Deal done so say WLS, 4.5 million quid. Big money, big big money (for us)

Poll: Moses Odubajo - Stick or Twist?

This (and I suspect its true if WLS are touting it strongly) is very very very surprising.

I always just dismissed this possibility (suggested by many on here tbf) as over-optimistic fantasising, especially given our much-lauded Careful Data-driven Model.

So he'll either fail the medical, break his leg at the London Stadium or be sht in the finest Stefan Johansen tradition. Sorry, it's January....

If/when confirmed, welcome home Ronnie - hope you've got good studs...

Someone compare him to Steven Caulker for me

I don't think we can guarantee either, but this surely is a safe a bet as we can get? Right?
Am I mad?

I don't want to raise the acronyms PSC and FFP but this excellent news about Ronnie (if/when confirmed) means that we are now comfortably clear of all this financial malarkey going forward?
Right? Yes? No nasty news in 2/3 years time?

It's not buy cheap sell high, it's about selling for more - and the prospect of that is much higher when the player is a) sub 23, b) an England U21 international and c) even if it's just once, has played in the Prem

Nothing is guaranteed in football, but the underlying case for this investment is rock solid

Nail on head.

Turning 18 year old free agents into wonderkins isn’t a sustainable model. Buying a lot of high potential u23/4s is a more sustainable model.

And based on the evidence of our eyes (not Southampton’s) he has very high potential indeed

I hope he's the player we remember watching and not the player Southampton's coaches are seeing.

I think £4.5 million is too much for us, for a CB, when we have holes at both full backs, and up top. I can't believe that we couldn't scout another CB for a third of that (perhaps the Edwards equivalent of 18 months ago, as is the mandate), and invested the rest elsewhere...

Of course I hope it proves a bargain price in the long-run. He was a lovely player. But it sits badly with me.

He's bound to be rubbish now isn't he!

I note the last line of the report there where Nourry says: Obviously to finance this transfer we are asking fans over the age of 60 to liquidate their pensions!

Although, he's 22 so hopefully he has time to get his match minutes up and rediscover the form he had with us last time. I feel reasonably confident and slightly terrified at £4.5m.

The good thing is that we know he can read the game well at CB and I take from this that perhaps JCS's days are numbered in terms of being relied on to play more than a handful of matches. Edwards could also become a Declan Rice type player for us as well. For me he was (and I hope will be) the closest player we've had to Glenn Roeder.

The last time we said this... Maybe as part of the medical we need to drop him off outside the Grosvenor Casino for an hour or two, see what state he's in when you pick him up. Check his bank balance and blood alcohol, then make the call.

I'm pleased but I also wonder where that leaves the likes of Smith, Akindileni and others in the DS.

Cook will leave in the summer so that's a slot. And JCS; well who knows?

Maybe I've answered my own question.

Edwards can and will play every week, whereas those guys - at best - would only play occasionally as part of their development. Two different scenarios.

Despite him not playing much this season, a brief look at Soton fans online comments show the overwhelming majority are not happy at all that they’ve sold Edwards. Always a good sign.

Blimey that is a lot especially for a club losing £1.25M per month.

You have to give it to our owners with thier consistent backing of our beloved club and a big shout out to Eze too. We still love you Ebb’s

I guess they have also taken into consideration Steve Cook’s salary saving post June too for ongoing wages.

I still have a niggle why he wasn’t making the Saint’s squad though…..

High praise indeed and I'm inclined to agree.

Here's hoping that he can deliver more of the same from a year ago. I don't expect it to happen immediately, it didn't last season, but he will find that high level of consistent performance again.

We spent close to 3million on Saito so this looks a very good investment.

LOL! We committed closer to double that on Saito….

I said a week or so ago that id come round to the idea of pulling out all the stops to sign HR, because of what he offers in terms of progressing the ball out of defence etc in the absence of JCS. The gaps in the squad look a bit different this week with all the injuries...

Still, like everyone has said, it's hard to imagine this not being a sound investment, especially as a known quantity, and he'll arrive with a lot of good will and feel-good factor. Plus, despite gaps appearing elsewhere in the squad CB is a position where we remain vulnerable.

Welcome back Handsome Ronnie
