If they both sign and can head off with the squad to Austria, that’s great news. That solves what I was concerned about. It makes the tour and pre-season so much more effective. Good the club also saw that and want to maximise the pre-season so we can start strong, and not wait until after the season to do our business. Encouraging. Indicates the club have high hopes for this season.
Seems a little odd to sign Ward for £800k as a back up (Pierre Charles surely isn’t coming on loan to sit on the bench!). But if we got £500k for Cooper, then it’s not a huge net outlay. Presumably he’s signed on the promise he’ll be the number 1 next season…and that is good planning if that is the case. |
Charles missed most of last season getting both shoulders pinned, he’s not a 46 game a season keeper so it’s perfectly sensible to sign Ward as an experienced #2 as he will get plenty of game time anyway! | | | |

If Lloyd preferred to him on purely footballing grounds I’m baffled and disappointed.
Edit: now read the WLS article: says decision made after Stephan made “an assessment” of his squad. Maybe am reading too much into it but is this an oblique way of saying Kolli turned up out of condition? V disappointing IF so as was hoping this would be his breakthrough season. I didn't see any bed wetting hysteria. You could argue the hysteria is the other way round, fans confident we've signed two top quality goalkeepers having never seem them play - and considering our record with signing keepers I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed they are right.
All I saw was surely fair criticism that we've made an absolute long-term horlicks of the goalkeeper situation, meaning that in July we've had to sign two goalkeepers. I know many disagree, but for me endless signings does not smack of great, or successful, planning. Surely the masterplan would have been to develop Walsh, sell him at a decent £2m+ whack and then have tracked some £1m+ keeper and bring them in. I thought that was what we were supposed to be doing in this wonderful Brentford-lite plan?
Just going out and signing two keepers, one of which is in effect a PL loan, to me is more like the planning of Tony Fernandes.
Obviously, hope I am wrong, hope they are the next Stejskal and propel us to glory and then I will realise the planning was genius. |  | | |

He had a season as our number one. It was so-so. Now he's having a full season on loan with an ambitious promotion-chasing L1 club as their number one.
The order might not be linear. But there's no reason why at that end of it he isn't sold for a decent fee (or even replaces Charles at QPR). This seems to be exactly like development.
Would you rather have stuck with Walsh this season? Cooper has been developed and is leaving for a fee which is similar to that we have paid for Ward. We have to trust the scouting on that for now, surely.
As for the new keepers, we have seen Charles. We stuck three past him at LR last season. But Man City didn't offer £5-10m for Joe Walsh.
Keepers change fairly regularly. We have often had in the past two nominal number ones competing. The goalkeeping at QPR has been poor and a drag on the team since Dieng. Change was 100% necessary. I'm encouraged that QPR are addressing some of the glaring issues in last season's squad.

That's fair Wombat and think I acknowledged that in my post. Am not pointing fingers as we don't know all the facts. Simply saying he is a player I really like with a lot of potential and if for whatever reason - the player's lack of fitness or the club's lack of faith or a mixture of the two - that potential is not being realised. And that is a massive waste.
I would just add that if the plan is to sell him for big bucks then leaving him out of the tour party can't do a lot for his transfer valuation. But also get the club has to maintain disciplinary/ fitness standards etc. Sounds like a mess - and a real shame. | | | |

Last season we had RND on loan, this season potentially just Charles. Obvs better to have entirely your own players if you can but still a massive improvement on all the journeymen loans that flattered where we were as a club under Warbs.
If City paid 10m for him it’s an indication that Charles prob has some ability.
The other keeper’s record for Motherwell last season speaks for itself.
Sure we haven’t seen either play for us yet but on paper looks like the big upgrade in the goalkeeping dept that most fans have been calling for. Our goals conceded last season relative to our xg was shockingly poor. That not just down to the keeper but that along with injuries was probably the key reason why our results weren’t very substantially better.
Not everything great - notably the Kolli debacle - but overall the window so far has looked to address the weaknesses in the team far more than last season’s somewhat scatter gun approach | | | |

Got rid of the 4 keepers we had last season and brought in 2 who *should* be better (plus a rated youngster in Salomon as the 3rd choice).
Done, sorted, thank you very much lets all move on.

For me, the issue is not Walsh being 1st choice last season and season.long loan in L1 this, its that it could/should have been done in 2022.
He was keeping the bench warm, playing 2 or 3 Cup games and a meaningless game at the end of the season. | |

I think the idea is for them to compete for who starts - which seems like a healthy situation. It may even be what goalkeeping coaches generally advise.
As long as we haven't guaranteed City X amount of game time for Charles I'm fine with it. | | | |
