| RND 11:03 - Apr 4 with 15443 views | Ned_Kennedys | Another very good performance yesterday, really cannot remember him having too many bad games. Appearance record has been solid all season and makes a nonsense of the “he has major fitness issue” chat. The post game media content shows how much he’s part of the team and loves it here. Can’t believe he’ll be on crazy money: absolute no brainer to sign him if possible. Tried and tested and has proven his worth. | | | | |

Agreed: I know player contract lengths are a secret nowadays but there is no way Dunne or the club would’ve agreed to a one year contract.

| RND on 16:12 - Apr 4 by Lblock | The club said he has to be managed over those weeks and the think you’ll find a correlation with Esquidinha playing random games across them. I’m not saying he’s a reincarnation of Matty Rose; I’m merely repeating what the club has said. Yes, he’s come on over those 3 game weeks but mostly unplanned because his over has had shockers or gone down like leg has been ripped off at Oxford away. If we’ve got Sam Field doing a job as left back cover in Ben you have to accept it’s been a little bit of a problem position for us surely??? |
Well, you can either go with a one time comment made months ago as being fixed in stone forever, or you can go with the facts as they've played out since. Actions speak louder than words as the saying goes. Either way, as you say, we are going to need a new perm LB next season.

| RND on 19:14 - Apr 4 with 2392 views | simmo | I don't know what he'd cost or how his wages compare, but we signed a starting full back this summer for around 350k, and Mbengue is younger with pace, power, a better fitness/availability record and higher ceiling. Can also play CB. I'm not saying RND shouldn't be an option, he's solid if unspectacular and that shouldn't be overlooked for a club like ours. But I've seen people on this forum say £2m would be good business for him, and I struggle to believe there are not better options out there that would be cheaper, with lower wages and higher potential. Not least because we've done it already. Let's also not overlook that RND has looked better recently with Smyth in front of him. It's not a coincidence. [Post edited 5 Apr 0:30]

| RND on 16:07 - Apr 4 by LazyFan | Rumour is he's indeed on crazy money, apparently. That's why Sheff Utd loaned him out to us; we are not even paying 100% of his wages, that's how crazy they are. Very good champ LB, we have managed his fitness carefully so far this season. While we cannot afford his wages, what we could do is loan him for another season, assuming Sheff Utd will let us do that. This may be possible as Wilder is back at SU, and he has the hots for Chair and Dunne. If they offer us big money for Chair, we could make it part of the deal; they would loan us RND for another full season. That's how he could come back. Not that much of a long shot, as Wilder really wants Chair and Dunne. As for Dunne, rumour was that Dunne was almost offered a 2-year deal by SU, but they sacked Wilder, and he stayed here for another year. We could lose Dunne on a free in the summer to SU if they offer him a 2-year bumper deal. High chance of that with Wilder still around. |
Dunne signed a 12 month deal in the summer and made him captain??? Even we’re not that stupid.

We need players who are available every game |
No we don’t. 70% availability is fine. No one should be expected to play every game. Rotation is a must, and there are plenty in the squad that have been far worse than him when it comes to availability. A solid left back…if the salary is reasonable.
| RND on 20:20 - Apr 4 with 2243 views | StreathamRanger | I'm a big fan of RND. Huge upgrade on Paal. If he can be signed without breaking the bank, I'd be delighted. He's clearly bought into the club and is very much the right sort. I'd be worried going into next season with Larkerche and Esquardina as our left back options. | | | |

This. RND has had a good season, but he was signed as a stop gap, and he has stopped the gap. We need to learn the lesson - a solid LB improves this team immensely, and sign someone who fits that mould but is cheaper with a higher ceiling and a longer road to run to achieve it. Id actually be a bit disappointed if we used up so much budget on RND as important as he's been

So you want to sign a LB as good as RND but cheaper and younger? Thats great in an ideal world but we also need to learn our lesson that the team needs a certain number of experienced pros like Dunne, RND and Cook to play alongside the youngsters. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Agreed. RND is just about to turn 27. That's a year younger then Dunne and JCS. He's hardly an old man. Plenty of life left in him. I doubt we would have picked up Mbengue for £350k if he hadn't been out of contract so I'm not sure it's fair to say we could pick up someone better than RND for a similar price. He only has one more year on his contract at Sheffield United so there may be a deal to be done

Agree. He is what he is. A good pro, hardworking and a solid 6/10 every week, but we shouldn't sign him. His wages alone would be a problem. I can't believe there isn't a younger LB in L1 or 2 with more potential that we could sign.

He’s had a good season with us and there’s a lot to like about his play and decisions in game. As a signing he’s a conundrum. We clearly have Esquardina who still isn’t ready for a season, and Larkeche (?). Neither will match RND’s performances for next season if things remain the same. Another year on loan wouldn’t be a bad thing, while our own two (plus another prospect?) gain more experience. If we are going to move forward next season I think we would do well to have RND there in our settling back line. Either way, that position needs attention and some decision making if we want to better this season.

As we don’t know what wages he is on nor what wages he would agree to sign for us then it’s a push to say his wages would be a problem….. Who was the last LB we had who you think was consistently better than RND? He’s better than Paal and Bidwell in recent memoriy. Probably Clive Wilson over 30 years ago. If he’s available we should sign him rather than sign another new player who may or may not work out.

| RND on 12:15 - Apr 4 by mart_Goblin | Agree with a lot of the OP. Not sure about the usual swipe at others who may have the nerve to disagree about his overall fitness . But he was really good yesterday that’s for sure . Like the match thread from yesterday , not sure how you can say he DOESNT have an overall fitness issue. It’s what the Sheffield United fans where critisizing him for and if you look back at the several 3 game weeks with had he’s completed zero. So calling it nonsense is just denying facts . However , we don’t know if it’s an injury that will fully recover during the summer or it’s something that’s being managed throughout the rest of his career. I think that if he could play 3 game weeks or busy periods like Christmas like say Jimmy has done this season then I think we could do worse . When he is like he is yesterday it’s hard not to see him being good defensive addition. Linked to that , Mbengue’s first 25 minutes yesterday ticked every box in the “good defender but we need a real right back in the summer” check list . The worst crosser of a ball I can remember. Lots to like about him defensively too though . [Post edited 4 Apr 12:19]

I will say it again, you go on about our full backs but that is not a major issue with the team..... RND is good enough and I see none of this 'rubbish', because that is what it is, about his fitness. He has been a regular since he arrived at the Club and plays pretty well. If he(1) will sign for a low signing on fee, (2)Sheffield Unted are willing to release him (Why wouldn't they, they don't want him) and (3)he is willing to drop his basic wages, etc then the Club should be looking to 'get him on board'. He is good enough and comes across as a 'good lad'. Menbgue, whilst he has limitations technically and his crosses can be pretty wild, those first couple early in the match on Saturday were absolutely proper shocking, so shocking I laughed a lot!!! But he has got a lot of the abilities to play at RB, it is just technically he fails a bit!!! And finally about Mnbgue, if I was playing against him I would know that I was in for a 'good kicking' one way or another, he is 'rock hard' player and if you get within 'distance' then you had better beware. We have adequate full back replacements to act as back up for those two players. Spend money on a striker, midfielder and, dare I say, a GK. [Post edited 5 Apr 10:16]

| RND on 15:57 - Apr 4 by bosh67 | I think he is a very steady Eddie at this level and I like him a lot. He reminds me of a left back version of David Bardsley. He's not the quickest but he's got a good brain and very good feet. He's 27 later this month so if we can get him on a perm he would be good for a few years. I guess it may come down to perm wages and whether or not Larkeche can come back strongly from injury because I presume he would be the player we need to develop. But yeah, RND would be an excellent perm signing if Utd want to sell him and we can afford him. He is clearly enjoying it here so that would point to a poss perm. |
Spot on, though I think he is better than a steady Eddie. Great defensively and watching the highlights a threat going forward. Not a flash Harry but not sure we want one of those. Team is better when he plays, he is a great age, good enough to represent his country, played in the Premier League and not a crock ( despite that reputation). If no chance of signing he shouldn’t play again this season. Esq needs the experience

I think that RND has been good for us this season, but he doesn't fit in with the criteria of players that the club has been signing on a permanent basis. Is it a push to say that wages could be a problem? No, we don't know what he is contracted to earn at Sheffield United, but I doubt it's far fetched to suggest that as a Premier League player it would be more than we can afford. As to consistently better players at left back for Rangers since Clive Wilson, without thinking hard about it, I will give you Clint Hill & Ryan Manning. Damien Delaney was possibly on a par with RND.

He has played almost 50 championship games though, plus he's already played in this squad all season, so wouldn't need a settling in period. Unless we can find a cheaper left back with lots of championship experience, I'd be going for RND.

For every Tylon Smith and Tim Akindelele with ‘potential’we still have a Steve Cook and Jimmy Dunne and when (occasionally) fit a JCS to back up Ronnie Royce and Liam Morrison is not deemed ready yet. So we can say there is depth across the centre. We are clearly light in ‘proven’ championship standard full backs on both sides and Esquidenha is not experienced enough clearly and I fear there is a little over egging the return of Larkeche and his quality by some. What I hope we do at the end of the season is send RND back to Sheffield but not before sitting him down with Nourry and Julian, asking him if he would like to stay and getting his agent to talk turkey over sensible wages which we can afford on a potential contract of 3-4 years for amortisation purposes to spread the cost. Send him back and ask him to sit tight maybe until well into the window but not look desperate. If we go in early Utd will either want to see what the fuss is about and reassess his performances with us and then crank the money up or they might integrate him back into the squad. Maybe what happened with Edwards so ideally we would want him pre-season so he hits the ground running. But tell him to hang tight whilst we try and play the negotiation game with his employer. So in other words a long winded Yes from me to resign him. [Post edited 5 Apr 12:12]

2 things Gazza . You conveniently ignored this bit “ When he is like he is yesterday it’s hard not to see him being good defensive addition.” Like others you don’t really want to acknowledge that 2 or more things can be true at the same time . Secondly , “I will say it again, you go on about our full backs but that is not a major issue with the team….” I go ‘on’ about the full backs ? I’ve barely mentioned them either way over the season. I’ve been pretty supportive of RND. Annoyance that he couldn’t play 3 games in a week (it seems I have made that up) actually comes from him being pretty bloody good, and Field and Esquirdinha being not quite good enough replacements. Weirdly, how did Field get to be covering at Left back IF RND was ‘always’ available. As for Mbengue, I said about 5 months ago that he was a “ good championship defender but a league 2 ‘footballer’ . Got a fair bit of stick for that and I agreed that it was a bit harsh , which it is . Not really mentioned him since and certainly not negatives . He’s a valuable member of this squad . Upset a few early on and certainly is over bearing to some of the quieter members of the squad, which had been a small issue , but defensively he has impressed me . Unfortunately spells like the first 25 mins on Saturday don’t do him any favours going forward into the opponents half. JS will have noted that . No doubt about that . As mentioned previously though, he is still young enough himself to be coached and helped . For me it’s a balanced view where I can see both sides . Some on here don’t seem to like that . Fair enough

How many goals and assists in those nearly 50 games? For a proven championship full back playing at his peak, in a QPR team that's scored well all season? It's zero isn't it? I know goals aren't his responsibility, and maybe someone can dig deeper to let me know the forward / key passes stats and how they compare to other full backs in the league, but it is an issue if you're part of one of the worst defences in the league but also don't contribute at the other end. Mbengue might have his downsides, but I've seen him single handedly take some of the best wingers in this league out the game completely this season, and make marauding runs forward and recovery tackles alike. His end product is poor, but seemingly still better than RND, not forgetting he played a portion of this season at CB... If you look solid with a defensive winger in front of you, occasionally a liability without, and usually end up somewhere in the middle, you're the definition of a steady Eddie basic full back. There's nothing wrong with that btw, and set against our own very poor standard of left backs currently, and in the last 20 odd years, that might even look good. But again I struggle to believe there isn't a better option available elsewhere, in this league or below, that wouldn't offer more for less. As a bit of an aside, full backs are the easiest position to fill, imo. You can take a relatively basic defensive player and ask him to do a job there, and he will likely do exactly that. It's why you can put Sam Field - who I rate highly but we can all accept is very limited - out of position at LB and he will look just as solid and reliable as someone like RND. It's why spending a chunk of money and mooted high wages for a player like that is not justified, imo. I personally think RND is a defensive player best suited as the left sided option in a back 3, but we don't play that way.

Bottom line is that RND is able to do a pretty fair job as our first choice LB and should be a good full time addition to the Club, finances allowing it. And BTW, I do not think it is harsh re your comments about Mbengue......he is technically not as good as a players who play regularly in the National League.
