QPR may have finished higher up the league with a better/more mature keeper, but surely he has learned the same as he would have playing for someone else. |
There's no substitute for playing to discover whether someone really has what it takes.
Easing Walsh in at a lower level and weaker opposition would have allowed him to learn the game while hopefully building his confidence.
Throwing him in at the deep end and having his weaknesses exploited by good Championship sides was something he wasn't ready for. He had quite a few games where he did well but when it went wrong the wheels came off completely. The 7-1 drubbing at Coventry being a very brutal example of that.
You can't just throw players in because they look good in training and the data says they are good enough.
We had a string of managers telling us that Niko Hamalainan looked the business in training. Sadly for us and him he never produced that when the pressure was on.
Sometimes computer says yes when the answer should be no.

I'm going to question the 7-1 claim. Xg for the day was 2. I don't recall Walsh being at fault for any of them. But the defence in front of him left him totally exposed.

Fair enough.
I picked Coventry because 7-1 makes it the most extreme example.

I'm not a huge fan of xG but I believe the expected goals against data for last season had us midtable.
That would seem to suggest that defensively we weren't too bad.
Although it is odd that all our goalkeepers performed a lot worse than the expected goals against data last season.

I'm not a huge fan of xG either, Kensal, and we've chatted on here about goalkeeping stats and their vagueness and vagaries.
What worries me about the goalie sabermetrics is that we don't know how they're calculated.
e.g. do they allow that Keeper A faces loads more shots from right in front of him than Keeper B (whose defence is excellent at showing strikers wide)?
e.g. do they allow that Keeper C has two experienced centre-backs who talk him through the game, while Keeper D's two centre-backs are only shaping?
So, I really don't know (Mavis).
Except I think we can safely say from the eye test that our defence last year was poor for this division, as was the cover from central midfield, and that the entire team was rocked continually by injury, so that every defensive set-piece must have been a challenge for a goalkeeper with a handful of senior appearances to his name with a changing cast in front of him.
That's why I wonder if a season at a lower level in a settled team might have helped Walsh (and us) find out what he's capable of, and what he's capable of learning.
Just as with that 18-yr old kid that Australia sent up to take a peno in a World Cup Final elimination moment, sometimes I'm utterly amazed at the decision-making in sports. | |

And this also goes back to the point derbyhoop made about the Coventry game where we conceded seven but couldn't really fault Walsh.

If you never saw the game and just looked at the numbers then you would probably conclude that our defence did ok and the goalkeeper must have been playing blindfolded.
But the eye test tells the opposite story.
The defence was a shambles and let the keeper down.
This is why you can't just let data drive all your decision making.
You need someone who understands the game well enough to tell you when the numbers are misleading and the truth lies somewhere else.
And Coventry wasn't a one-off for erratic data.

This is why it bothers me that Nourry has let people like Paul Furlong go and not replaced them with proper football experience.
There is no substitute for hard earned experience learned at the top level of the game.

I stand about about 20 rows back in the lower loft just to the left of the goalposts and my mate had spent time at Wolves and Coventry as a goalkeeper .
Played in their youth sides . I’d like to think he knows he’s stuff.
He’s not or never was a fan of Joe .
Now I’m not saying that I’m along the same lines but he never really inspired confidence in me or the people stood around me.
He had some very decent games for us but there far too many occasions when he didn’t .
It’s a good move for him and us and I wish him the best .

Probably worth reminding ourselves that we had Nardi on a nice wedge not playing last season and then dragged a 37 year old out of retirement because Nourry decided Walsh was #1 and the data didn’t lie.
12 months later he’s gone, yet Nourry is still trying to sell people that data is the answer to all questions and that anyone who disagreed and felt having played the game professionally gave them an insight had to be removed from the club.

I see Luton are trying to perm sign Kasey Palmer from Hull. He is 29 and he almost single handedly got Luton up last season. Looked a class above. A proper midfield general that would very much add a playmaker element to the team. Just a thought. |

Total agree: IF Walsh has gone out on loan to a half decent League One team then that’s a good thing.
Can’t see many people saying they want him as our main keeper again and it’s not going to do his development any good sitting on the bench every week as our number two.
And we’d struggle to sell him so a good loan is the best option.
