| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 10:56 - Dec 30 by BushRanger82 | Julien Stephane has to play his best starting eleven every game. We just simply don't have a squad good enough to pretend we're a rough and ready version of Real Madrid. We barely have a squad capable of covering the odd injury and suspensions. We have dropped way too many points to teams that had we performed to our strength, and the best of our ability, we would have undoubtedly come away with something from. Now, we're up against the budgies on new year's day, a bogey side that could squeeze a lucky win off us without having to so much as bat an eyelid. My God, Rangers, I'd have torn my hair out, had I any, years ago. Frustrating, doesn't even begin to cover the experience of being a QPR fan in this day and age. |
You just can't play the same team 4 times in 9 days and expect it to work. We saw when he made hardly any changes a few weeks ago we lost and the moans were he needed to freshen it up. You can't win really. If Poku takes his chance at 1-1 it's a very different result and reaction to it.

| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 11:06 - Dec 30 by Watford_Ranger | Surprised how passive many of the comments are. Yeah we’d have taken this position and yeah you aren’t likely to get scintillating performances with second string players but that was atrocious for the supposed calibre of players out there. Against bloody West Brom whose fans have the knives out for their dismal manager. And there was ample time to change it after the winning goal and he waited and waited and waited while we created nothing and got worse if anything. They rightly sussed out that doubling up on our pretty lousy wingers was all that was required and he did nothing really to give us an option through the middle. Could have brought Smyth on and pushed Poku inside or put Dembele off Kone or Kolli. Own Goal finished the game as by far our best attacking player. |
I get that view, but I think that there is a general understanding that we aren't really that good. This squad is still weak; some improvement in the first XI, but little strength in depth around CM, Full Back and up front with a debilitating goalkeeper situation. My worry is that this is like Schteeve's flog 'em to death season and that those areas where we have been relatively injury free (full back and CM) may start to pick up injuries. Varane I am not worried about as Hayden is simply a better option at the moment, but we do not have another Madsen anywhere in this squad - loads of defensive midfielders, but little creativity in that position. We're midtable and that will do.

Yes, I'm where you are. I actually think the squad is capable of making the play-offs, particularly with a couple of acquisitions in the window. I get that teams can be inconsistent and you need to rotate to a degree but why on earth is Kolli sitting on the bench while Sam Field plays as a number ten? That's just shocking management, and as ever with Stephan, I'm not entirely convinced he makes the final call on who plays - see also Smyth and his contract situation.

This. Was afraid to state the same. Like you, I'm not convinced JS is the final arbiter on who actually plays. The non-involvement of Kolli and Smyth adds credence to that whilst the likes of Varane and Saito continue to be selected in spite of poor performances now being the norm from both. Field should have started in place of Varane and Smyth ahead of Saito. Dembele initially at 10 with Kolli replacing him at a later stage.

Totally - with Saito struggling as badly as he is, and he looked totally bereft last night, why on earth has Smyth only had 19 mins of football this Christmas? I thought Smyth was playing pretty well too. Lot of properly mystifying stuff last night, but that was certainly one that stood out for me.

Mangers will, of course (and nor would I want them to) not say this as it’s giving things away but is always a gamble but with a club like ours that don’t have the resources of the elite, I can understand why it would be done if indeed that is the plan.

Anyone who the club believe can be a big sale will play ahead of anyone else. Varane has already had £5m bids rejected, so he'll be off soon. Saito, full international cap since he joined which has added value. These guys need to play at least 50 to 75 games for us, then they're off. Talking up Smith at AFCON. Playing Esquadinha. All about adding value then selling. Everything that is happening, which would usually take 4/5 seasons is going at warp speed. The club want promotion next season.

When I look at our subs bench this season it looks so much stronger than a couple of seasons ago, when we were forced to have some of the U18 team on the bench. Unfortunately it’s when they enter the field of play that we can all see that they’re not as strong as some of us thought. And what happens if we don’t win these supposedly winnable home games against two of our bogey sides? I can settle for players performing badly, but not for players phoning in performances that we’ve all seen sometimes this season especially.

Smyth’s absence since his excellent display against Birmingham is odd. I really hope it hasn’t been instigated by the club related to his contract situation. We didn’t do that with Dunne last season (he missed one game when it was expected he would join Utd shortly afterwards but then returned to the starting XI).

Not sure making a sub appearance in a friendly is going to add much to his value when he’s churning out ghost performances regularly in the second division.

I want Kelly Brook to sit on my face mate, life's not like that. Varane's not adding any value to anything playing like he is at the moment.

That mirrors my opinion of Vale too. He was rusty, but yesterday's cameo was pathetic and non league standard. I think he lost possession everytime the ball was played to him. He may be better than he has shown so far this season, but definitely not as a right sided winger or midfielder. The game wasn't lost because of Vale or even the other players, but it was down to the changes and as pointed out , the lack of partnerships within the team. The defeat is solely down to Stephan's team selection.

Too true. Play Smyth even if ge doesn't sign a new contract. How much do they think they can sell him for in January? How much did they sell Manning for, or Bright O-S for? If memory serves me right they went for around £250k each. QPR will get more than that from the gate receipts at West Ham in the FA Cup. Smyth has to play. He is fit, rarely gets injured and provides essential defensive support on either flanks. He also could have played Burrell's role last night, albeit not as well, but would have been far more effective than Field as the number 10.

If anything, Varane playing as he currently is, is more likely to see his value drop or even put off would be buyers . Hayden or Field should take over for the next two matches. Preferably Hayden as Field can cover at left back if RND needs to be rested.

Game was made for Smyth last night . To see the 4 subs come on and he wasn’t one of them simply blew my mind . As been said above , odd things occurring at times this season which leave us all scratching our head a bit. I said in a text conversation with my son before the game that this line up reeks of tossing it off and preparing to go full beans for the 2 home games to follow.. Well ok. If we win those games then I think I’ll take what happened last night . Just . But it’s a big ‘if’. You’d bloody better win them then , Julien.

But also mate, if we were tossing it off and focusing on the next two homers, it'll be interesting to see what they look like because a few players - Madsen and Saito in particular - who've done big minutes and were asked to do so again, were total baggage by the end last night. Madsen's basically played every minute this season and it's starting to show.

That is my worry. We'll call it "doing the Schteve" - get some players to play every single minute and wonder why they drop off in the New Year...

Very fair point indeed. Madsen looked ready to collapse after his lung busting rescue mission back to our own goal line saving his own f*ck up. Then limped off shaking his head . A large problem , in my opinion , that JS has is he has 2 players in the team that we simply don’t have cover or replacement for Burrell and Madsen. We could though argue that Smyth could be tried in the Burrell role with support close to him. Or the head coach could try a different system , which I think many of us hoped for looking at the starting IX. No time this time of year to train and put it into practice which is understandable . But if you can’t play this system without Burrell, which we can’t , then you have to re think . But, we have nobody at all to fill in for Madsen. Our other CM’s are dreadful with the ball. Varane is starting to really test my patience. Only one close , for me is Morgan perhaps, who just over a year ago came into the side and started a voodoo which was ‘keeping the ball’. But he is having to cover right back , because Jimmy is now covering centre back , with Field covering all over the shop …..etc. and as for the goalkeeping situation ….. In short , the squad is still lop sided and weak as hell in depth in certain positions which has been said over and over since the transfer window closed. It’s a better squad . That’s for sure. But this 3 game week/ busy festive period is / has become a very big problem JS needs to get to grips with somehow . I guess winning our home games will go some way to do so but tossing off away games seems like cheating a bit . Certainly cheating the fans travelling to them. [Post edited 30 Dec 18:34]

Bit hard to criticise a player who's had no football in 2 months. It's pretty clear Varane is being played so he can be sold. He's played just over 50 games for us now, so he may go in January. |
He’s actually played in about 6 of those 50 appearances. The other 44 he was just a spectator. Fail to see what he contributes that Field doesn’t.

We lost by a single goal in a typical mediocre Champ game away after putting in a lacklustre performance. Like that hasn't happened before. Like that doesn't happen at least ten times a season, every season, apart from the one season in ten when we do better than average. It's just meh. That's what we are most weeks most seasons. |
This was different. The effort was in evidence, it was the lack of quality, passing, control, decision making across the entire team, throughout, particularly, the second half. I was gobsmocked by just how poor the standard of basic footballing standards were. It looked like they were playing under the influence of magic mushrooms. Utterly bizarre.
