| January transfer rumours on 14:36 - Feb 2 by BostonR | I’ve always admired Sam Field’s professionalism. He’s a very good all-rounder and suited to the Championship. Rarely injured, great workrate and can play a number of positions. He will definitely help Norwich given their current position. Who’d of thought Madsen would become the pivotal player in our team and essentially consign Field to the subs bench? I wish him well and a great signing for Norwich. |
Madsen hasn't consigned Field to the subs bench, the continual picking of Varane in front of Field has consigned him to the bench and I always thought the reason for that was to sell Varane, but then you can't sell players that nobody wants.....
| January transfer rumours on 14:54 - Feb 2 with 2609 views | dmm | The only way I can make sense of Field leaving is that Varane is due back imminently. | | | |
| January transfer rumours on 14:57 - Feb 2 with 2549 views | bosh67 | I feel Sam has been very underrated and hard done by here. I always feel a lot safer with players like him, Cook and Hayden on the pitch. He's also able to play 3 left side roles so it must be that Sam feels he wants more than he's getting. Feels mad given our injuries and Varane not fit or playing that well. | |

Isn't it well publicised we've rejected bids from Espanyol and St Etienne?

Mmm well publicised a lot of click bait but nothing material and the click bait said they were prepared to offer a loan for Varane with the potential of a permanent if they get promoted, he's not better than Field and Field is more versatile.

I think the theory, rightly or wrongly, is that Varane has a high ‘ceiling’ even if that often seems unlikely to be fulfilled. At 24 and still relatively new to English football he should logically be a much better (valuable) player in a year or two than he is now while Field’s value on the pitch and in the transfer market is at its peak or heading the other way. Tis the game model and the game model must be adhered to.
| January transfer rumours on 15:07 - Feb 2 with 2341 views | HAYESBOY | Certainly wouldn't loan him out. Pay up with at least 2-3m. He has 3.5 yrs left on his contract. IMO I wouldn't let him go as he can cover left back and left sided centre half. | |

| January transfer rumours on 14:52 - Feb 2 by QPRSam | I know there will be anger but any thought that Field may be the one pushing for a move? He's 27 and needs regular football which he isn't getting, Norwich will be a good move for him and especially for their situation in a relegation battle. He's firmly behind Hayden and Varane in his position now, we had Isak on the bench the other day and rejected offer for Morgan so perhaps they feel that's enough - maybe naive but time will tell. I'd hope it's clearing some wage for an incoming at least |

| January transfer rumours on 15:15 - Feb 2 with 2187 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | He's got to go. He'll be 28 in May and still have 3.5 years on his contract and he's not playing. Not sure I see the issue with this as it'll mean Morgan playing more and Alemayehu moving up from the DS. It's too easy to keep bringing Field on for 10 minutes rather than trusting Morgan or others. | |

WLS would have confirmed both so not sure about that. I think it was posted in another thread about club targeting certain positions and profiles that are in demand from the top clubs, I'm sure DMs with great physical profile was one that is mentioned. Teams will take a gamble on the likes of a Varane for his potential, if the rumoured 5m fee was correct that's more than a 5x on the original fee. I don't think Field has shown anything this season to show he's better than Varane right now but that's irrelevant. I get he's not liked on here but a lot of the talk feels disparaging and like we're talking about a Sunday league player sometimes. Seems like a popular player in the squad and still young, not a wrongen so I don't get it

It's the message board we all have our opinions, it's difficult to judge Field this season, he's not been picked they have prioritised Varane and left Sam on the bench, it seems we're trying to develop Varane in the hope he makes us big money, it's the business model which will work if you pick the right players. I get Watfords reasoning, there's no point in holding onto Field if the club/Nourry doesn't see a future for him and at age 28 his value may well be at his peak or as he puts it heading the other way, as you can tell I think Varane flatters to deceive but there's still development in him and he could make us good money yet, it's a real shame that FFP forces us into these decisions.

| January transfer rumours on 13:36 - Feb 2 by Padulas_Shampoo | Is anyone else worried about the volume of fit players we have to select from? Saito clearly not fully fit. Dembele off injured again at the weekend. Only Chair being talked about as nearing a return. We only have about 13 fit first team players and one of them is about to leave. Feels like it's asking for trouble. |
Mbengue available Friday and hopefully new striker, both will boost the bench. 9 starters pick themselves so 2 wide men from Smyth, Saito, Bennie and Kolli. Reckon Bennie will get the nod down the right, Smyth will surely start. Can’t think of a recent season where we seem to have the cover for an injury situation like ours. Personally would rather Sam played and stayed for all the obvious reasons, LB cover almost as important as midfield Field. We obviously trust our Brazilian
| January transfer rumours on 15:36 - Feb 2 with 1829 views | OakR | I'll be sad if Field goes, sightly surprised also as he can cover so many areas of the pitch. I guess if someone is not playing and you get a good offer, then that is what we should be doing with our financial heads on - but is it a good offer? I guess salary off the books. It does feel like it might come back to bite us with all our injuries though. I'd be much happier if he stayed. | |

If that were true then Field would have been in the starting line up since Varane got injured, and he hasn't been.

It is all opinions I agree, just find some things go into a bit of hyperbole, the difference in player won't be as wide as is suggested sometimes. It's like I had to deal with a fan in upper loft just shouting "weak" and how unfit the team was any time we lost a challenge in the 2nd half vs Coventry. It's been the case recently but I thought we were great in the 2nd after going 1-0 down. My biggest worry would be the versatility, Field can cover LB and CB also and is a great player to bring up late to shore things up. In essence the perfect squad player which is why I think it's coming from Field himself who may want more minutes. Perhaps you're right by saying it's his peak value but if he's going out on loan as is rumoured, I'm not sure how much we'll be getting for that

| January transfer rumours on 14:08 - Feb 2 by Jevlar | Be very disappointed to see Sam leave. Been a great servant for the club. And seems a top lad. If we can get some money for him and it helps balance the books, Madsen, Varane, Morgan, Edwards probably keeps us covered there… |
I'm more concerned about losing Field's ability to cover for RND at LB, and for Cook and Dunne at CB

| January transfer rumours on 15:50 - Feb 2 with 1559 views | TheChef | I'm sure Field would be pushing for a move too because he wants to play football. But like I say it makes little sense when we gave him such a chunky renewal deal in April! | |

im sure there will be a story later on that we tried desperatly for somebody but just failed to get it over the line before the window shut , deal was done but due to the players hamster not fancying a move to london they wouldnt come. im guessing hadyn didnt do his hamstring sat then as he was holding it when he went down. brave move from the wonderchild in weakening us when we are just outside the top 6 with tough games coming .

Surely the point was it's not Madsen keeping Field out of the starting eleven, they are totally different types of players, we have three Senior DCMs in Varane, Field and Hayden and the manager has chosen Hayden to replace Varane. The decision to let Field go will be monetary as Watford rightly says he's probably at his peak and the business model needs us to let players leave and I think we're all guessing that Sam is getting fed up being a continual bench warmer.

Hayden came off due to fatigue and is fine, per Julien's post match As for the rest, I don't know, you've got a very interesting imagination as always Wombat

If it is monetary then surely better to sell him than loan him out. Still feels like a bad idea for one of our most versatile players?
