Palace match thread 13:26 - Jul 23 with 27610 viewsbosh67

I think we may get beaten. I’ll say 2-1 them but would be good if we could hold them.

If we lose…

Beale out
Everyone is rubbish
New signings terrible
Relegation scrap
That Eze lad looks useful

Just some of the things I expect to see if we do lose.

If we win…

Champions League by August or sack everyone

Never knowingly right.

To throw in my perspective on today:

-JCS looked solid. Organised and largely looked forward with the ball.
-Paal looks promising. Noticed he kept tucking in-field when we were going forward (something pointed out a fair bit in the signing preview piece).
-Kakay was energetic, as usual, but he did get drawn out a little bit and had to use his pace to dig himself out of trouble too often. Palace definitely tried to get a lot of their attacks down his side.
-Dykes looked totally uninterested and his lack of anticipation for anything is a continuing concern.
-Dozzell made a couple of nice passes, but was largely anonymous - which seems to be a regular theme.
-Bonne's ability to be offside three/four times in his limited time on the pitch, coupled with his inability to control the ball was borderline incredible.

Overall, I think this 90 mins can calm expectations a bit, and underlines that we're nowhere near ready for the Premier League, by any stretch of the imagination.

This Palace team were very, very comfortable. We contained them well at times, but also game them a fair bit of freedom to coast and only turn it on when they wanted to.

It looks like Beale pretty much knows his starting XI for next week, and this would have been a good, tough, 70-90 minutes for them to understand each other a little more.

I think this four-at-the-back will work, and I like the more mobile Sam Field. Overall a 5.5/10.

If we are starting the season with Bonne and or Dykes up front then without stating the bleeding obvious we will be suffering a goal drought.
They have both been at QPR long enough and neither have impressed me nor will they, unless I'm missing something here I'd safely say neither of them have improved.
For my way of thinking up front Is our weak link now.
I haven't got a clue who's out there who we could bring in and the end of August Is a long way off, I'm not panicking just a wee bit concerned.
Not in the habit of critisizing our players but they're you go, thats how I see It.

I would start with Roberts if fit .

If none of the injured recover and we can't get a striker in before next week, I would start with Dykes and Bonne up front with Chair 'in the hole'. We tried that for a while second half and Chair was getting plenty of space.

Sinclair Armstrong and Albert on the bench to add pace if needed later on.

Field box to box and Johansen sitting deep is not for me.

Think Johansen needs to get closer to the oppo box not further away from it and Field is best as a destroyer and keeping it simple. He doesn’t have the feet or vision for the right spaces of the oppo box.

All looks a bit pre-season from us. Palace looking like they never needed to get out of 2nd gear. Some nice movement from us but no real cutting edge. Difficult to tell how we will do over the first few games. I think Beale has a lot of work to do and needs time to do it.

Field getting in their box and leaving an immobile Johansen as cover is a seriously bad idea IMO.

Johansen is a second half sub for me.

I'm sure getting a striker in is a top priority now because we'll do nothing but struggle if we have to make do with what we have.

Those don't look as bad as I was expecting. Especially if you take away the three clear cut Palace chances towards the end which were just the same chance filmed from three different angles.

One thing I would like to see improved however is our body language. I know it doesn't win or lose matches but it needs to be better and more positive. It can make a difference. Also, on the last two highlights showing I would seriously think about having Albert in the starting line-up next Saturday. He plays with a swagger which will be handy when everyone else is tense and highly programmed. I'd actually put him in ahead of Johansen and drop Sam Field back to the anchor role.

It seems that Beale has most of his starting XI.
We look short of goals, Wealdstone excepted.
Has Armstrong jumped ahead of Kelman? Comments about Dykes and Bonne make me think he isn't going to have to get a lot better to become first choice.

Very important for the boys to get a run out against a Premier League side, a welcome realty check after Wealdstone.

Will be interesting to see how this Johansen/Field partnership will work out.

My main concern is that we’re clearly light up front. That said, we still have Willock to come back.

He was our best player today.

Dozzell played well. 3 goals flattered them IMO. 2nd goal fortunate as deflected off Dickie to loop around Dieng. Otherwise going down his throat.

The difference in the sides was pace upfront. We need a striker with pace.

Think we also miss Willock big time. Decision making in final third wasn't great today.

Roll on next Saturday.

I agree with this. It's definitely not as simple as just blaming the strikers. We looked a bit like we did at the end of last season, too ponderous and slow breaking out of defence, too many touches when we get round the opposition penalty area, no one really taking the ball on and driving through the opposing midfield, and if they did, people not going with them to support.

I know it's just a friendly, but I thought we'd take a few more risks and play with a bit more freedom given that.

Having said that, Palace were good at intercepting through balls, which frustrated us a few times when we nearly broke through. From what I've seen of Richards, he looks like he can offer something different if he's anything like his show reel, and be a bit more positive going forwards. Maybe we'll be a bit more effective against Championship opposition, but I'm not sure Uncs, Dozzell and Johansen in the same team can provide the cutting edge we're lacking at the moment.

I agree with much that's been said already. It was the best game I've seen from Kakay - where did that come from?

Regarding Armstrong, he's definitely ahead of Kelman and I wouldn't be surprised if Beale gives him some game time in the 8 games we'll play before the end of August to see what he can do. If he does well, he'll be kept as part of the squad. If not so good, then a decent loan out. Whatever the case we'll still need a new striker signed.

The Palace game was a useful measure for us, particularly after the Wealdstone game. Lots still to do but I remain positive about the direction we're heading in.

I wonder if part of the reason Armstrong penned the new deal is because he was assured he would be part of the first team squad this season. You'd think he would be backing himself to have an impact, especially given what's in front of him in the queue.

Yes, him, Amos and Roberts are all fit for Blackburn, albeit behind on their fitness.

My take on yesterday’s game was not far off from others here. For me I thought that Kakay was our best player and considering that he was up against Zaha and Eze for much of the game says something. Defensively he was sound and did well getting forward. I like Kakay and would love to see him establish himself. For me the player that slows the team down is Johansen. Personally, like others I would rather see Field in the holding role with hopefully Amos playing the more adventurous role moving forward. Up front I liked the look of Armstrong, had one chance with a well timed run from a Kakay cross and generally looks the part. But talking of well timed runs, surely this is something that Beale has to work on with Dykes and the White Feather. Dykes movement and direction of runs is poor. He never seems to attack the near post, more importantly make those runs across the front of the keeper and a prime example of that was a cross from Chair in the second half when the keeper comfortably caught the ball (all five foot nothing of him), with Dykes behind him. He has the height and the strength but doesn’t put it to use in the right places. And as for he White Feather. He needs to have a serious word with himself given the amount of times he is caught offside especially in areas that shouldn’t matter like just passed the halfway line.

Other than that, the defence looks decent enough, Dickie looks like his old self bringing the ball forward, JCS looks a decent defender and a leader and Paal knows his role. Cannot wait to see Chair link with Willock again and I will also say that Shodipo looks like he can play a role this season, the lad has always had the ability to get a cross in.

And I suppose with regards to the score, that’s what can happen when you play teams that can afford to spend £32million on a forward. It’s a huge gulf between mid table PL and mid table championship teams.

Dykes movement, the game that exemplified for me was the defeat at Preston, we're on top but nothing happening, they go up, their forward gambles on the near post and they're ahead. I thought at the time, why doesn't Dykes do that? How do we get the best out of him?
