IMHO, He's out of position, Bazz.
He got frozen feet, and forgot to move.
If he had, just a yard, to his right, then he would have had a strong enough wrist to deflect that to safety.
I like him. He's as mad as a box of frogs. But I don't think he's very good.
And that goal should not go in to that part of the net in World Cup game. | |

All the previous greats didn't have to deal with the modern press and the need to be as good on the ball as a sweeper was in the 90s. He's excellent at that. I guess the basics of keeping suffers a bit with this modern dimension of the game.
Looking at the France and Spanish keepers this tournament so far, I wouldn't swap him for either of them.
His 86th cap tonight. I can't remember too many mistakes, but he brought us through more penalty shootouts so perhaps in the long term he's valuable. | | | |

All the previous greats didn't have to deal with the modern press and the need to be as good on the ball as a sweeper was in the 90s. He's excellent at that. I guess the basics of keeping suffers a bit with this modern dimension of the game.
Looking at the France and Spanish keepers this tournament so far, I wouldn't swap him for either of them.
His 86th cap tonight. I can't remember too many mistakes, but he brought us through more penalty shootouts so perhaps in the long term he's valuable. |

This world cup has had a few very decent games and a lot of the top stars have already shown moments of brilliance.
Hopefully the overall standard and end to end games continue to happen.
Best start to a world cup since 1986 for me im terms of quality on show.

I watched with the sound off as I had a two day old grandchild on my lap and I didn't want to disturb the poor mite. Without the benefit of commentary or crowd noise, I thought England were competent, barring a period of dread in the second half which I put down to the nerves of 'we're going to win this unless I f up' type thinking. Croatia were generally nippier, but lacked the strength to trouble a good professional squad, my only real complaint would be at the back, there were far too many ponderous moments for my liking. | |

I thought England were really good. From what I've seen of the other games they seem a lot more open and free flowing than normal. I was disappointed the format changed, but maybe it's a plus point of the lack of jeopardy. The Netherlands Japan game was really clean and the managers hugged at the end. Nice boys, very uncynical. I was surprised Croatia were as open and clean as they were, especially with an ageing team. Presumably this will be rectified in the knockout stages. I think he's been a really good keeper for England.
I thought it was quite funny that as soon as Hayes started talking about his role in the pivot and playing out from the back, he went long!
I like that in him, though. They were getting caught a bit (It worked at other times), he bawled them out, he went long, he's not afraid to take responsibility. | |

Obviously we were a bit shaky defensively and I think that might cost us. Also, Kane always puts his penalties in a low corner so I can see him getting one saved when it matters. But equally we could have put six past the Croatians so it was pretty positive.
