I'm sure others will disagree, but it looked very much like a 4-1-4-1 to me. A slight difference to pre season was that Chair seemed a little further forward
What changed? We started to have some possession & used the ball well, but I couldn't say why they stopped & we started. Perhaps 30 minutes was the most they could play at that tempo.
We had 4 or 5 good/very good moves & I was very pleased to see us stroking the ball about on the ground. After we equalised, I didn't feel that they would score until Murphy arrived on the pitch. For 20 minutes he gave us problems , but didn't have the end product. Thankfully! |

Sounds very encouraging. If we can get men in the box to support Burrell in a 4141, which we clearly did with Chair getting two and Saito 1, then that is exciting. Great to see Chair on the scoresheet.
It did seem a very brave starting line up away from home.
If Kamara is available through the season and turns out to be as good as everyone is saying he was second half today, that is a HUGE upside for us.

Took a while to get that press working but once it did and Rangers started winning that ball it left acres of pitch to run into.
Should I be slightly concerned with the shooting? Scuffed shots from Saito (who didn't look like getting the shot away) and Chair. Although I'm sure its just early season rustiness.

I’m absolutely stuffed.
Just finished eating my words after seeing the starting line up.
Lovely.
We’ll encounter much stiffer opposition than Pompey.
They certainly looked a yard off of it today but their subs did improve them with a bundle of crosses coming in and a few chances.
Our late subs did okay with Smyth and Alfie full of running as you’d expect; gutted Alfie couldn’t wrap his foot around what would’ve been a late tap in. Less impressed with Varanne but the “sub of the day” was Adamson who did great by and large.

Kamara looked like what we’ve been looking for in your older midfield player for years. Just someone who has that extra bit of experience and uses it: can win free kicks when under pressure; doesn’t waste passes; does the simple things well; moves us up the pitch etc. It’s a relief when you’ve had players like Hendricks, Colback, Hayden in that role. Obviously it’s only one match but it’s a promising debut especially as he came in with no pre-season but seemed fit and sharp, which says a lot about him given he hasn’t played for a long time.
We did break quickly which made a difference to our play and helped with getting people in the box. Portsmouth are a bit like us a few years ago, not much pace in their side, so it may be harder against other teams but hopefully Stephan knowing his players better will find different ways to use them in different challenges.
It was also positive to be able to have some creativity without Madsen. We looked a bit bereft without him last season.
Burrell had his best game for some time, making a couple of really important passes that led to the goals. He’s got more to his game than an out and out striker with pace.
One caveat is that Portsmouth took the game to us. There wasn’t one of those eleven men behind the ball situations which we struggle with. But we did learn how to deal with their pressing (or they couldn’t keep it up).
It’s only one match of course and we’ve got a long way to go. Teams will learn how to nullify us and whether we get injuries will be a big factor in how we do this season. But it’s good to start the season positively, it seems so long since we last did and am delighted for those who managed to travel. |  | | |

It's his work rate off the ball that has increased compared to last year. He looks a lot fitter and is now starting to clatter a few tackles in.
He also does a lot of stuff that isn't that fancy, just moving the ball on with 1 or 2 touch, blocking passing lines, etc.
I thought his workrate off the ball, both him and Chair, was excellent yesterday. | |

It’s a nice ball for sure. Dreadful goalkeeping IMO. Thought he was quite wasteful with a few very presentable wayward shots, most obviously the free kick Chair laid off for him in the second half.
Like him though and he can play where he did, on the right or Chair’s position so he’s important. Not sure he will be or should be first choice with everyone available. | | | |

He's an interesting one, Vale. Especially away from home he can be pretty anonymous and even really wasteful, but he can then do one moment of inventiveness that wins the day. I find it hard to think we can put Madsen and him in the same midfield in tough away games but no reason why he can't build some longer consistency into his performances.
Really enjoyed watching us yesterday. Don't mind admitting I thought the midfield team selection had proved JS had learned zero from last season, but couldn't care less as long as we win and show some decent fight like yesterday. Agreed on Kamara, looked really promising. He could be the ticket in that midfield in those games we are going to be under pressure early on. |  | | |

They came at us like a train. Not a second on the ball. They were very positive going forward and we struggled to contain them or even gain possession for more than a couple of passes. They lacked some quality either with the final ball or getting on the end of crosses.
Then we started to move the ball quicker and breaking from defence especially through Mbengue which changed the game.
Someone else will have to say more about the formation. |

One chip into the box that could have gone anywhere or been cleared hardly qualifies him for a 7.6 rating.
I too thought he was fairly anonymous and that deeper role he seemed to be playing does not suit him or us. He definitely has technical ability, but we saw little of it yesterday.
He is better further up the pitch, but when Madsen is fit and Kamara is up to speed, he needs to be benched imo. | | | |
