| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 22:33 - Dec 29 with 1305 views | bosh67 | Well, we suggested he needed to freshen it up in this 4 games in 10 days thing and I guess he tried to, albeit it turned out to be a clusterf*ck. I wonder if he'd started the same 11 and we lost 2-1 if we would have had everyone screaming that he needed to change it up? I think Stephan needs to see that Varane is out of form and that Hayden is not only a better player but also a very experienced head to have in the midfield. Like he's the most experienced player in the squad. Play him! Also Smyth at the moment is better than Saito. Saito is again off form and Smyth is again one of our more experienced players. Play him! With Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday at home you would hope that both Smyth and Hayden start. They need to if we are going to get past those two teams. Probably need Cook back for the next two. Putting Norwich and Wednesday away would be a big start to our year and we have to play experience to get past those two and not f*ck that up. | |

| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 22:08 - Dec 29 by davman | They were. It was a poor defence on paper and we got what wax expected. Morgan is a good player, but no Full Back; Esquerdinha just not ready. Massive indictment on the squad that he feels that Isaac Hayden is not worth starting in front of Varane (who continues to be very, very poor), but can be used as a right back. Morrison has been poor all season and was tonight; that pass that Vale fckd up on should have gone long. I mean our centre back (the one that can actually head the ball) had gone up top for exactly that reason. Brain Dead. Saito needs a rest. No sugar coating it, he has been very poor all season. Just cos he smiles a lot, our fans love him no matter what. Kone is what he is; a young fella learning at this level. But a special mention to Harvey Vale. That was a nightmare for the ages; an utterly ridiculous performance. Yet more proof on how much we miss Chair despite posts like" Where does he fit into this team". Anywhere guys, anywhere. |
Basically nails it, though I think Morgan is still learning (in any position). Esquerdina I probably should be kinder to - he's 19 and has played, what, a dozen or two pro games? Tonight, though, I'm sorry, but he was dogsh*t. After tonight, I don't want Varane, Hamer, and probably Vale back at the club. But then who would you trust in the present squad? I like Dunne, Smyth, and Burrell, and after that I'm struggling. I also don't believe in this manager. Apart from that, it's a real f*cking vie en rose.

When, exactly, has Varane been 'in' form?

| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 22:37 - Dec 29 with 1235 views | ManinBlack | For years we have never really had a squad you can tinker with. Generally we need our best eleven on the field and most of them to have a good game to win. When we make a few changes to the team we struggle and it is a big reason why we are so poor in the cups by making too many changes. If it doesn't work in a cup tie then don't expect changing the team in the league to be any better. Let's face it, if you want to give Burrell a rest, chances are you have to use Frey as a replacement so immediately weakening the team. The last four away games have been poor and that has been troubling if we alternate with the strongest team fielded at home and changes weakening us for away games. | | | |

Admittedly not much this season, which is why I'd start the infinitely more experienced Hayden at the moment.

| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 22:31 - Dec 29 by Watford_Ranger | Pick whatever tactics and formation you want. Play without bollocks and it won’t matter and that performance completely lacked bollocks. Lost the vast majority of the ‘duels’ and were simply cowardly with the ball, going backwards and mostly losing it anyway when we did have it in half decent positions through luck more than judgement. 2-1 down to a dire team low on confidence and it’s like a competition for how quickly we can play it back to Hamer from their half. |
The constant passing back was infuriating, Varane particularly bad for it even by his standards. But if you can't find a pass you get closed down and have to turn back. And there was almost never a pass on. Saito actually started to look better when RND came on I thought, because they've played together, RND made overlapping runs that took defenders away etc, whereas Esquerdinha was more often moving infield when Saito had possession. I just think individual performances and team set up end up feeding in to one another - if you keep getting caught in possession because no one is available for a pass your passing starts to deteriorate and the whole thing goes to shit. None of which accounts for Vale's almost eerily bad ten minutes on the pitch. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 22:24 - Dec 29 by Wilkinswatercarrier | Couple of things. Not sure Vale was meant to come on, looks like Madsen has a knock. Bit hard to criticise a player who's had no football in 2 months. It's pretty clear Varane is being played so he can be sold. He's played just over 50 games for us now, so he may go in January. |
Selling in January? No way does a club plump up the cattle for a sale in the winter market. End of the sesson maybe, but not January. If anyone does come in with £5m in January, could we even take it with our midfield options? He's been poor and could easily be replaced by Hayden, but we won't get a replacement in and our centre of midfield desperately need another option. He can improve; Sunderland (a) last season showed that. It ison him to do that though...

Why not start Field instead of Varane. Better off the ball and more mobile that him and Hayden, with similar limitations. He’s been “the shield” very successfully for years. Nardi Mbengue Dunne Cook RND Smyth Madsen Field Chair Kone Burrell That would be my 1st team (assuming JCS is not available…)

Dumping all three of Dembele, Saito and Poku would be a massive vote of no-confidence in the management team, not to mention the players concerned. Right now, it's a cunning plan that might just work.

| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 21:59 - Dec 29 by numptydumpty | Even professional footballers need game time to get up to speed and many being thrown into positions that are not natural for them. Kone - upfront on his own - didnt work Morrison - first game for ages - decent but average at best Esquerdinha - young guy with Harrison Ashby vibes not ready at this level Field - Number Ten - Really ?? Poku - Decent for first full game but feeling his way in. Hamer - Awful today for me and with him being selected ahead of our two actual goalkeepers, for me post January, could be all change with all three moved on. Vale - Bit much to throw him on, with ten to go and no recent playing time. Surely it should have been Smyth. Appreciate we need to rotate a little but so many changes in personnel and in their assigned roles, we managed to seriously confuse ourselves. Its the championship though. We werent whipped and had the odd chance and despite all, we are still not world beaters that beat all comers !!! |
apologies- meant to press the thumbs up button but misplaced my finger- in sympathy with our passing tonight no doubt!
| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 23:00 - Dec 29 with 934 views | Geoff78 | Our performance was dreadful, but bad in a different way to some other bad games. We've put in a few dud efforts in the last couple of years, but they've usually been miserable, lifeless, inert performances. Although we passed out from the back, or failed to pass out from the back on far to many occasions tonight I didn't think we were lifeless, just bad. Have we ever given the ball away so often or played a team mate into trouble as frequently? Just rank bad decision making. Of course given all the changes this may have been inevitable, but I've since been thinking Stephan has to try some of these options otherwise he'll never know how they work. Can we play without Burrell chasing everything up front? Clearly not, but we have to rest him sometimes. Can we rely on Esquerdinha at LB? Not yet. Can Morrison cover in defence and if not why is he in the squad? Well I didn't think he was one of the main problems tonight or at least no more than you might expect from someone who hasn't played for months. Can Sam play as a No 10 or off the striker? He'll always try, but no. Etc, etc. I thought Koki could have played the Burrell role, but he hasn't been at his best recently. Poku showed flashes but needs more time to develop. One thing that Stephan seems absolutely wedded to is the 2 man midfield. We have options there (Hayden, Field, Morgan and maybe others) and when we need to stretch our resources over 4 games in 10 days shouldn't we try this? No reason to panic but disappointing when we can do so much better. | | | |

| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 23:21 - Dec 29 with 748 views | mart_Goblin | We can lose games , play poorly , toss away games off , etc . But what my concern is, is that it doesn’t take a great leap of imagination to see these poor performances start leaking into our home form . I know we play differently at home (which puzzles me anyway) but I fear these 2 very winnable home games coming up , become infected with whatever sickness we now consistently go and play away from home with . You can get beaten by better teams as I say , but so many away games this season have been incredibly winnable and we have stunk the place out on a very consistent basis. | | | |
| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 23:23 - Dec 29 with 742 views | kensalriser | Way too much hyperbole and knicker wetting, as usual. We lost by a single goal in a typical mediocre Champ game away after putting in a lacklustre performance. Like that hasn't happened before. Like that doesn't happen at least ten times a season, every season, apart from the one season in ten when we do better than average. It's just meh. That's what we are most weeks most seasons. | |

Nobody at the club should be anywhere near remotely satisfied with tonight's performance. A thoroughly bad day at the office tonight, but we gotta move on.

| Baggie ball bags - Match Thread on 23:42 - Dec 29 with 609 views | stainrods_elbow | I feel the result and performance tonight, but not only tonight, now puts the manager and team under a degree of pressure for the next two home games. We need two convincing performances and six points to get our credibility properly back. I hope for both, but, right now, it's hope as much as expectation. Right now, two ropey draws (or worse) wouldn't surprise me. Hope to Christ I'm wrong. I predicted 4 points from these 3 games on my recent poll, and, having glumly called tonight's result correctly, it's looking like the best we can expect. | |

Problem is Ted that is 2 pathetic away performances in a row and we rescued 1 but tonight it never looked on even with all the attacking subs. Hopefully it will all be fixed and we can get a couple of back to back wins they are badly needed now
