, have all now had the opportunity to impress and none of them have taken that chance. You have to hope Saka comes good with more and more minutes as he gets up to speed. Not sure what you do on the left. Rogers struggled yesterday. The invisible man. He’s not in form - Bellingham is - and he doesn’t seem to have or know his role in the team. The big issue is the centre halves. I thought Guehi and Konsa were terrible. They played so far apart. Gaping hole between them. And when one was dragged short, the other was miles away rather than playing narrow and covering in behind in case their colleague got beaten. Definitely want Jon Stones back there. Full back also an issue. Djed Spence sometimes looks class and sometimes looks non-league. Last night was all the latter. Everything he did for the first 10 mins was bad. The defence for the last 20 mins looked like the sort you see finishing 17th in the Prem. [Post edited 28 Jun 8:29]

Agree with that about Eze. For me England are lacking creativity. Eze has the technical skills and vision with his passing to give them that. I don't see the need to play both Rice and Anderson especially when they need a goal like against Ghana

Mexico we'll be at a massive disadvantage due to it being at altitude and they've already played there several times. Difficult to see us getting past that one. Mexico themselves will be out as soon as they have to play away from that advantage.

I think by now most people know full well we'll either suffer a Hodgsonian shock defeat to DRC or whimper out at the Azteca. When that inevitably happens the Tuchel fallout could be pretty rabid. I thought his squad selection was quite brave and bold at the time but all of a sudden it feels like we don't have a player that can pass the ball into the final third yet Cole Palmer is sat at home. Nor do we have a single right back available yet TAA is sat at home. Both of those players will then of course be elevated to world-beating powerhouses by the media and public. Of course we'd have won the WC if those two were in the squad. And then Tuchel has some very difficult questions to answer. Impossible perhaps. It all feels very 2016. Good job we got rid of Southgate. He'd never have won anything.

Picking Livramento and James, given their injury issues both historical and since the turn of the year, wasn't brave in my view, and I'm now wondering: how close Radacanu was to being selected? Stones is also a huge gamble (only started 5 games all season) and the Arsenal lads, especially Rice, look knackered. I still think Palmer was getting there after his injuries and I'd have taken him, and from what I read of his season, MGW was unlucky, and Wharton similarly to be omitted in my view. No matter who you're managing and the players at your disposal, they need to be robust enough to last the rigours of tournament football, and that means being physically capable of playing up to 8 games in five/six weeks, is the primary starting point when selecting your squad. From his original squad, about a third of his outfield players don't look capable of that. I think Tuch made a hard task harder as a result.

I expect that Mexico will get through the next round, but it's a long way from a foregone conclusion that they will. Ecuador are better than decent & are very used to playing at altitude! Either country would be a difficult opponent for England, but neither would be unbeatable. Personally, I think Mexico Ecuador is 55/45 & the game against England to be 50/50
